    Statesville RV Park I-77

    Right off of Interstate

This KOA is RIGHT off of the interstate. If you are in midtravel and need a place to overnight this is a nice KOA for that. The camping cabins are cozy, we stayed in a single which has 1 dbl bed and twin sized bunk bed. Staff was very friendly. I wouldn't consider this a camping destination.

    Lake Norman State Park Campground

    Fantastic quiet get away

We stayed in the new glamping cabin #2. Very clean, comfortable bed, nice AC, lovely porch to relax on. All cabins are in walking distance to the bathrooms and showers. Those as well were pretty clean for a camp ground, I was pleasantly surprised. The path to the bathrooms light up at night so you can find your way very easy in the dark. Camp ground itself was very clean and I often saw the staff working on cleaning it and interacting with the campers. The designated swimming area was like a piece of heaven. Small not to overly packed, very clean beach. We plan on coming pack to do tent camping with our dog, fantastic family or romantic couple retreat.

    Cane Creek Park

A Great Place for the Whole Family.

Located just outside historic Waxhaw NC, Cane Creek is part of the NC Soil Conservative Sites. They offer day passes,$4.00 per car where you can launch you kayak canoe or fishing boat. If you like Bass Fishing, they rank as one of the best spots around. They have swimming areas for both day users and one for campers. This really is a gem within Union Co NC. The campground is on the other side of the lake. They have camping for RV’s, Cabin Rentals and tent sites for either large groups or individuals. The hiking trail is beautiful and takes you around the whole lake. Watch for horses, as this is a great place for riders too.

    Charlotte-Fort Mill KOA

Great for trip to Charlotte NC

We came here to do some trailer maintenance and because it is very close to home. We were not expecting it to be a great camping experience, but we’re pleasantly surprised! The staff were extremely helpful and friendly, the campsites were clean, and the bath houses were newly updated and immaculate. The roads in the section we stayed in were a bit rough (a combination of asphalt and gravel), but perfectly fine for camping. Most of the sites have good shade, but unfortunately our site was in full sun. Our site had full hookups, and a picnic table that was pretty rickety. No fire ring. The sites are very close together, and most are back to back sharing a driveway. Personally we prefer a more secluded camping spot, but this KOA is perfect for an overnight on your way to another location, a trip to nearby Charlotte, or like us, utilizing the full hookups for some waterline maintenance.

    Cane Creek Park

    Great clean campground

We have stayed at Cane Creek 2x now and enjoy the park so much. Lake, hiking trails and nice wooded campsites with fire rings and close proximity to bath houses. Playground for kids, little store, friendly staff. Beach swimming area closed due to Covid but looks nice. Park on other side of lake has picnic shelters, more trails, frisbee golf and kayak rentals that will open after Covid. Only problem is that both times we visited there was a storm and power went out for hours. Can’t really do anything about that!

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

    Good

So, if you end up in a crap site you might drop those 4 stars to 3. Its going to be impossible to determine a great site from a bad without going there since the only pic they have online is from site 1. B loop, has a lot of RVs. A loop, has the amphitheater. C loop, felt like the smallest loop and really close to the entry hiking trail. We've stayed in both A and C. C loop, site 48, is where we stayed this trip. Its a good site. Close to the showers, which are clean and well maintained. Close to the trash bins and water spicket as well. Behind the site is a great little "valley" to explore if you have kids/dogs. Has awesome trees for hammocks and the tent pad doesnt slope. Did not love the fire pit at this site but the sites to the left and right are great. Overall, tons of sites and good clean facilities. The trails are plentiful so you shouldnt run out of places to explore.

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

Historical get away in the forest

The swaying of pine trees with the smell of the forest greets us at this easily accessible site in our motorhome. Electric and water hookups at our site, dump station available on the way out, camp host available. Picnic tables, fire pit available at our site. Lots of shade, plenty of trails that cover this State Park. The Kron house nearby, the swimming pool ( closed at time of our visit). The town of Albemarle 10 minutes away and Badin lake right down the mountain. Lots of history here just stop at the ranger station for information, maps and more.

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

Family friendly, clean, quiet considering close proximity of neighbors

Very family friendly camp ground. Sites are close together, but not too terrible. Sites include tent pad, fire ring with grate, table, lantern hook. Facilities we're kept nicely, host was very helpful and makes rounds in the evenings with firewood ($5 bundle). Hiked the trail head near the campground, to the river.. lovely hike NO RIVER ACCESS FOR FISHING though... Embankment is too steep, we learned this after the 2.5 mile hike with the kids... Went down the road to the lake the next day (they have boat rentals, though we didn't get one).

    Morrow Mountain State Park Campground

    Pretty Basic

Plentiful campsites, we arrived on a Friday without a reservation and were able to get a spot. There is a swimming pool, but we didn't swim. Some hikes nearby, but far from the swimming spots in the Uwharrie National Forest. No bathrooms near the campsites, but there were spigots with potable water. The tent pads were even and well packed. All sites had a picnic bench and a fire pit with a grate.

Guide to Cornelius

Cabin rentals near Cornelius, North Carolina provide direct access to Lake Norman, the largest man-made lake in the Carolinas with 520 miles of shoreline. The area's moderate climate keeps average summer highs around 89°F, making water activities possible from April through October. Seasonal temperature variations influence camping comfort, with fall offering cooler nights ideal for campfires at woodland cabin sites.

What to do

Fishing from shore access points: Lake Norman State Park Campground provides multiple fishing areas with catch-and-release options. "My wife and our four kids have had a great time. Plenty of shade and plenty to do. We fished, rode bikes, hiked and saw plenty of wildlife," reports Caleb S.

Hiking on maintained trails: Several cabin locations offer direct trail access for day hikes. "Lake Norman State Park has plenty of walking trails and mountain bike trails with a boat ramp and 'beach' a short drive or a hike away," explains Mauricio R. at Lake Norman State Park Campground.

Winter camping activities: Unlike summer-focused sites, Lake Curriher Wilderness remains operational year-round with fewer crowds. "We hike in to the remote campsite on the lake. The cabins here are also great. Clean and nice location. I would suggest the overlook cabin," recommends Ben S. at Lake Curriher Wilderness.

What campers like

Cleanliness standards: Many cabins receive high marks for maintenance. "I have camped all across the US and this was the nicest and cleanest campground I have ever been in. Fantastic experience. I highly highly recommend!" shares Andrew G. about Lake Norman State Park Campground.

Family-friendly environments: Dan Nicholas Park offers recreational facilities beyond just cabins. "We live just a few miles from Dan Nicholas, but love to 'get away' there any chance we get. Plenty to do, super nice folks, and roomy, shady sites," notes Lisa M. at Dan Nicholas Park.

Proximity to attractions: Carowinds Camp Wilderness provides accommodation near theme parks. "We had a blast; even with younger kids. RV sites and cabins, friendly staff, free shuttle to the amusement park, great community center, and more," explains Joe G. from Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort.

What you should know

Noise considerations: Some cabin locations experience environmental noise. "The campground is right by the airport so the planes are pretty loud but not much louder than the screams of the people on the roller coasters," mentions Creighton C. about Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort.

Reservation timing: Many cabin sites fill quickly during peak seasons. "It was surprisingly busy, almost all sites occupied. There is not much space between the sides, but the park is huge and right at the lake," shares Birgit H. about Lake Norman State Park.

Bathroom facilities: Quality varies significantly between locations. "The bath houses are in very poor shape. There appears to be suspect, microbial growth all over the men's side (black mold). The bath houses also aren't cleaned on a regular basis," warns Robert D. about Dan Nicholas Park.

Tips for camping with families

Children's activities: Look for cabin locations with structured recreation. "The park has more to do other than the campground it is a wonderful place if you have young kids," notes Eddie B. about Dan Nicholas Park.

Safety features: Some locations offer after-hours security contacts. "The gates close at 5pm during the fall/winter. Slightly around that time, the retired police chief came around to introduce himself and give me his cell number. He is just up the street and was kind to offer this for extra safety," shares Shannon S. at Lake Curriher Wilderness.

Water access safety: Beach areas may require additional fees. "Beach is only accessible at a fee if you want to swim. A wristband is given to determine who paid," advises Mauricio R. about Lake Norman State Park.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Prepare for uneven terrain at some locations. "The sites are fine for a quick overnight, right off the highway," explains Kevin H. about Statesville RV Park I-77, noting many sites require leveling equipment.

Off-season benefits: Consider winter cabin stays for reduced crowds. "We stayed here on our way North to head home. It's in a decent location, the sites are level with full hook ups," mentions Molly F. about Carowinds Camp Wilderness Resort.

Campground connectivity: Some locations offer reliable internet service. "We've loved staying at Yates due to the flexibility and excellent communication of the owners. There aren't really any extras here but if you're just looking for reliable water/electrical/sewer and wifi near Charlotte this is a fantastic option," states Mariah S. from Yates Family Camping.
