    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Great for families and group camping

If you're traveling with kids or enjoy the community of being near your fellow campers this is a great option. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat this may be a bit loud and busy. However, the many amenities are a great way to find peace with the 9 lakes, 12 trails and a beach for swimming. The lakes and connecting channels are stunning for canoes and kayaks and there is a convenient rental area. This is a campground of convenience with a very well stocked campground store with reasonable prices right next to the entrance. There is firewood and ice for sale as well as staple cooking items and cute souvenirs. The campsites are spacious and have a picnic table and fire pit at each. This campground is a great way to stay close to the fun and other campers. With so many options there is a something for everyone! Safe travels happy campers 😄

    Twin Mills Camping Resort

    Beautiful Wooded Campground

Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. We frequent this location when getting RV Repairs and visiting Elkhart, the birth place of most RVs.

There are cabins and tent sites and a large lake access point with a beach area. The playgrounds seemed to be in good shape and the dumpsters were centrally located.

The park has a gate entrance for security.

There is a large pool area and basketball court.

There are several sections in the park, some more wooded and narrow sites, some are more spread out.

Cellular: T-Mobile had good signal strength and bandwidth, AT&T was not as good but still doable.

Most of the sites are full hook up, some have 30amp and some have 50amp.

Amenities: Pool Clubhouse Basketball Volleyball Picnic tables Fire rings Trash Playground Lake access Beach area Dock Cabins Tent sites

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Nice park for Northwest Ohio

We rented a yurt as a local weekend escape. Our kids loved the yurt. It was nice with a little mini fridge and 4 double beds. Campground showers and bathrooms are clean. It is one of the only state parks in northwest Ohio, a beautiful little spot nestled in farmland of Ohio. The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well. We did not use it, but there is a dog beach as well. Sites are crowed and close together.

    Lake Hudson Recreation Area

Beautiful Nature, Dark Sky Rustic Camping

Lake Hudson is a dark sky preserve full of trees, nature and a beautiful lake. The camping sites come with an electric plug in, a nice fire ring and a picnic table. They are cute sites. Most are not by the lake. There is a dumpster. The facilities are rustic. The facilities are port a potty type with wooden walls and cement floor. No showers. A hand pump well for water. The swimming part of the lake requires a drive. The Lake is beautiful with a sand beach, no wake boating and grills. However it is rustic so there is goose poo. The woods are beautiful. There is hunting. We had heard that some people partied there but the night we were there it was quiet and people were respectful. We had a beautiful fire and dutch oven dinner. We saw one cute racoon who ran away when I reacted. We were worried about mosquitos but we only saw one.

    W. J. Hayes State Park Campground

Great state park in the Irish Hills

Hayes State Park is a great little spot in the Irish Hills. It rained the whole time we were there (boo!) but we tried to make the best of it. Our site was the perfect spot for two tents and a hammock, and I loved the fire pit and table being next to the driveway. There’s electric at every site, and a paved driveway for RVs. One thing is that the sites in the east loop, while a little more spaced out than the west loop, are still real close together. If there had been someone in the spot to our left, it would’ve felt really cramped. The ranger office was nice, clean, and had lots of information ready! Firewood and ice are available there as well for reasonable prices. The bathroom building was right in the center of our loop, and had warm showers that were great after a day of cold mist. They aren’t the cleanest, but with how many people were there it was well kept and stocked. This is obviously a campground geared towards families, with tons to do from the beach, to volleyball courts and horseshoes. The main attraction is of course Wamplers Lake, and you can rent kayaks, pedal boats and canoes to go explore around the lake. Overall, this is a great campsite if you are a family, or attending an event at MIS right down the road. If you enjoy more secluded campsites, this isn’t the spot for you.

Most cabin rentals operate seasonally from April through October with limited wintertime availability at select locations.

What to do

Water activities on Hogback Lake: Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday offers direct lake access with boat rentals and an inflatable obstacle course. "We arrived late to find an envelope with our name on it with all of our info inside... There are lakes all around and a playground for the kids," notes a visitor.

Night sky viewing: Lake Hudson Recreation Area serves as a designated dark sky preserve ideal for stargazing from cabin sites. According to one camper: "The best part of this campground is the stars at night! This is a dark sky preserve campground and the stars are the show. We stayed here at the end of the perseid meteor showers and saw several falling meteors."

Hiking nearby trails: Cabin guests at Pokagon State Park Campground can access an extensive trail system. "There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc. Tons of picnic areas and pavilions; would be a great spot for a family reunion."

What campers like

Private cabin settings: Lake Hudson Recreation Area offers cabin sites with natural separation. A visitor shares: "Each site is separated from the next by young forest, so it lends to a very private and secluded atmosphere. It's also incredibly close to the lake, and I saw 3 spots with private lake front where they had moored their fishing boats for easy access."

Historical venues: Some cabins near Pioneer provide access to venues with cultural significance. At Buck Lake Ranch, a camper notes: "So many legends have been on the stage at Buck Lake Ranch including Dolly Parton! This campground is great for music lovers as they have live shows on some weekends and a huge festival in September."

Clean facilities: Gateway Park Campground maintains well-kept cabin areas and recreational spaces. A review states: "The sites are all paved with plenty of space and with grass and shade. The owners are friendly and helpful. Plenty of things to do to keep yourselves and children busy."

What you should know

Seasonal availability: Most cabins operate on limited schedules. At Camp Sack In, a visitor explains: "They offer free coffee on Saturday mornings and all of the camping amenities you need to have an enjoyable stay. Very family friendly for the weekend, or you can secure a site for the whole season."

Reservation requirements: Cabin bookings fill quickly during summer months. "A little bit of road noise, but water, electric, sewer, cable TV all worked great. We have family in the area and had a great visit. We will definitely stay here again in the spring," reports an Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday guest.

Varying amenities: Cabin features differ significantly between locations. A Kimpels Hickory Acres camper notes: "There is a Waterpark, pool, and hot tub at this campground you can access for an additional price. I camped in a tent next to the cabin that my sister rented so I'm not sure about the tent sites that are available."

Tips for camping with families

Recreation options: Harrison Lake State Park Campground offers multiple activities for children. "A lake to cool off in that's not too far from the south loop sites. Modern toilets and showers. Open space camping on grass with strip of woods between sites and lake," reports one visitor.

Kid-focused amenities: Several cabin locations provide dedicated child-friendly facilities. Gateway Park features "Pool 3ft-5ft, Air pillow, Large playground (very clean), Half basketball court, Sand Volleyball net, Rec room (small amount of games), Crafts on weekends."

Safety considerations: Some cabin areas have proximity to roadways. As one Harrison Lake visitor observed: "Throughout both campgrounds, there are sites on the outer edge that are next to a main road with nothing but a small, wooden split-rail fence dividing the state park from the outside world."

Tips from RVers

Utility connections: Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday provides premium hookups at cabin sites. A visitor notes: "All the services you would want are here and they have a workable mesh wifi system. Another plus is that a Verizon and ATT cell tower is <2 miles away. KOA has recently modernized this park and added a lot of new sites."

Water access considerations: Cabin renters should verify water sources at each location. A Lake Hudson camper explains: "There is only 1 hand pump that I saw for all the campers to get water from. This mid-evil hand pump should have been scraped years ago and is in need of some major repair work."

Seasonal closure awareness: Cabin availability changes with weather conditions. A visitor to Pokagon State Park Campground shared: "We stopped here for a night on our cross-country trip, wish we had 2 nights because we had lots of thunderstorms. We camped in our teardrop on the primitive tent loop. Sites were nice and secluded where we were."
