What to do
Paddle the lake: Lake Hope State Park Campground offers kayak and canoe rentals for exploring their 120-acre lake. "We took a couple of the hikes down by the lake and it was great," notes Kevin F., who enjoyed the wooded shoreline trails.
See the hummingbirds: Visit the Lake Hope State Park Campground nature center for their popular hummingbird feeding program. "The naturalists feed hummingbirds at the nature center. They pull the feeders for awhile leading up to a 'Feed the Hummingbirds' program. So cool! The birds come right to you!" writes Chris C.
Explore historic sites: The region contains remnants of southern Ohio's iron-producing past. "Hope furnace is just outside the campground and next to the first 'put-in' for the lake. As history buffs will know that Ohio was one of the nation's leading iron producers back in the day," explains Dave V.
Hike to Moonville Tunnel: This haunted tunnel from the 1800s provides a unique destination near Lake Hope. "The haunted Moonville Tunnel is nearby and worth the short drive and hike. Unfortunately, it is becoming defaced by disrespectful taggers...still cool nonetheless," reports Dave V.
What campers like
Privacy options: Some Top O' The Caves Campground cabins offer more seclusion than others. "This campground offers awesome views for the sunsets/sunrises, trails on the property that leads to beautiful scenery in the heart of hocking hills," comments Cat, who appreciated the natural setting.
Access to caves: Cabin locations provide good bases for exploring regional cave systems. "The best part is you can walk to ash cave from your campsite! There is a connecting trail right at the front of the campground. It was a fairly simple hike too," shares Kelli W. from Top O' The Caves.
Late season availability: Lazy Dog Camp Resort (formerly Yogi Bear) remains open through cooler months. "Had a good time here with family. Place was straight out of a movie with a mini golf, arcade and small pool. Camp store had a little bit of everything," notes William R., describing the amenities beyond just cabin accommodations.
Water activities: Many cabin locations include beach areas for summer recreation. "Nice little beach area along the lake. Several large pavilions. Playground for the kids. During the summer they set up large inflatable slides and create a makeshift lake waterpark!" describes Lucille W. about Lake Snowden.
What you should know
Cabin sizes vary significantly: Prepare for potentially limited space in some units. "Our cabin smelled so bad that we could hardly stay inside. It smelled like a mix between musty, mold, and bad cleaner," warns Alex about a specific cabin experience at Top O' The Caves.
