Best Campgrounds near Chaumont, NY

Chaumont, New York serves as a gateway to numerous campgrounds along the scenic shores of Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River in the Thousand Islands region. Wellesley Island State Park Campground and Long Point State Park offer diverse accommodation options including tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin rentals. Most campgrounds in the area feature waterfront access with full-service amenities like electric hookups, sanitary dump stations, and shower facilities. The region includes several state parks and private campgrounds within a 15-mile radius, making it a convenient base for exploring the Thousand Islands area.

Camping season in the Chaumont area typically runs from May through mid-October, with most facilities closing after Columbus Day weekend. Many campgrounds require advance reservations, particularly for waterfront sites and summer weekends. The St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario significantly influence weather conditions, often creating windy conditions and quick-changing weather patterns. Roads are generally well-maintained and accessible with standard vehicles, though boat-in camping options are available at several locations. Cell service is reliable near developed areas but may be spotty in more remote sections. "Be sure to keep things put away and weighted down, and be ready to batten down the hatches as storms can come up quickly off the lake," noted one visitor to Long Point State Park.

Waterfront campsites consistently receive the highest ratings from visitors, particularly those with direct river or lake access. Cedar Point State Park Campground earns praise for its family-friendly amenities including a maintained beach area and playground. Several visitors mentioned the quality of bathroom facilities across the state parks, with many featuring recently renovated shower buildings. Burnham Point State Park, though smaller in size, draws positive reviews for its peaceful atmosphere and excellent river views. According to one camper, "The campground is deep in the woods with spacious camp sites. Very secluded." Private campgrounds like Merry Knoll provide a more personalized experience, with one visitor describing it as a "family-like experience" where "the owner and his wife are fully involved" in ensuring guest satisfaction.

Yogi Bears Jellystone Park Camp Resort at Mexico

    Unfortunate

Pros: river is awesome, wading, catching crayfish, cooling off. Staff were consistently friendly. Sites were flat, easy to level travel trailer. Plenty of kid activities, foam party, obstacle course, balloon launch, etc. Large store. Game room. Bathrooms (at least near the playground) were spacious, with toilet, sink, shower. Cons: signs/photo ops were crooked/loose/broken. Planted annual flowers were dead, overgrown with weeds. Miniature golf holes were falling apart. Bounce pad had a hole in it. The sand from around the edge was blowing from that hole into kids eyes, nose, mouth. Bathrooms were dirty; each has a 2-roll toilet paper dispenser; by early evening two stalls had zero TP left. Tent sites had used toilet paper along the tree line where others had used it as a bathroom. Fire pits were old tire rims, which worked, but unable to cook anything on it

    1000 Islands Campground

    Close to Alexandria Bay

We've camped there twice on extended weekends to visit the Bay and castles. Golf carts are welcome. The only issue was that people were not picking up after their dogs. We saw and had multiple dog piles in our campsite and on other parts of the campground.

The ice cream shop Gals is wonderful!! PJs Ratrace had incredible fish fries. Both places are very near the campground.

Green Pond - Bonaparte State Forest

Great little spot to get away

This is our go to area close to town but still just want to get away from it all. DEC is nice and stop and talk to the campers. There is a doc down the road for boats and fishing!

    Wellesley Island State Park Campground

    Family of 4 Tent Camping

We stayed at site Bluejay 3. Very spacious and private. We reserved the site 3 days prior and still found most waterfront campsites already reserved. Luckily, 2 waterfront sites were available at Bluejay 2 and 3 when we arrived, so we spent most of the time there fishing and canoeing. Bathrooms were a short walk down the road and mostly clean. Will certainly be back!

Streamside RV Park & Golf Course

    Great place!

This is a privately owned very nice campground! The owners take pride in their business and the grounds are meticulously kept. Everyone here is a golfer and there are no children.

    Kring Point State Park Campground

    Waterfront sites with amenities

I am tent camping and found my site (105) to have a couple of relatively level areas to choose to set up my tent on. This site is on Goose Bay, but the sites across the road are on the St Lawrence River just a few hundred feet away. Water nearby, brand new bathrooms with showers and two kitchen clean up stations are a short walk away. Every site has a fire ring with a grill and picnic table. Loons are calling, a mink scampered by on the flat rock shore 15’ away with a fish in its mouth. This place is quiet and peaceful. I will 100% return!

    Payne Lake Dispersed Site

    Beautiful Lake

Public access boat ramp with limited parking available on both sides. No amenities on-site. I'm getting two bars of Verizon signal with the help of a WeBoost. Beautiful views, peaceful and quiet.

    Hall Island State Forest

    Quiet View

I checked out primitive site on my own early in April it was cold snowing and raining. It didn’t take away from the campsite at all though. There were fire ring set up a view of the water and for enable body person just a short walk up the path. Where you drive in and park your car can also be used as a campsite but that’s right off the road. Speaking of you can’t hear the cars at night but you’re not too far from the road maybe half a mile. I like this place enough space to set up a few tents of kitchen whatever else you really wanted.
