Hike woodland trails: Shawnee State Park features numerous marked paths with educational elements. "The tent sites are hidden in the trees at the top of some steps and up a short path. If you don't mind hauling your gear a short distance from your car, sites like this are perfect," reports Jay T.

Limited cell service: At Sandy Springs Campground, many campers appreciate the digital disconnection. "The campground offers something for everyone: playground equipment, basketball hoop and various balls, access to the river for fishing, and absolutely stunning views of the Ohio as well as the surrounding hills," writes BluePitMom O.
Secluded woodland sites: Shawnee State Park Campground offers more private options than many state parks. "Unlike many Ohio State parks I've visited, the Shawnee campground has a variety of great tent sites. Several of these are hidden in the trees at the top of some steps and up a short path," explains Jay T.
Clean facilities: Cowan Lake maintains good standards throughout the season. "The lot was VERY large and well maintained. The asphalt pad was decently level; a picnic table and fire ring were included. The restrooms were decent. They weren't new; however, they were very clean," reports Kim H.
What you should know
Site drainage issues: At Pike Lake State Park Campground, heavy rain can create problems. "It rained quite a bit and many of the sites got flooded. The ground here doesn't drain well," warns Bob M. Pack extra tarps and waterproof gear when visiting during rainy seasons.
Hookup distance varies: Some campgrounds require extended cords and hoses. "Some sites may have trees for hammocks. Can get loud with lots of RVs in spots nearby," mentions Clay A. about Stonelick State Park. At Carter Caves, "some of the sites were around 50 ft from the electric hook up," reports autumn L.
Seasonal activities: Campgrounds offer different programs throughout the year. "We were there on their Halloween weekend, with a fun site-decorating contest and trick or treat in the afternoon, which was mildly annoying for us because they closed the roads from 2 to 6," writes Megan M. about Cowan Lake State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Choose sites near recreational areas at Long's Retreat Family Resort for easy supervision. "The kids can either swim up at the lake (with multiple water slides and a huge floating dock with diving board), the little kids can have fun in the splash pad right at the beach, go carts, rock wall climbing, basketball, arcade and so much more," shares Kristi J.
Educational opportunities: Many cabins near Peebles provide access to nature learning. "I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants. This is helpful if you have little ones with you or if you are like me and just like to learn about the animals/plants on the trail," notes Kenpocentaur K.
Bike-friendly roads: Several campgrounds feature paved loops for children's cycling. "It is small enough to let my kids roam a bit on thier bikes and feel comfortable not having eyes on them 24/7," reports Jason L. about Stonelick State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site levelness varies: At Cowan Lake State Park Campground, pad quality can impact setup. "Electric site only, full service all full. A bit rough getting RV setup, but pad is fairly level, so easily setup to use slides. Site 60, 46 feet max length, ours 39," shares Johnothan R.
Signal strength differences: Cell service varies significantly between providers. "Internet here on t-moble 5G home is 90Mbps down and 6 to 20Mbps up. Verizon on cellphone, only 10Mbs down, 1-3Mbps up. ATT cellphones are similar to Verizon," reports Johnothan R. at Cowan Lake State Park.
Size restrictions: Some camping cabins near Peebles can accommodate larger rigs while others cannot. At Rocky Fork State Park, "Upper and lower campgrounds. Not much privacy and you will hopefully make nice with your neighbors," notes Shelly S. "There are more good sites than bad. 4,5,9,10, 147-165 those were my favorites," adds Jarrod M.
