Kerr Lake State Recreation Area spans over 50,000 acres with 800 miles of shoreline along the North Carolina-Virginia border, offering campgrounds that operate between March and October with varying seasonal schedules. Water levels fluctuate seasonally, reaching their highest in spring with an average lake depth of 30 feet. Most pet friendly camping near Henderson, North Carolina sites require a minimum two-night stay during peak summer weekends, with reservations available up to 11 months in advance through the North Carolina State Parks reservation system.
What to do
Swimming access from campsites: At J.C. Cooper Campground, many sites have direct water access. "The site was near the water with very nice lake views right from the tent. Great for swimming, kayaking, SUP, and other water activities," notes Sergey G. Most waterfront sites have gradual entry points suitable for dogs and children.
Fishing opportunities: Bring fishing equipment for bank fishing directly from lakefront sites. "Being from Missouri and moved to North Carolina I spent a week here and it has been so far one of the best places for fishing," reports Tim at Nutbush Bridge Campground. Catfish and bass are common catches, especially in early morning or evening hours.
Stargazing: Clear night skies provide excellent stargazing conditions away from city lights. "Fires are allowed and it was great to site and watch the stars at night. Bugs were not too bad either," shares Andy K. about his experience at Satterwhite Point. Many campsites have open views to the sky while maintaining shade during daytime.
What campers like
Spacious waterfront sites: Hibernia Campground offers large sites with privacy. "Sites are large and private. Our waterfront site had its own little beach where we could swim and launch our kayak. When we camped in the woods, the other campers were well spaced," explains Pamela H. Waterfront sites often include small sandy beaches for easy water entry.
Clean facilities: North Bend Park maintains excellent bathroom facilities. "The facilities are well maintained and they have handicap bathroom and shower stalls," reports Heather. Many campers mention the private uni-sex bathrooms with individual toilets, sinks, and showers.
Quiet atmosphere: Despite popularity during peak season, quiet hours are generally respected. "It was wonderful to see life returning to normal after being locked down with Covid for so long. Everyone was feeling it. Dogs barked, kids played, country music was all around us, but by 10 pm it was amazingly peaceful for having so many people in one area," shares Pam R. about her stay at J.C. Cooper Campground.
What you should know
Water hookup distances: Prepare for long water hose requirements at several campgrounds. "NOTE - to bring at least 75 feet of water hose, as some sites have long runs from in front of camper," advises Mark H. about J.C. Cooper Campground. Several campers mention needing 60-75 feet of hose at various sites throughout Kerr Lake.
Site leveling challenges: Bullocksville Campground has varied terrain. "Stayed here midweek in the summer. Very happy I drove around first before reserving a site. Not all sites are flat and some are very hard to drive into," explains Jeff K. Non-electric sites are often more sloped than those with hookups.
Limited amenities nearby: Stock up on supplies before arrival. "The nearest grocery store (Food Lion) was about 15 minutes drive from our campground. Firewood was available for purchase at the gate. We didn't notice it at first and it took us quite a bit of driving around to find firewood since Food Lion didn't sell it," shares Sergey G. The closest major shopping is typically 15-20 minutes from most campgrounds.
Tips for camping with families
Beach selection for kids: Kimball Point Campground offers excellent swimming areas. "The water is very clear! You can see probably about 5-6 feet down. We were on site #75, right on the shore line. Several sites are waterfront. There is a small playground, several sandy beach areas and a boat launch," explains Jess. Most family-oriented sites feature gradual-entry swimming areas.
Playground access: Several campgrounds feature playgrounds for children. "We camped for the weekend as a mom/daughter getaway (me, my toddler, and my mom). Daughter had a blast swimming in the lake and catching her very first fish!!! Our site was in a loop with a few other sites. It was a nice setup. Each site had a fire pit and picnic table. There was also a small playground that we took my daughter to," shares Crystal K. about Hibernia Campground.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: Morning and evening hours offer the best wildlife spotting times. "We love seeing the wildlife," mentions Sharon M. about Rolling View Campground. Herons, ospreys, and occasionally bald eagles can be spotted around the shorelines.
Tips from RVers
Site selection strategy: Preview sites before selecting when possible. "Large park with a hodgepodge of level sites and not so much. Boat ramp, swim beach and a small amphitheater. No water sites with electric," advises John R. about Rolling View Campground. Many RVers recommend driving through available loops before committing to a site.
Water and electric positioning: At Henderson Point Campground, hookup locations vary by site. "From what I could tell the campground was booked that weekend but you could barely hear any noise from your neighbors. The only complaints would be that the bathrooms are kind of far from this site (I never actually went but imagine a good 5 minute walk) and the dump station is about a mile away," notes Sarah about site 68. Extension cords and water hoses are essential equipment for most sites.
Site length considerations: Many site descriptions on reservation websites may not accurately reflect usable space. "It says 40 feet which I assume is true. But we fit our 27 foot travel trailer in there and had a really hard time wedging our tow vehicle (F250) in there. Parked at an odd angle on the tent pad," reports Sarah about Nutbush Bridge Campground. Adding 10-15 feet to turning radius requirements is recommended when selecting sites.
