What to do
Hiking trails for all levels: Buck Creek State Park Campground offers multiple trail options through wooded areas. "Beautiful walking trails. There's also a great mountain biking trail in the vicinity. There's a small beach within the campground, a bigger public beach a short drive away," notes Catherine from her Alum Creek State Park Campground visit.
Fishing opportunities: Most parks in the region offer stocked fishing areas with various species. "Great fishing and a playground, and it is a good place for a cookout. They have bathrooms and a water fountain," shares Sarah W. about her experience at Alum Creek.
Water activities: Boating, swimming, and paddling are available at most parks from late spring through early fall. "We kayaked and had a great time paddling around the lake. Be aware that there is no horsepower limits for boats on the lake and weekends are very popular for anglers in high-powered bass boats," explains Nancy W. from her time at Delaware State Park Campground.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Many campers appreciate the spacing and natural barriers. "This is probably our favourite state park we have been to thus far. The best thing about this campground is the fact that all the sites have privacy," mentions Maddy B. about Delaware State Park.
Clean facilities: Bathrooms and shower facilities receive positive feedback at most area campgrounds. "Really well run park. Great facilities," Greg W. notes about his experience tent camping at Alum Creek State Park.
Family activities: Beyond standard amenities, many parks offer organized events. "They had a pancake breakfast on Saturday mornings through summer and doughnuts on Sunday. Helpful camphost," shares Jill B. from her stay at Mohican State Park Campground, adding that there's "a campground beach and boat launch. Lost of hiking paths in the campground and in the park area. A great dog park with lake entrance for the pups."
What you should know
Site selection matters: Some areas offer significantly more privacy than others. "The sites are nice with some sites able to boat up to them. Be careful with rainy weather, some sites have flooded in poor weather," warns Katelyn P. about Alum Creek.
Reservation requirements: Most parks require advance booking, especially during summer. "Must reserve online as they are still doing everything virtual," advises Mike & Deb L. about their Buck Creek State Park Campground visit in October.
Seasonal considerations: While some campgrounds remain open year-round, amenities vary by season. "We stayed on a Sunday night so it wasn't packed. There are a ton of sites. Some had great shade and others didn't have any at all," Shannon G. shares about Indian Lake State Park.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Select sites near play areas for convenience. "This is a great campground with plenty to do for everyone. The camping spaces are separated by trees and brush. An added bonus is the addition of several full hook up sites," notes Sandy O. during her Alum Creek visit.
Beach options: Most parks feature both main beaches and smaller campground-specific swimming areas. "We did not swim due to it being in the 60s and rainy during most of our stay but we did go look at the beach it was very clean and appears well cared for," mentions Ashley R. during her Cardinal Center Campground visit.
Weekend activities: Many parks offer organized family events during peak season. "They had a pizza party at night and gave our family an entire box," shares L W. about their experience at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park.
Tips from RVers
Hookup availability: Full-service sites are limited at state parks but available at private campgrounds. "Sites are nice and level. Nice heated pool and many activities in the area. Hiking, canoeing, biking, etc.," notes Wesley S. about Mohican State Park.
Site dimensions: Most parks accommodate larger rigs, but specific loops may be better suited. "We have never had a 'bad' campsite at the Alum Creek State Park Campground. Each camping space is separated by trees and brush. And there is plenty of room!" explains Sandy O.
Seasonal facilities: Water and dump stations may close during colder months. "Camping in the off season is our favorite time of year. This particular park has potable water on by the dump station and the dump station is open. The water at the full hook up sites are turned off," Andrea F. reports about Mohican State Park.
