Fort Drum Recreation Area provides a dedicated dog park for pets to exercise off-leash while camping near Carthage, New York. Pets are welcome at multiple established campgrounds in the region, including Natural Bridge/Watertown KOA, Wellesley Island State Park, and Whetstone Gulf State Park. Most sites require pets to be leashed when outside designated exercise areas, with proof of rabies vaccination needed at state parks. Accommodations range from tent sites to full-hookup RV spots and pet-friendly cabins. Green Pond in Bonaparte State Forest offers a more rustic camping experience for those seeking dispersed camping with dogs. The 1000 Islands region offers numerous water-based activities where dogs can swim, with Lake Ontario access available at several campgrounds including Swan Bay Resort and Association Island. Leash enforcement varies between campgrounds, with some visitors noting occasional off-leash dogs at certain locations. Seasonal considerations affect pet comfort, as the camping season typically runs May through October. The region's extensive trail systems provide excellent opportunities for dog walking, though wildlife encounters require vigilance. Fort Drum Recreation Area

      A beautiful place to stay

With my family and pets in tow, we took a weekend and committed it to nature and ourselves. Remington is a Military campground, but for the several military families looking to disconnect a couple of miles from home this would be it.

They offer regular camping sites and RV sites, they also have a dog park for the little furry ones.

It is easy to get to and several forms of outdoor entertainment.. Remington is a b autiful well kept place and I could spend my summer there.

      Eighth Lake Campground

      Eighth Lake Campground, NY

Located in Inlet, New York this is a state park campground which makes it more affordable than the private parks nearby. The campground offers a boat launch for day us, hiking trails, fishing, swimming and canoeing. The park offers showers, bathrooms and a dump station. The sites are surrounded by beautiful trees which allows privacy for all guests. The service is spotty, but it’s stronger in nearby Inlet, NY.

      Delta Lake State Park Campground

      Delta Lake State Park

Delta Lake State Park sits at the foothills of the Adirondack Park, just outside Rome, New York. Pretty and well-kempt, Delta Lake is a nice option for those looking to stay close to home and within proximity to civilization. You can enjoy the great outdoors, while only being a few miles away from a restaurant or grocery store.

The campground isn‘t the best I’ve experienced, a bit on the crowded side-similar to a woodsy suburb- but this could have been distinctive to Loop A where I stayed. I stayed in site 35 and was intermixed with all the campers and RV’s, so it got a bit noisy. Not that restful, secluded experience I typically go for, but I should have planned further in advance.

However, what the park lacked in terms of its campground, it totally made up for in its beach, swimming and picnic areas! This place was awesome for hosting a birthday party for my niece and relaxing at the beach/ day facilities. They have plenty of picnic tables, charcoal grills, a huge beach and locker rooms. This is really a great place to spend a day with your family!

      Southwick Beach State Park Campground

Great part with tons of beach

There is TONS of beach to explore at this little State Park in New York. I used to visit here as a kid years ago because my grandparents owned a cottage on the lake. Since they sold it, visiting Southwick is the next best thing. Lake Ontario is an amazing lake to be on and the water is pretty warm in the summer time. the waves don't get too big, so it is very safe for kids. Southwick itself has great camping spots right next to the beach. It is a little pricey if you only want to visit for the day, $8, but you can get a tent spot for $18 which is comparable to other state parks. Showers are available, and there are some short trails that are good for running or probably cross country skiing in the winter. There is also a sizable playground near the beach that is great for the kids.

      Wellesley Island State Park Campground

crowded. fine if you're spending your days on the water

We came to this campground after a week in Algonquin Provincial park in Canada and the contrast couldn't have been greater. Up north we stayed on a large, shady site in a radio free loop and everyone had canoes. In New York we had a cramped, open site and everyone seemed to have a motorboat on a trailer. Our neighbors across the road set up a movie screen . The overall feel was NOT "getting away from it all".
The facilities are good and there's a nice beach and well stocked General store, also a big boat ramp facility with some docks.
We chose this location because we were attending the Antique Boat Show in Clayton, 13 miles away, and this was the closest available. It suited us just fine for that.
Keep your stuff secure, there are brazen raccoons.

Yogi Bears Jellystone Park Camp Resort at Mexico

      Great Salmon fishing....Mexico NY

This is our 4th experience at a Jellystone. The campground was clean and staff was super nice. Organized the Halloween activities nicely. Yogi and the characters were very involved. For the fisherman, it's located on Salmon River and appears to have quite a lot of large salmon this time of year. I was shocked at the size of the fish that were being cleaned. My husband believes that area of the river was a private sector for the campground. Smaller campground than others I have been too but made it nice for kids to rides bikes safely since there weren't golf carts located at this campground. What I didn't enjoy as much. 1) The sites were muddy, especially when it had recently rained. Luckily we came after it rained and it had dried out some. 2) the dog park was a walking area, not a fenced in yard for them to let some of their energy out 3) No sewer hookups available but does had a dump station on your way out.

      Higley Flow State Park Campground

Favorite place to camp in NY

Whether it's playing in the water or in the playground this place is awesome to bring your children. The showers and restrooms were kept very clean and The Pavilions were wonderful places to have a family picnic. The campsites are also well maintained and it was very simple to just back up a little mobile home into the camping spot the picturesque Landscapes made the sunsets absolutely beautiful. Out of all of the places that I have been in New York this is by far one of my favorite places to go

    Guide to Carthage

The Carthage area of New York lies in Jefferson County with elevations ranging between 400-700 feet above sea level. The region experiences four distinct seasons with warm summers and cold, snowy winters. Most camping options are clustered around the Black River or nearby waterways, providing access to fishing, hiking, and water recreation during the May-October camping season.

    What to do

Hiking at Whetstone Gulf: The gorge hiking trail offers mid-level difficulty terrain with unique views. "What a wonderful hike. Mid level rigor but the view of the gorge from the top are truly breath taking!!" notes Matt N. at Whetstone Gulf State Park Campground.

Fishing on the St. Lawrence: The 1000 Islands region provides excellent fishing opportunities, particularly for perch. At Wellesley Island State Park Campground, camper John L. reports "You're around some of the best fishing in the country" and suggests catching perch for a camp cookout.

Boat rentals: Several campgrounds offer watercraft access. At Sun Outdoors Association Island, Tracey G. notes "Water sport potential was huge if you have your own watercraft (boats, jet ski, kayaking, etc). Many state parks and historical areas as well. Highly recommend a boat tour of the St. Lawrence River!"

Visiting historic sites: The region contains noteworthy landmarks within day-trip distance. "You're 10 min from Alexandria Bay. Boldt castle, singer castle, you can go on river cruises and view these beautiful islands and homes on them. Watch the cargo ships cruise the channel," according to John L.'s experience at Wellesley Island.

    What campers like

Waterfront views: Many campsites offer premium waterfront locations. At Swan Bay Resort - The 1000 Islands Premier RV Park & Marina, Nancy W. observes "Our site (#38) was a Passport America site so we got a great nightly rate of $42 which is half of the regular nightly rate. Our site was a 'standard site' near the pool, boat launch, activities, and Tiki Bar."

Secluded camping options: For those seeking privacy, Green Pond offers quieter alternatives. Sam T. at Green Pond - Bonaparte State Forest shares "This is my second time camping at this location and I've enjoyed it so much. Not very well know and really quite however the training range can be a little loud at times."

Wildlife viewing: The region supports diverse bird and animal populations. At Sun Outdoors Association Island, Matt S. notes "Surrounded by Lake Ontario, it's a secluded and idyllic setting for a RV campground." Other campers report seeing migrating birds and night sky viewing opportunities with minimal light pollution.

Swimming areas: Designated swimming locations provide summer recreation. "Cute swimming hole, although the water was brisk, as it's a dammed steam. Did not slow the kids down," reports Matt N. about Whetstone Gulf State Park's swimming area.

    What you should know

Weather considerations: The region experiences variable conditions, particularly wind near larger bodies of water. Nancy W. cautions at Swan Bay Resort: "Our neighbor (who has camped here seasonally for the last four years) mentioned that he lost three awnings to the wind. So, don't leave your awning out when you leave your camper and beware of winds if you want to be on the water."

Reservation timing: Popular campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. At Wellesley Island State Park, Erin B. suggests planning ahead: "We stayed at site Bluejay 3. Very spacious and private. We reserved the site 3 days prior and still found most waterfront campsites already reserved."

Site selection strategy: Campground layouts vary significantly. For Natural Bridge/Watertown KOA, Liz M. notes "The sites are small, but there are mature trees between them & woodsy areas around the campsites."

Military training noise: Campsites near Fort Drum may experience training-related sounds. Sam T. mentions at Green Pond: "Not very well know and really quite however the training range can be a little loud at times."

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature play equipment for children. Elizabeth B. describes Soft Maple Campground as "Small and completely gorgeous! Beach, wooded sites, great for everyone... The beach is lovely and clean. There's boat access for canoes and kayaks as this is part of the Beaver River route."

Pet friendly camping near Carthage, New York: For those camping with dogs, Payne Lake Dispersed Site maintains minimal restrictions. Mona M. at Payne Lake Dispersed Site reports "Public access boat ramp with limited parking available on both sides. No amenities on-site. Beautiful views, peaceful and quiet."

Multi-generational activities: Look for campgrounds offering diverse recreation options. At Wellesley Island, John L. notes "NYS may get tons of flack for its politics and politicians. However they're doing it all correct in their state parks. This park is amazing... Tons of playgrounds and swimming."

Budget-friendly options: Costs vary significantly between campgrounds. Elizabeth B. mentions that Soft Maple has "Only about a dozen sites or so, first come first serve. Level sites for RVs or tent or hammock camping."

    Tips from RVers

Campsite surfaces: RV parking areas range from gravel to concrete. Matt S. describes Swan Bay Resort: "Our waterfront pull-IN site was a level concrete pad and gravel with FHU and everything worked great."

Hookup variability: Service connections differ between parks. Rachel P. notes about Whetstone Gulf State Park: "The grounds do have multiple trails, including a gorge trail, which perhaps may offer some redeeming qualities... There is space for RVs and a dump station but the sites do not have power or hookups."

RV size limitations: Not all campgrounds accommodate larger vehicles. Donna C. describes Sun Outdoors Association Island: "Our site was a pull in and we faced a western view of Lake Ontario. We were treated to gorgeous sunsets and minimal light pollution at night. The water is clear and cool. Our site was full hookup and gravel based."

Local supply access: Several campgrounds offer convenient shopping. Nancy W. notes about Swan Bay: "Within walking distance is a Price Chopper Grocery, Dollar General, gas station, and wine and liquor store."
