Best Tent Camping near Medina, NY

Medina, New York provides limited options for tent camping in the surrounding area. Dream Lake Campground, located about 35 miles south in Warsaw, stands as one of the few established tent campgrounds in the region. The KOA Campground Medina Wildwood Lake on Countyline Road also accommodates tent campers, though amenity information is limited. Riverview Camp Ground & Marina offers another primitive tent camping option northeast of Medina, situated along waterways in the general vicinity.

Tent sites at Dream Lake Campground include standard amenities such as drinking water, picnic tables, and fire rings. The campground operates seasonally from May 1 through October 25, making it unavailable during winter months. Sites feature drive-in access suitable for tent setups. Campers should confirm reservation requirements before arrival, as the campground accepts advance bookings. Basic facilities include toilets, showers, and trash disposal. Dream Lake differs from more primitive camping areas by offering a camp store for supplies and allowing pets on leash.

The camping experience varies significantly between locations near Medina. Dream Lake provides a more developed camping environment with regular amenities. A visitor commented, "Nice friendly environment, clean facilities. Lots to do for kids and adults. Weekend activities." Most tent sites in the area require standard camping gear including water containers, proper food storage, and weather-appropriate shelter. Campers seeking more primitive experiences may need to venture farther from Medina to find suitable locations. The regional tent camping options tend toward established campgrounds rather than backcountry opportunities. Evening temperatures can drop significantly even during summer months, requiring appropriate sleeping gear for tent campers year-round.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Amazing state park, crappy campground

The state park is breathtaking. The campground is horrendous. The restrooms were disgusting. The site barely fit our one tent (8man Coleman) even though it was advertised as a two tent site. The camp fire ring had no solid base- it just sat on the grass and fires would not stay lit. The quiet hours were not enforced. Yelling and loud music kept us up until ridiculous hours. I would not rate this as family friendly.

    Genesee Country Campground

Great spot - esp for tents!

What a great place this was!

Everyone was very nice and bathrooms were so clean! To top it off the sites for tents are amazing - so private and pretty. In fact it’s so private we were able to set up our own portable toilet and have complete privacy.

Nice little store too! Overall this place was great and we’d stay here again in a heartbeat. Very easy place to spend the night.

Also they have golfing here and tent areas back up to the 9th hole (but still separated so you don’t feel like you are right on top of it) so you can easily knock around there and do a little golfing too!

Four Mile Creek State Park Campground

    Field Camping

It's not all bad! It took a while to find our site in the dark as site markers are small. The sites are decent size, the bathrooms are clean but spiders will hang out. Showers are hot. Sites are available with electric and there is an RV dump station if you have one. There are a lot of RVs at this campground, a large playground, and a field with soccer goals (no net). Niagara Falls is 15 or so miles away, and Buffalo NY is a short drive. The bathroom building has an outdoor sink with heated water, and this is also where the trash bins are.  Firewood is available in front of many nearby homes (a couple of miles, max,and $4-5 a bundle). The fire pits are either low or leaning, so we found a camp stove to be essential. It can get quite windy, we saw a tent buckle and our stakes were pulled up from the wind. It can get loud at night and it doesn't seem as if quiet hours are enforced. I'd stay again but only if a more private campground was unavailable.

    Golden Hill State Park Campground

    Quiet Campground Over Lake Ontario

We camped at Golden Hill over the weekend of July 24-26, 2020. Due to COVID, advance reservations are required to book a spot at any NY state campground. We had site 47 in loop C, which was across the road from the lake view sites. I recommend sites 40-45 for lake-front views. Loops A and B were more crowded and more suitable to RV trailers and rigs (we were camping in a pop-up camper). Site 47 was large and had a few trees. The campfire ring was right against the pad, which made it difficult to position our pop-up so that it was away from the fire ring.

Things to consider: There are 2 bathrooms in the campground, one near the A-B loops and one near the entrance. It was quite a hike in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom from our site. Some sites in the A-B loops are right next to each other, and we preferred the space for the sites in the C loop.

Wonderful things: The views are spectacular, particularly at sunset. The campground was quiet at night. The Niagara Wine trail is close to this campground, and Niagara Falls is about a 50 minute drive away. We hiked Devil's Hole and Whirlpool State Parks on this camping trip. The showers in the bathrooms were phenomenal - very clean with hot water and a private dressing area next to the shower. Showers were ADA compliant and had shower seats.

    Hamlin Beach State Park Campground

Is this a spot? Dirty and loud but a nice beach

Big park with several loops.  Separate and across two roads from the Beach section of the Park. Got a reservation for Friday and Saturday but the spot in loop D was an inclined driveway next to the high voltage boxes for the campground.  Had to move the fire ring after smoking ourselves out the first night.  Right across from the building they called a bath house.  Filthy, urinal broken, one shower broken in mens.   Feces on the floor in womens.  Friday night quiet hours did not exist.  Spent Saturday early am listening to the neighbor loudly declare her preferences in music, men and liquor.  No Ranger in sight.

Minor redeeming qualities:  Nice beach and bike trails across road from campground.  Three lane dump station (only one for a four loop campground with 100s of "spots")

Beware:  Rigs approaching from East there are very low bridges (11' 3') between Rochester and the Park on the Parkway.

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Beautiful Park

So Letchworth State Park is beautiful. It's also tremendous, 18 miles long covering the east and west side of the Geneseo River. There is over 100 miles of trails intersecting the park. The campground itself is made up of loops with only electrical hookups , no water or sewer connections , just water spiquets positioned throughout the loop and 1common bathroom in each loop. There is no wifi in any of the camping areas so if you are dependant on it for any reason this is not the place for you. Only at certain points in the park will you get a signal

    HTR Niagara Campground

Covid update on one of my favorites

Once again, the Branches of Niagara comes through stunningly. Even in the midst of the lockdowns and augmented restrictions, TBON went above and beyond to be sure we had the safest and most enjoyable time we could during our stay.

Bathrooms, as usual, were pristine, with regular visits from the staff to disinfect and make sure campers were satisfied. This is a campground of several lakeside cabins and mostly RVs, so they were also seldom in use, making them even more accommodating for us during this time of distancing. They notified us in advance that they were still open and what was functional under the strict and ever changing NY requirements. Note: as of Summer 2020, masks were required to enter the store and check in areas, but not required elsewhere. Kids activities were augmented to allow for distancing and remain completely outdoors.

We got site 10, which was excellent both for proximity to everything, hookups, privacy, space and views. This particular site had ample, mowed and cleared room behind the spacious site as well where you can set up your hammocks and relax in the wooded shade. Directly in front of the site is a clearing which allows a view to the pool and pond-side of the campground. It was quiet and clean.

Stef is always friendly, and the camp store rents a number of items to add to the fun - paddle boats, kayaks, 4 seater bike surreys, peddle carts, and other fun things. Zip lines were both still open. Activities were updated to reflect safety during C-19.

Beautiful, peaceful, spacious campground with so many hidden gems. The lake is pretty and the campground’s access from the Grand Island side of Buffalo to Niagara Falls is very convenient, yet away from the loud commotion and traffic. We highly recommend!

    Letchworth State Park Campground

    Good Camping inside the Park

The campgrounds are conveniently located inside the Park so easy to get to the amazing falls towards the south as well as the dam in the north. We were in loop 300 which does not allow pets. Decent bathhouses right opposite our site. Our site was a gravel drive with a grassy area containing the picnic table and fire ring. Unfortunately due to rain the day before the grass was extremely muddy which make it hard to get to the fire ring. There was also white a lot of noise from adjacent sites, we could hear everyone's conversations and screaming kids. There was a laundry facility but no dishwashing.

Guide to Medina

Tent campsites near Medina, New York cluster primarily in established campgrounds rather than dispersed areas. The region sits within the Erie-Ontario Lowlands, characterized by flat to gently rolling terrain with elevations rarely exceeding 650 feet. Summer temperatures average 70-80°F during daytime hours, while spring and fall camping requires preparation for overnight temperatures that can drop into the 40s.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Dream Lake Campground provides stocked fishing ponds where campers can catch and release without needing a license. "I love this campground very family friendly lots of activities been going here 6 years now and never have had a bad time," notes camper Robyn M.

Water recreation: Riverview Camp Ground & Marina offers direct water access for boating and fishing along connecting waterways. The facility includes boat slips and launch facilities for campers bringing watercraft. Water levels remain most consistent from June through September.

Weekend activities: Scheduled events occur regularly at campgrounds near Medina. "The snack house food is great, if you don't feel like cooking they offer a nice menu almost anyone would love," reports Nick O about Dream Lake Campground. Activities typically include outdoor games, themed weekends, and seasonal celebrations.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Tent campers consistently mention facility cleanliness as a priority. "Nice friendly environment, clean facilities. Lots to do for kids and adults," notes one visitor to Dream Lake Campground. Restrooms and shower houses at established sites are generally well-maintained during peak season.

Campground atmosphere: The social environment varies significantly between tent camping locations near Medina. Some campers seek family-oriented settings with planned activities, while others prefer quieter experiences. Management style impacts camper satisfaction, with one visitor to KOA Campground Medina Wildwood Lake noting the importance of consistent rule enforcement.

Convenience amenities: For tent campers preferring some comforts, campgrounds offering camp stores, food service, and recreational rentals earn higher marks. Dream Lake receives mentions for its camp store and food options, allowing campers to travel with less extensive provisions.

What you should know

Seasonal limitations: The camping season in the Medina area runs primarily from May through October due to weather conditions. Most tent camping facilities close completely during winter months, with no off-season accommodations available. Spring camping often involves muddy conditions as ground thaws.

Reservation requirements: Most established tent sites near Medina require advance reservations, particularly for weekend stays during summer months. Holiday weekends typically book 3-6 months in advance. Some campgrounds maintain a limited number of first-come sites for last-minute arrivals.

Management considerations: Campground management styles vary significantly. At Dream Lake Campground, one camper noted: "Nice amenities. Nasty owners create a terrible atmosphere. Not relaxing." Rule enforcement consistency appears to impact camper experiences substantially across regional campgrounds.

Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Families camping near Medina should research scheduled activities before arrival. Dream Lake Campground receives consistent mentions for child-friendly programming: "Lots to do for kids and adults. Weekend activities," according to visitor feedback. Most organized activities occur Friday evenings through Sunday mornings.

Menu options: Families appreciate campgrounds offering food service options for meals when cooking becomes impractical. "The snack house food is great, if you don't feel like cooking they offer a nice menu almost anyone would love. Highly recommend," shares one Dream Lake visitor. This allows families to pack less cooking equipment for tent camping trips.

Site selection: Family campers should request sites away from main roads and communal facilities when making reservations. Sites near playgrounds benefit families with younger children, while teenagers prefer locations near recreational areas. Corner sites typically provide more space for multiple tents.

Tips from RVers

Tent-RV compatibility: Tent campers staying at combined tent/RV campgrounds should request sites in tent-specific loops when available. This improves the tent camping experience by reducing generator noise and traffic. Some tent campers report feeling overlooked at primarily RV-oriented facilities.

Utility limitations: Tent campers at primarily RV-focused campgrounds may find fewer amenities designed for their needs. Electric hookups often require long extension cords, and water access points may be positioned for RV connections rather than tent site convenience.

Shared facilities: RV campgrounds with tent sites typically maintain shared restrooms and shower facilities. Tent campers note inconsistent cleanliness standards during peak season weekends when facilities experience heavier use. Morning and evening shower facility congestion occurs regularly at combined-use campgrounds.
