What to do
Fossil hunting: Obtain permits to search for 350-million-year-old marine fossils at Caesar Creek State Park Campground. "Great visitor centers too," notes Kenpocentaur K. who adds, "Great place to hike to a cool bridge and waterfall. We also went to a nearby pioneer village. We even got a permit to collect fossils."
Mountain biking: Access 1.2-mile dedicated trail directly from campsites at Jim Terrell Park. "What you may not realize is right next to the campground is a mountain biking trail that is 1.2 miles long," explains Kenpocentaur K., who cautions, "I don't bike this trail as that would not be wise with my coordination skills. However, I have hiked it several times. Just be careful as it does change at times due to flooding by the Little Miami."
Golf: Play a full course while camping at Kincaid Lake State Park Campground. "Plenty of primitive camping! Few on the lake. Showers swimming pool. General store inside the park," notes mckinley P., who emphasizes the "Golfing in Falmouth Kentucky!" Marie E. confirms, "Campground was well kept. Bathhouses clean with washer and dryers available. Fishing, boating and swimming available."
What campers like
Level sites with lake views: Find waterfront camping at A.J. Jolly Park & Campground. Anna N. appreciates that sites are "close to Cincinnati but each site is wooded and on lake front, lots to do!" The campground has updated amenities as Bobby C. explains: "The Bathhouse is super nice and clean. The sites I'm at are on a hillside so think theatrical style site. None are level looking so you will need to know what your doing. I'm o level your rig. The lake is in view to each site."
Large private campsites: Many sites at Cowan Lake State Park Campground offer substantial room for group activities. Kim H. reports, "The lot was VERY large and well maintained. The asphalt pad was decently level; a picnic table and fire ring were included." Pamela M. agrees, "We love camping in the shady tree-lined areas where we have big sites for family gatherings. We've been camping here for over 10 years and love it!"

At Cozy-Dale Campground, Candace H. shares, "The bathrooms are extremely clean the whole campsite is extremely clean the food and the grill is absolutely delicious." What you should know
Seasonal availability: Some parks have limited operating seasons. Stonelick State Park Campground operates from April 1 to October 31, while Cozy-Dale Campground has the same seasonal schedule. In contrast, Winton Woods Campground remains open year-round as Jeremy K. confirms: "Great campground and park. Plenty to do. Hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, splash park, etc. Campground was super clean and quiet. Bathhouses were very clean. Entrance was gated. Nice campstore."
Campsite selection considerations: Privacy and shade levels vary widely between loops and specific sites. At Caesar Creek, Nick C. cautions, "These sites have plenty of space between them. But there isn't a lot of shade. Partial shade is very generous for the B Loop." At Jim Terrell Park, visitors should know that "You will hear traffic noise at this campsite as it is close to the main road and main bridge in town."
Reservation systems: Some parks require advance planning while others accommodate walk-ups. Winton Woods has a challenging reservation process as Denise notes, "Both the mobile site and the full website didn't work. There's a number listed to call 'if you're having trouble booking online', but of course the office was closed all weekend and didn't open until Monday."
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Choose camping loops with dedicated play areas for children. At A.J. Jolly Park, jeffrey D. mentions, "The main play ground is extremely nice. About 1/3 Mile walk. They do have a small playground in the rv section." Similarly, at Caesar Creek State Park Campground, Nicole C. shares, "The sites are spacious with plenty of room for cornhole games. Showers were nice and hot and bathrooms were clean. Had a good time at the beach and caught a few fish at a couple different fishing spots."
Wildlife education: Take advantage of nature programs at multiple parks. Cowan Lake State Park Campground offers educational opportunities as Kenpocentaur K. notes: "I loved the informational boxes and tags that they had on the trees or plants. This is helpful if you have little ones with you or if you are like me and just like to learn about the animals/plants on the trail."
Pet-friendly trails: Most Batavia area campgrounds welcome dogs with specific hiking options. At Caesar Creek State Park, trails accommodate leashed pets, although wildlife encounters require vigilance. Kincaid Lake State Park also accommodates pet owners while camping. Jess H. from Stonelick State Park describes: "Despite the rain and the wind we had a great time! Our spot was right next to a small Pollinator trail that lead to the water. My little ones had a blast riding their scooters around the round about."
Tips from RVers
Site leveling challenges: Bring leveling blocks for campgrounds with sloping pads. At A.J. Jolly Park, jeffrey D. advises, "So most if the sites are large enough for 30 and larger RVs but we're designed by someone who was clueless. On the general setup of newer campers and motorhomes. Pad are about 12 x12 concrete so that's a plus but the location of the pads if you want to use your RV awning means your wheels in what ever your using are goi g to be nearly off the level area or in the grass."
Hookup availability: Research specific utility connections before arrival. At Caesar Creek, electric hookups are available but water connections vary by site. At Tucker's Landing, Marie B. explains: "This camp ground was clean, new and level. Great river views. Sites close together with lots of permanents. There is a ramp there for paddle boards and kayaking but its very muddy we didnt end up using it."
RV size considerations: Some older campgrounds have site limitations. For urban camping near Cincinnati, Winton Woods offers good options as Gary J. confirms: "There were also plenty of pull through sites for the big rigs. However if you're good at backing, there were a good many deeper sites that you could use."
