Best Cabin Camping near Ashtabula, OH

Several campgrounds near Ashtabula, Ohio provide furnished cabin rentals with varying amenities and comfort levels. Sun Retreats Geneva on the Lake offers "nicely done cabins" according to one visitor, with proximity to Lake Erie beaches and a well-stocked camp store. Thompson/Grand River Valley KOA Holiday features cabin accommodations alongside teepees, with private bathrooms, showers, and access to fishing and swimming lakes. Virginia's Beach Lakefront Cabins provides water-view accommodations where "almost all spots have a water view even if you're not super close," as one camper noted. Most cabins include electricity, and many feature air conditioning for summer comfort. Thousand Trails Kenisee Lake in Jefferson offers cabin rentals in a "park-like setting with 2 lakes" and amenities like swimming pools and mini-golf.

Rustic and deluxe cabin options are available throughout the region, with most requiring advance reservations, especially during peak summer months from May through October. Pet-friendly cabins can be found at several locations, though policies vary by campground. The Park Model Cabin at Roundup Lake RV Resort provides "a half trailer with a full bathroom and full kitchen," though one guest mentioned bringing "an air mattress in for the second night" due to an uncomfortable bed. KOA cabins typically offer more standardized amenities with reliable quality. Uncle Johns Elk Creek Campground features heated cabins that are available during fall and winter months, making them suitable for off-season visits when many other facilities close.

Most cabin rentals provide basic furniture and beds but require guests to bring their own linens, pillows, and towels. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between properties, from basic microwaves to full kitchens with refrigerators and stoves. Fire rings are common at most cabin sites for outdoor cooking. On-site camp stores at Sun Retreats Geneva on the Lake and other locations stock essential supplies, firewood, and some grocery items. Pymatuning State Park's cabins in nearby Pennsylvania offer more rustic accommodations with picnic tables and fire rings, but fewer indoor amenities. Grocery stores are located within a short drive of most cabin locations, making it convenient to stock up on arrival.

    Goddard Park Vacationland Campground

    Unhappy camper - again

I told my wife that this was the rotten place that we stayed at before. She insisted that was somewhere else but there we were, all the people complaining about the nasty manager lady as we are swimming by AND the creepy, chubby manager dude with the grey goatee, ogling the little girls a little too long. Why are those people still there?? All she does is sit outside the office and smoke cigarettes and he creeps around. Everyone hates them and will smile to their faces but they're horrible!

Pros: paved roads, mostly clean bathrooms and two swimming pools. Cons: Teeny, tiny sites. Bingo hall bathrooms are gross. Awful, rotten egg smelling water. The beds in the cabin rentals are rock hard. Horrible WiFi. Good luck if you’re there and the electric cuts out. Very few activities (which you will also hear about"there used to be so many activities" "Lisa never has any activities any more") Good grief, the people are unhappy but I guess, too cheap to move on to a better place? The entire staff complains about them constantly, especially Rhonda in the office. I just came in to buy ice, lady, I don't need to hear about much you hate your boss!

I would suggest you keep looking rather than tolerate this toxic place and all the unhappy seasonal people and employees. Save your money and vacation time for a nice place with decent management.

    Roundup Lake RV Resort

Great Lively Place with lots of Amenities

Starting off, everyone from the employees to the other campers were super friendly! My boyfriend and I rented The Park Model Cabin which was sort of a half trailer with a full bathroom and full kitchen. The bed was the only detractor of our trip, as it was mostly springs. We brought our air mattress in for the second night and slept much better. The themed weekends throughout the season are fun and festive and there are a lot of activities to do and participate!

Sun Retreats Geneva on the Lake

It's Easy to Love this Campground

As newbies to all things RV, we needed a place in Ohio to break in our new travel trailer. Indian Creek is family and pet friendly with all the amenities and even a great lookout spot across the street where you can take in a Lake Erie sunset. We loved the clean bathrooms and appreciated the staff's effort to maintain services while encouraging social distancing. All of their COVID-19 policies were well spelled out online and in signage across the resort so that you knew what to expect. All of the staff wore masks and bathrooms were cleaned often. Some of their usual events and programs were unavailable but they offered craft kits for children to pick up and do at their own campsite in lieu of the usual program. We enjoyed their beautiful put-put course and ice cream stand. They did not allow outside visitors in the resort. The only thing that threw us off was that the bathhouses were closed at night and we didn't know that until we tried to use them. The resort is expanding and adding new sites. They are planting lots of trees (it looked like one at each site) so the resort should become more park-like and less parking lot as they grow. We really liked the back-in sites with water and electric hookups because they were larger and more private and wooded. The fire ring was so easy to cook on that now I'm spoiled! The camp store/gas station was convenient and well stocked with camping supplies. Golf carts are available to rent if you need them to navigate this huge park. We rode our bikes instead. There is a township park just down the road towards Geneva-on-the-Lake proper that we used to spend some leisure and exercise time near the lake. We look forward to visiting this RV resort again in the future!

Jamestown Campground — Pymatuning State Park

great spot for direct kayak/canoe put in.

We stayed in site 218. this spot is in the smaller ( less crowded) part of Jamestown campground in Pymatuning SP. it is right on the water and has an easy access area for shore fishing and entering a kayak or canoe or some other water device. the site sits on a little bay and the otherside (more crowded) of the campground is across the water. the water is a little murky/ grassy but still good entry area. the campsite was spacious for a pa state park. the site is between the lake and the road. sites 212-222 look to be on the water with boat access, but 218 has the easiest entry. 220’s picnic Bench and fire pit sit next to the water with great views, but there is little shade. 218 had a great shady spot were you can hang 3 hammocks. there is no electricity at these sites and pretty much tent only. lots of tent space. the fire ring was decent but we moved it as it was right underneath a burnt tree. 218 was ADA accessible with a nice picnic table. restrooms were fairly close. clean... outdated, but clean.

Jamestown Campground — Pymatuning State Park

    Another trip to Jamestown Campground

My family has visited Pymatuning park many times now and try have used a variety of spots at Jamestown campground. It is large, offering multiple options for campsite types. It’s a standard PA state park campground offering bathrooms (bathrooms are older, but are being renovated July-August 2021) showers, fire ring, picnic table, etc. Campsites J-106 thru J-116 are well shaded, but are alongside route 322 which maintains consistent traffic at all hours. If the noise is not an issue, this run of tent sites are well spaced, and offer easy access to the facilities. To be away from the road (and nearer to the lake) sites J-120 thru J-128 are closer together but can be quieter (depending on your neighbors…)

The beach area is clean, and raked often. It has a playground and volleyball court. On Friday’s they have a family movie night at the amphitheater. Most Saturdays in the summer they offer crafts and activities for kids at the beach.

The surrounding area also has plenty of activities to offer: Local restaurants, ice cream, hiking, kayaking/boating, fishing, etc.

    Mosquito Lake State Park Campground

    Great State Park Campground

We just got back from our first trip to Mosquito Lake State Park Campground. All in all, it was a great experience.

We stayed in site 67, which is a waterfront site, with electric. The water is about 25 yards from the pad, but is visible from the entire site. The site was spacious, but not as private as some of the others. There is some woods between this site and the sites on either side, but other sites are visible. The fire pits and picnic tables were staggered, so it created some distance to make it feel more private.

The campground as a whole, was very quiet. We stayed from Wednesday to Friday. The group next to us seemed a little rowdy when we first pulled in, but by 10:00 there was no noise anywhere near us.

Most sites seemed pretty level from side to side, but where we were, several had a slope from front to back. Away from the waterfront, most sites looked pretty level. The amount of space between sites varied from site to site. Some sites had woods on both sides, while others were pretty open. Some had nice large grassy areas, others were much smaller. Sites from 214-224 are in a cul de sac and are water front, but they were pretty close together with very little privacy between sites, if any. They are very close to the water though.

There are bathrooms and water scatter about, but from what I saw there was only 1 shower house.

Wal-mart and other shopping and restaurants were about 3 miles away. Park was easy to get to, only one turn for us off the highway. Lake was great for kayaking and paddleboarding. Very nice dog park in a different part of the park. There is a boat launch accessible from inside the campground.

Dump station has 2 lanes which was nice when checking out. Fresh water fill up was also located near the dump station.

Linesville Campground — Pymatuning State Park

Great Park, Close to the Water!

The Linesville Campground is a mid-sized state park campground with level, wooded sites, right on the Pymantuning Lake. A short walk to the marina which hires boats and sells snacks& fuel. There is a campground fish cleaning station with complimentary fridges/freezers.

The amenities are well kept with plenty of space, located in the center of the park. There is also a laundry. They accommodate tents, RV’s and have cabins also. RV dump station and water fill up conveniently located in the center of the grounds.

The township of Linesville is just 5min drive from the park entrance. Great weekend escape from Pittsburgh. They welcome furry friends!

Guide to Ashtabula

Cabins near Ashtabula, Ohio vary significantly in availability and quality across seasons. The region sits along Lake Erie's southern shore at approximately 700 feet elevation with humid continental climate patterns bringing snowy winters and warm summers. Access roads to many campgrounds include rural routes that may require extra navigation attention during winter months when lake effect snow is common.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Thompson/Grand River Valley KOA Holiday provides access to both fishing and swimming lakes where visitors can enjoy the water. As one camper noted, "This Campground is quiet, full of fun, for families or older people. Beautiful area. Many pull through lots, with patios. 50. 30. Full hookup, (sewer and Electric) back in, pull through, tent sites, cabins, teepees. Swimming pool, private bathrooms and showers. Fishing lake, swimming lake, trails."

Lake activities: At Virginia's Beach Campground, water recreation dominates the experience. "There is lake access for swimming, boat launch and Jetsons etc. It was quiet and simple. We were there for 3 days and loved it," shares one visitor. The campground offers direct Lake Erie access with modest shoreline areas for water activities.

Mini-golf and recreation: Thousand Trails Kenisee Lake in Jefferson offers several outdoor recreation options beyond cabin stays. A visitor reports, "This park is very large and has a park-like setting with 2 lakes. There is fishing on the lakes and the campground has rowboats available to use. They have all the amenities a family could want such as swimming pool, playground, mini-golf, and more!"

What campers like

Spacious camping areas: At Linesville Campground — Pymatuning State Park, visitors appreciate the open layout. "Nice and spacious sites. Great launch area from the campground to set out on your kayak or paddle board. Walkable to the marina and beach area. Beach area was small but clean and had new sand," one camper noted about their experience.

Clean facilities: Kenisee's Grand River Campground maintains high standards for their facilities. A visitor mentioned, "Very clean bathrooms and showers. Multiple fishing ponds, Friday night bingo, bands, fishing tournament for kids, duck race, Christmas in July and many other activities. Many amenities and very clean bathrooms and showers."

Direct lake access: Waterfront cabin options at Virginia's Beach Campground offer immediate lake views. "We loved it. Our site was right on Lake Erie. There was nothing except a drop of about 25' to the lake," shared one camper. These waterfront accommodations provide straight access to the shore.

What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin accommodations require advance booking, especially during peak season. At Jamestown Campground — Pymatuning State Park, a visitor noted, "We booked a waterfront site and were disappointed to learn that was not actually the case. There was a little bit of a swampy area behind us but the lake was further away." Always confirm site details when booking.

Seasonal considerations: Many cabin rentals close during winter months, though some remain available. "Flush toilets and hot showers are available in the bath houses. The showers do not have a changing area within the shower unit or an area to store your towel/clothes within the shower unit," reports one camper about facilities at Jamestown Campground.

Internet connectivity: Cell service and WiFi can be unreliable at many Ashtabula area cabin locations. A guest at Virginia's Beach Campground observed, "Internet is not very good if you need it go to the office. Not many people go camping to be connected though. I have Verizon and the service is weak and spotty."

Tips for camping with families

Children's activities: Indian Creek RV Resort (now Sun Retreats Geneva on the Lake) offers regular programming for kids. One visitor mentioned, "Some of their usual events and programs were unavailable but they offered craft kits for children to pick up and do at their own campsite in lieu of the usual program. We enjoyed their beautiful put-put course and ice cream stand."

Swimming options: Multiple water recreation choices keep children entertained during summer stays. A visitor to Thompson/Grand River Valley KOA Holiday reported, "The kids loved both the pool and the lake. The breakfast pizza was great. The food prices were very reasonable. The wrist band for kid activities is well worth it."

Site selection for families: Choose sites based on proximity to facilities and recreation areas. "We stayed on the pet end and got a spot near the lake. But also this meant people were walking through our site to go walk to the water," noted one visitor at Jamestown Campground, highlighting the importance of considering foot traffic patterns when selecting a site with children.

Tips from RVers

Leveling considerations: Many cabin and RV sites require adjustment for level placement. At Jamestown Campground, one RVer shared, "The site was not level, but we were able to get the tent trailer level without too much effort." Always bring leveling blocks or stabilizers when visiting cabins in this region.

Water pressure variations: Some facilities experience inconsistent utilities. A visitor to Virginia's Beach noted, "We stayed for one night. Beautiful setting with great views of the lake. What a gem. Our only complaint is we had extremely low water pressure so we filled our tank and used our pump. Problem solved!"

Remote work capabilities: For those needing to work while staying in cabin accommodations, plan accordingly. A visitor to Kenisee Lake RV Campground advised, "Kenisee Lake RV Campground is a wonderful place to work from remotely if you have an external antenna to cellular internet. The campground is clean with plenty of open space and trails."
