The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone

Great One Night Stop - Would Have Stayed Longer!

We scheduled a pull through for 1 night last minute due to an unexpected change in plans. We are a full-time traveling family (2 kids - 8 & 13) and 2 English Bulldogs. We have a Class A motorhome and flat tow a Jeep. The campground was beautiful and easy to get in and out of. The sites were level and great size with nice spacing in between. The location was nice too! We did head over to the casino briefly and enjoyed that. We also took a drive to the University of Syracuse to tour the campus. Clean and wonderful park. Would definitely recommend.

    Butternut Hill RV Campground

Choose Butternut Hill for special local events!

This is a small campground set up on the periphery of Butternut Hill farm which is located on the main Route 20 in Bouckville NY.  At the time I submitted my review, I was not able to make edits on the basic campground listing;   I am not sure why the Dyrt platform wouldnt let me update the important details, but you can get more info and make reservations on the campground webpage which is here:

    https://butternuthill.net/

The campground is in a convenient location in Bouckville,  a small upstate NY village with a concentration of numerous antique shops, which is a draw for collectors in the area. There is also a famous Inn and restaurant, the Landmark Inn, which anchors the town, adjacent to a trailhead for a hiking trail along the historic Chenango Canal, an offshoot of the Erie Canal.

The meadows and fields of Butternut Hill are the superb festival setting for several regional events, including several Antique shows, the Central New York Fiber Festival, a craft fair and a car show, events that are scheduled a few times a month throughout the summer.

The campground is adjacent to the festival fields, lining a forest edge with expansive views of the surrounding valley. During special events, vendors and exhibitors have a convenient and inexpensive place to stay that is not far from the exhibit tents and festival fields, but people attending the events can stay there too, or campsites may be reserved at other times through the summer, on a daily, weekly or even monthly basis.

Many of the sites are for RV's, which have electric and water hookups along with a picnic table and fire pit; rates fro these rang $40-50. There are also primitive tent sites which have a grassy tent area and fire pit but no picnic table and cost  $30 per night. There is a cozy log camper cabin available, at a very inexpensive price of $60 per night (bring your own linens). All camping spots are in close walking distance to the bath house, which has water, showers, and bathrooms. (Additional porta potties are set up during festival events.)

I was there during the Fiber Festival, and I was impressed at how well organized the programing was, and how clean everything was despite large attendance. In addition, it rained really hard one day of the event, and though the access roads got a little muddy, the campsites seem well drained and did not get muddy. The campsites all back to the woods on the west side, so this serves as a good windbreak too.

The campground office has some basic camping supplies available, but an advantage of being there during a festival event was a nice food tent and a variety of food trucks offering delicious fare!  If you were coming from a distance to attend one of the local special events, this is a good place to stay, though of course busy during the day. If you wanted to camp here at a non event time, you would find it to be a quiet pastoral location with access to some hiking and fishing spots in close proximity. For staying in the area, the camper cabin would be a great all-weather option if you can get it!

    Cherry Grove Campground

    Very nice small campground

We stayed at Cherry Grove in May ‘23 with a Fifth wheel camper. The park is very well maintained.  Sites are good sized and packed gravel.  WiFi is very good, as is cell service from Verizon and T-Mobile. It Most of the campground is seasonal, but all of the campers were friendly.

    Green Lakes State Park Campground

Good experience - lovely swimming area and lakes!

We had a great stay at this park. We enjoyed biking and exploring the lovely blue-green lakes. The swimming area was awesome. We were on the edge of a the large RV section in Pinewoods with premium sites. However, they are all in the bright sun - no shade. It was great having the camp store so close!

    Green Lakes State Park Campground

Green Lakes is a model state park

This is a great example of what a state park should be. It not only preserves a place of unique biological diversity and geologic interest, it is also well set up and well maintained to maximize low impact outdoor recreation and environmental education. A new state of the art regional environmental education center is being built now that will open in spring, as well as new handicapped access kayaking docks that complement Accessible trails and campsites throughout the park. This is a great destination for families, handicapped campers, and natural history enthusiasts. There are several campgrounds, one is large and open and meant for large RVs, others are drive-in forested tent sites or trailer sites with hookups, and several walkin sites. There is also a colony of rustic camper cabins. The campgrounds have brand new restroom facilities and playgrounds, and the main lake has a new beach house. The lake is a fascinating meromictic lake with clear calcium-rich waters that are not only pristine and beautiful to look at, but also great for swimming and snorkeling as the waters are crystal clear and very deep. There are hiking trails, paved bike trails, a nature preserve for bird watching at Round Lake, a golf course, and great kayaking or canoeing. It is also located right next door to the Erie Canal State Park for those who want to hike or bike the historic Erie Canal. Though you might expect a park like this to be in a remote location, it is actually just a short distance east of the suburbs of the Syracuse metro area, so it is an easy park to get to, plus staying there also provides easy access to stores for supplies, or access to local cultural activities or restaurants for those who want that. One of my favorite state parks in New York!

    Delta Lake State Park Campground

    Delta Lake State Park

A very nice, tidy campground located on a peninsula jutting into Delta Lake in Central NY. Our site was level and large enough for our 22ft Airstream, a 4-person tent, pop-up canopy, and 2 vehicles. A picnic table and fire ring were on the site. Our site had 30A electrical service. The surface of the site was dirt with some small stones…no grass. Trees surrounded the site on 3 sides, providing some privacy and a place to hang a hammock. We were able to carry our paddle boards to the lake, walking less than 200ft through some woods.

    Junius Ponds

    Great Campground

Well maintained and friendly staff. Clean facilities. Most sites can accommodate large rigs with full hookups. Reservations recommended especially during summer weekends. Well priced $42 per night for full hookups. Campground offered two free hours of WiFi which is week but is currently being updated. This campground offers a well maintained-non heated pool although costs $2 per person to use even for campers. Overall excellent campground

The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone

    Beautiful

Convenient to the highway with 24 hour shuttles to the casino 5 minutes away, yet quiet and beautifully maintained. Offers a pool, playground, hiking trail, fishing pond, paddleboat rentals, camp store, very clean bath houses throughout, maintained sites, fire rings at each site and organized in loops to offer wooded and full sun sites depending on what you are looking for. Visited at least once a year since 2016 with our most recent visit being June 2018. Hoping to visit again this season.

Guide to Manlius

RV camping near Manlius, New York offers options for travelers seeking both natural settings and convenient amenities. The region, located in Central New York's glacial landscape, receives approximately 40 inches of annual precipitation with summer temperatures averaging 70-80°F. Most campgrounds operate seasonally from May through mid-October due to the area's cold winters and significant snowfall.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Ontario Shores RV Park in Pulaski provides easy access to Lake Ontario, though recent flooding has affected beach conditions. "Lake Ontario a short walk away, the lake level flooding a few yrs ago ruined the sandy beach, but it's still a great view," notes Tim W., who spent four nights in a motorhome at Ontario Shores RV Park.

Golfing access: Streamside RV Park includes a 12-hole golf course surrounding the campground area. "There is a 12 hole golf coarse that surrounds the campground," explains a visitor. The campground primarily attracts adult golf enthusiasts as Paula G. observes, "Everyone here is a golfer and there are no children."

Hiking trails: The Chenango Canal trail provides historical walking opportunities near Butternut Hill RV Campground. "The campground is adjacent to the festival fields, lining a forest edge with expansive views of the surrounding valley... with access to some hiking and fishing spots in close proximity," shares Janet R., who visited during a local festival.

What campers like

Festival access: Butternut Hill hosts multiple special events throughout summer months. "The meadows and fields of Butternut Hill are the superb festival setting for several regional events, including several Antique shows, the Central New York Fiber Festival, a craft fair and a car show," reports a camper who appreciated the event proximity.

Stargazing conditions: The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone offers excellent night sky viewing opportunities. "Its so peaceful at night. My favorite time to come is August during the meteor showers," shares Jessica D. about her experiences at The Villages RV Park at Turning Stone.

Convenient shuttles: Casino access is facilitated through transportation services. "Convenient to the highway with 24 hour shuttles to the casino 5 minutes away, yet quiet and beautifully maintained," notes April L., highlighting the balance between accessibility and tranquility.

What you should know

Site spacing varies: Brennan Beach Campground offers waterfront camping with varying site privacy. "Sites are close together, but kind of what is expected at an RV resort," explains Becky, who visited with family. Conversely, Thomas R. noted his tent site had "zero privacy" with "about 10 yards to the next campsite."

Train noise considerations: Railroad tracks near some campgrounds can create periodic disturbances. One visitor to Treasure Isle RV Park appreciated that it's "nice and quite" with "sites a good size with water and electric on each site," while noting the park maintains facilities including "a nice bathhouse, playground, basketball court, Beach and walking trails."

Limited tent options: Most facilities cater primarily to RV campers with few dedicated tent sites. Woonton Family Farms offers a distinctive alternative with its rustic farm setting, as one international visitor described: "We had an excellent stay at the farm of the Woonton Family Farms with our RV, it was a cozy and beautiful campsite with personal attention of the owner."

Tips for camping with families

Consider recreational facilities: Look for campgrounds with specific kid-friendly amenities. The Villages RV Park provides "excellent playgrounds, fishing, an awesome pool," according to Michael O., making it suitable for family camping near Manlius.

Beach access planning: Brennan Beach Campground offers Lake Ontario shoreline with family-friendly facilities. "Spent 3 nights with our 2 sons and my husbands 2 granddaughters, all under age 12. Bathrooms/showers were clean... Very nice camp store, pools, playground, and restaurants. Spent time at the beach which is also very nice," shares Becky.

Pet policies: Check specific rules regarding dogs at beach areas and common spaces. One reviewer noted restrictions at certain lakefront areas, requiring pets to be kept away from swimming zones.

Tips from RVers

Site selection strategy: At The Villages RV Park, consider location preferences based on noise tolerance. "You'll want to stay towards the south / front of the park if this kind of thing bothers you," advises a motorhome owner regarding train noise.

Pricing variations: Camping costs range from $37.50 for full hookups at smaller facilities to $70 for premium locations. A visitor to Streamside noted, "We paid $37.50 for a one night stay. That is a good price for full hook up."

Seasonal occupancy patterns: Many Woonton Family Farms sites maintain permanent setups while owners travel. "There are a lot of seasonal campsites that have decks, nice furniture out at their spots. They all left Sunday afternoon yet the rigs stay there," observed one traveler passing through the area.
