Green Pond in Bonaparte State Forest offers free, quiet camping with pets allowed at no additional charge. Cranberry Lake Campground, Higley Flow State Park, and Birch's Lakeside Campground welcome pets at their tent, RV, and cabin sites. Leashed pets are permitted on trails and common areas, with most campgrounds requiring dogs to be under control at all times. The area's pet-friendly sites feature picnic tables, fire rings, and access to water activities. Campers report the DEC staff at Green Pond are friendly and check in with visitors regularly, creating a welcoming environment for those camping with their dogs.

Payne Lake Dispersed Site provides a serene, no-fee option for campers with pets who prefer basic, primitive camping without amenities. Hiking trails throughout Bonaparte State Forest and around Cranberry Lake offer excellent opportunities for dog exercise. Higley Flow State Park's wooded, private sites provide shade and protection for pets during summer months, with the Raquette River providing swimming opportunities for water-loving dogs. Visitors with pets should pack adequate supplies as pet stores are limited in this rural area. Wildlife encounters are possible, so keeping dogs leashed or under voice control is essential for their safety. The bathrooms and facilities at established campgrounds like Higley Flow are regularly cleaned and maintained, ensuring a comfortable stay for campers and their pets.

      Fort Drum Recreation Area

      A beautiful place to stay

With my family and pets in tow, we took a weekend and committed it to nature and ourselves. Remington is a Military campground, but for the several military families looking to disconnect a couple of miles from home this would be it.

They offer regular camping sites and RV sites, they also have a dog park for the little furry ones.

It is easy to get to and several forms of outdoor entertainment.. Remington is a b autiful well kept place and I could spend my summer there.

      Eighth Lake Campground

      Eighth Lake Campground, NY

Located in Inlet, New York this is a state park campground which makes it more affordable than the private parks nearby. The campground offers a boat launch for day us, hiking trails, fishing, swimming and canoeing. The park offers showers, bathrooms and a dump station. The sites are surrounded by beautiful trees which allows privacy for all guests. The service is spotty, but it’s stronger in nearby Inlet, NY.

      Wellesley Island State Park Campground

crowded. fine if you're spending your days on the water

We came to this campground after a week in Algonquin Provincial park in Canada and the contrast couldn't have been greater. Up north we stayed on a large, shady site in a radio free loop and everyone had canoes. In New York we had a cramped, open site and everyone seemed to have a motorboat on a trailer. Our neighbors across the road set up a movie screen . The overall feel was NOT "getting away from it all".
The facilities are good and there's a nice beach and well stocked General store, also a big boat ramp facility with some docks.
We chose this location because we were attending the Antique Boat Show in Clayton, 13 miles away, and this was the closest available. It suited us just fine for that.
Keep your stuff secure, there are brazen raccoons.

      Robert Moses State Park Campground

Robert Moses in 1,000 Islands near Canada

Lovely State Park in the 1,000 Islands where water activities are the main attraction. Make sure to check out the island too! The park spans the island and a little snaking river-like bay. Really pretty to explore on boat. Easy and very pretty trails on site, walk along the shore too. Decent wildlife and great birding. Feels very isolated though easy to get to. Bring your passport, you can see Canada from some of the picnic grounds. Incredible sunsets!!!

Quality State Park facilities, clean. Camping ranges from tents in shady woods to cabins. Some sites are pretty private, even the ones that aren't are quiet.

Note: Robert Moses apparently did a lot in New York State. This park is near Canada! There is also a Robert Moses beach on Long Island near NYC (Fire Island National Seashore) and Robert Moses parkway near Niagara Falls. These are all 8+ hours from each other! Be careful with your mapping apps and in getting advice for travel.

      Higley Flow State Park Campground

Favorite place to camp in NY

Whether it's playing in the water or in the playground this place is awesome to bring your children. The showers and restrooms were kept very clean and The Pavilions were wonderful places to have a family picnic. The campsites are also well maintained and it was very simple to just back up a little mobile home into the camping spot the picturesque Landscapes made the sunsets absolutely beautiful. Out of all of the places that I have been in New York this is by far one of my favorite places to go

      Tioga Point Campground

      Boat-in only

You can only reach this campground by boat. The campground is very secluded and there are lean-to style campsites. You don't have to bring a tent unless you want to. This definitely saves some space in your boat. Pets are allowed! And since there usually aren't many people here, it's a great place to bring your dog for a long range game of frisbee or a good day of swimming.

      Golden Beach Campground

Great location, careful with your site selection.

My friend is a local and recommended this campground for the sunsets. The rain made that difficult to confirm, but we loved the place. It’s the standard weird-ass New York thing where you have a site and you can park wherever the hell you want within it (so foreign to me), but you should spend some time with the map. Site 158 is probably the dopest (we were next door in 159), but there are some others near the lake that would be sweet. The further back from the lake, the more of a camping-in-the-deep-woods vibe. Looks like some folks leave a camper here all summer (can’t imagine spending that much, but it’s probably cheaper than a lake house) and many bring boats. I think if you’ve got a SUP, canoe or kayak, you’re gonna dig this campground in specific and the area in general.

    Guide to Edwards

Bonaparte State Forest has several dog-friendly campgrounds and dispersed sites located 9 miles north of Edwards, New York in the western Adirondack foothills. The area sits at approximately 1,300 feet elevation with mixed hardwood forests and small lakes. Winter temperatures often drop below zero while summer daytime averages reach the mid-70s with cool evenings in the 50s.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Cranberry Lake offers excellent bass and pike fishing with both shoreline and boat access. "Camped for three nights. LOVED this place. The bathrooms are clean and there is plenty of hot water!" notes Pat T. at Cranberry Lake Campground.

Waterfront swimming: Access the Raquette River from Higley Flow State Park for swimming in warmer summer waters. Sandy T. reports, "It's convenient for the locals nearby to group camp there so it can be a little busy and loud during the day if you don't get a more private site which there are plenty of."

Winter recreation: Cross-country skiing trails are maintained at Higley Flow during snow season. "I also cross country ski in the winter and the trails are fabulous!" mentions Jennifer I., highlighting year-round recreational options at Higley Flow State Park Campground.

    What campers like

Quiet environment: Many campgrounds in the area provide peaceful settings away from crowds. At Payne Lake Dispersed Site, Mona M. notes, "Beautiful views, peaceful and quiet. Public access boat ramp with limited parking available on both sides."

Dark skies for stargazing: The remote location offers excellent night sky viewing. "Star gazing is FANTASTIC!" according to Paul B. at Birch's Lakeside Campground and Marina, who adds, "This place has it all, especially being as remote as it is."

On-site conveniences: Some established campgrounds provide unexpected amenities despite rural settings. A reviewer at Birch's notes, "This place even has WiFi!!!" while another mentions their "quaint general store for supplies and fuel."

    What you should know

Limited cell service: Mobile coverage is spotty throughout the region. Mona M. reports, "I'm getting two bars of Verizon signal with the help of a WeBoost" at Payne Lake Dispersed Site.

Military training noise: Proximity to Fort Drum means occasional training sounds. Sam T. mentions at Green Pond, "Not very well know and really quite however the training range can be a little loud at times."

Variable water levels: Raquette River water levels fluctuate due to dam operations. Sandy T. explains, "Since this river has many dams and is used for hydro power the water level can go up and down 2-3 feet from one day to the next."

Limited supplies: Grocery options are minimal in small towns. Blake S. notes the importance of bringing essentials: "Birches had everything we wanted...all the necessities," but comprehensive shopping requires advance planning.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground options: Several campgrounds include play areas for children. At Eel Weir State Park Campground, Mary D. mentions "A new playground in 2017" making it suitable for families with young children.

Beach access: Kid-friendly swimming areas provide safer water entry points. Christina B. says Kring Point has "a little beach area and great rock cliffs to jump off and swim!"

Wildlife viewing: Opportunities to spot local animals enhance family trips. Aaron P. shares that his "favorite thing is the family of owls that inhabit the trees that you see every night" at Eel Weir.

Site selection for privacy: Request wooded sites for better separation between neighbors. "We stayed at site Bluejay 3. Very spacious and private," notes Erin B. at Wellesley Island State Park Campground, adding that waterfront sites book quickly.

    Tips from RVers

Site levelness: RV campers should check site grading before booking. Rebecca D. notes at Cranberry Lake, "Our site was on the uphill slope so we had some road noise due to that."

Electric hookup availability: Not all loops offer power connections. According to Sheri C., Higley Flow has "3 loops with electric" and she recommends checking availability: "While driving there I took a peak online to find that they had one site that had come available with electric. We immediately called and switched our site."

Advance reservations: Popular RV sites book early in peak season. Alycia M. advises, "We book early so we can get a water front site" at dog-friendly Jacques Cartier State Park Campground.
