What to do
Horseback riding trails: Access 16+ miles of dedicated trails at Mohican State Park Campground with varying terrain challenges. "This is our favorite park of 2019. The hiking trails are great with a covered bridge, overlook and waterfalls. The sites are nice and large with trees throughout the park," shares Andrea F.
Water recreation: Enjoy fishing, kayaking, and tubing at Pleasant Hill Lake Park Campground which offers boat rentals and lake access. "The lake is an all sport lake so there is fishing, tubing, jet skis and kayaking. The marina has boat rentals available," notes Michelle H.
Disc golf and geocaching: Try these family-friendly activities at West Branch State Park, located 40 minutes from Seville. "We set off to explore the park. It had some really nice hiking trails. We also played some disc golf and went geocaching," according to Andrea F.
What campers like
Spacious campsites: Mohican Wilderness offers large sites with room to spread out. "Even though it's a large park the sites are huge so you still feel like you can kick back and relax. Quiet neighbors and friendly staff plus everything is mowed and well maintained," reports Andrea F.
Clean facilities: West Branch State Park Campground maintains excellent bathhouses and amenities. "Best bathrooms around! Showers great. Bathrooms great. Lots of 'lakefront' spots. Dog park is pretty great, too!" says Kim B. The park also features "private, spacious, shady sites" according to Alisa G.
Diverse accommodation options: From tent camping to full hookups and cabins, the area offers multiple lodging choices. "There are 10 free camp sites for backpackers in Mohican, each is about a mile hike in, no vehicles can reach these sites," notes John H. about the primitive options at Mohican State Park.
What you should know
Reservation timing: Popular parks fill quickly during peak season. "Make reservations! (6 months in advance). Waterside sites fill up quickly!" advises Alisa G. about West Branch State Park.
Site selection considerations: Many campgrounds have uneven terrain that requires planning. "Severe Sloping Site Won't Keep Us From Having Fun... our site was labeled slight slope. That was a joke. We were only off 2 inches side to side but front to back we had to lower the front 15 inches," warns Andrea F. about West Branch.
Cellular service limitations: Malabar Farm State Park Campground and other parks in the region have limited connectivity. "No cell service with Verizon at this park," notes Andrea F. about Mohican State Park, making it important to download maps in advance.
Tips for camping with families
Educational farm tours: Visit Malabar Farm for a unique learning experience. "Louis Bromfield was a conservationist and among many other things (including winning a Pulitzer) he was in the forefront of organic and self-sustaining gardening. This place is amazing! (and would be an excellent home schoolers camping trip!)" recommends Shelly S.
Kid-friendly amenities: Look for parks with dedicated children's areas. At West Branch State Park, there's a "Nice playground with toy stocked sandpit, volleyball net," notes Lee D., making it ideal for younger campers.
Budget-friendly options: Canton-East Sparta KOA offers affordable alternatives to state parks. "Camped here several times growing up. Staff were great and helpful... it's a fun campsite. Clean as always," reports Bradley B.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Check for seasonal water shutoffs if camping in cooler months. "Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year. This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hookup sites are turned off," explains Andrea F. about Mohican State Park.
Extension cord requirements: Some fairground camping requires additional equipment. "Ashland fairgrounds has $20 tent sites or $35 full hookups. You may need an extension cord. All back in sites," advises Charles K.
Level site selection: Use online maps to identify more level areas for RV camping. "The sites are large landscape sites that are full hookup with large concrete pads. Each with its own picnic table and fire pit," says Andrea F. about Pleasant Hill Lake Park, highlighting the importance of checking site specifications before arrival.
