What to do
Local wineries: 15-minute drive from Midway Campground Resort's yurt accommodations, which position glampers near several wineries for tasting experiences. "We kayaked along the Yadkin River and camped at one of the canoe campsites. There was very little anemities at these particular sites but that was the point of our visit. Great trails for hiking and beautiful views of the piedmont from the top of the knob," notes a visitor to Pilot Mountain State Park Campground.
Rock climbing access: under 30 minutes from glamping sites with Stone Mountain's granite dome offering multiple climbing routes. A visitor to Stone Mountain explains: "We camped at RV site 40 and I think it's the best. There's a roaring large creek that flows behind the site and a grassy field full of deer beside it. Also we checked out the backpack hike camp spots (5) they're a good hike (1.5 mile uphill) but so beautiful, on the creek, 2 are near a small waterfall."
Seasonal outdoor movies and arts & crafts: available at Forest Lake RV and Camping Resort which offers glamping tents. "We were only there Fri-Sun but there were activities planned to include an outdoor movie (with free popcorn), arts & crafts for the kids, candy bar bingo, and a DJ. There is a putt putt course, pool, adults only pool and lounge, family lounge with small arcade games, pool table, and other games," shares one visitor.
What campers like
Private waterfront sites: Some Lake Myers RV Resort glamping accommodations include lake views. "We stayed 21 days had a blast nothing but good things to say here thanks Pete for all your kindness," wrote one happy visitor about their extended stay at Lake Myers.
Multiple shower facilities: Most glamping sites offer access to modern bathhouses with hot water. "The bathhouse was new and well maintained. I would recommend this place to anyone," shares a visitor to Lake Norman State Park who appreciated the cleanliness of facilities.
Fishing access without leaving camp: Several glamping locations offer stocked ponds or lake access. "Awesome places to hike and places to climb," notes a visitor to Pilot Mountain State Park Campground. Another camper at Midway Campground Resort mentioned: "We loved the pond that you could fish in and it had a good amount of fish (I seen more then I caught). It was quiet and relaxing."
What you should know
Seasonal booking challenges: Many glamping options are fully booked 3-4 months in advance during fall color season. "We camped in December and there weren't many people there at all, maybe 4 other campers all weekend," reports a visitor to Stone Mountain State Park Campground.
Varying levels of privacy: Site separation differs dramatically between glamping locations. "The campsites were perfect for a few days and there were enough hiking trails around to keep us busy. Most of the trails were very easy, but the view on top of Stone Mountain was nice," shared one visitor who found the experience pleasant but not exceptional.
Power supply varies: Some glamping tents have limited electrical capacity. A visitor to Oak Hollow City Campground suggests: "Make sure you have at least 50 feet [of cord]. Also there was dog poo right by the electrical unit. The bathrooms are pretty far and you can also see a house very close to the site."
Tips for camping with families
Kids' activities scheduling: Plan around programmed events at glamping resorts. "This campground has so many sites and they are well laid out and spacious. They have 30 amp and 50 amp sites to suit your needs. There is a nice restaurant to eat at, a small convenience store, arcade games, 3 pools and a ton of activities," notes a visitor to Forest Lake RV and Camping Resort.
Tent platforms provide dry camping: Many glamping sites include raised wooden platforms. "We tent camped on Aug 28. This was our first time setting up on a platform and it was very easy. Our site had a great view of the beautiful lake. There was a pool our kids could swim in until 7:00pm. They let us borrow a metal fire pit so we could make s'mores," reports a family at Oak Hollow City Campground.
Age-appropriate facilities: Some glamping sites have dedicated areas for different age groups. "Friendly host, close to lake and well shaded, clean bathrooms, large enough tent sites, great for families," mentions a visitor to Lake Norman State Park Campground.
Tips from RVers
Size restrictions for glamping sites: Some tent glamping options aren't suitable for large groups. "My wife and I have been hunting for a new close camp ground. We may have a winner! Midway RV is very clean, quiet and friendly. The pool is fantastic and close to areas to go shopping or sightseeing," reports a visitor to Midway Campground Resort.
Road quality affects access: Some higher-end glamping locations have access challenges. "Packed, but a quiet off season. We had a nice time visiting Mocksville. There are a lot of cute restaurants near by. The campground is mostly annual people with permanent lots. We don't mind that at all. Those types always seem to be laid back and quiet. The spots are really close together. And the roads are sooo narrow," warns a visitor to Lake Myers RV Resort.
Electrical hookup locations matter: Placement of outlets can affect your setup options. "Big Rigs Beware: This is a decent family-friendly campground but is quite difficult to navigate the roads and sites if you have a larger rig. Nice pool and good pet area," advises another RVer about Lake Myers.
