Camping near Bloomfield, New York offers varied terrain at elevations between 700-2,000 feet throughout the Finger Lakes region. The area's microclimate creates longer camping seasons than surrounding regions, with fall temperatures typically 5-10°F warmer than nearby areas. Many sites feature hardwood forest cover providing natural shade during summer months when daytime temperatures average 78-85°F.
What to do
Hiking networks: 12+ miles of connected trails available at Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill where visitors can access the Finger Lakes Trail system. "Numerous pavilions that are wonderful for parties or weddings. Stunning overlook that is breathtaking (also great for weddings). Hiking, bike trails, fishing pond, playground, open fields for sports, much more," notes Sarah C.
Military history exploration: free museum access at Sampson State Park Campground provides educational opportunities between camping activities. "There is a museum, boat launch, pavilions, and ice cream shop on the camp ground. The bathrooms are great with showers and each camp spot has plenty of distance away from the next one," explains Kate W., adding that "maintenance crew starts around 7."
Natural swimming areas: three dedicated spots for water recreation across the regional parks. At Stony Brook State Park, one visitor shared, "My favorite part about this park has to be their natural pool. It's beautiful and so refreshing. Great hikes with bunches of little waterfalls and small pools for swimming."
What campers like
Privacy without isolation: strategically positioned sites at Flint Creek Campgrounds provide quiet spaces while maintaining access to amenities. One reviewer found "an easy back in site with full hookups (B10) backed against a row of trees and a field that provided much entertainment of squirrels and birds."
Clean facilities: regularly maintained bathrooms with hot water availability across most area campgrounds. At Webster Park, "bathrooms and showers were clean. Wasn't too far from a park along Ontario. Overall a great stay!" according to Joseph W., who made a last-minute reservation.
Yurt camping options: climate-controlled structures available May through October at multiple parks. A recent visitor to Letchworth State Park Campground noted, "There are also nice cabins to rent scattered around the park. Nice central playground and bathroom/shower house. There is hiking in the park, lots of nice woods, big field for playing games/sports."
What you should know
Seasonal timing: mid-May through mid-October represents optimal camping periods, with most facilities closing after Halloween. "This park is very clean, good size sites. Has a very nice military museum," notes Carrie N. about Sampson State Park.
Reservation requirements: 2-14 day advance booking recommended for weekend stays during peak summer months. Webster Park campsites "are wooded and private. Very quiet and peaceful. Clean and well maintained... will definitely visit again," according to Amanda M.
Terrain conditions: variable ground surfaces require preparation for both tenting and RVs. At Stony Brook State Park Campground, "Most of the camp areas washed out from rain with water running through them," notes one camper who experienced weather challenges during their stay.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: multiple age-appropriate play areas available within walking distance from campsites. "Our first KOA stop, so can't compare to other KOAs, but this place has a good number of family activities and events. Our 3 and 5 year olds really enjoyed the jump pad and woods obstacles," shares Greg S.
Wildlife viewing opportunities: early morning animal sightings common at several campgrounds in the region. Jenise P. reports, "I'm a birder and my tent site here is next to a little grove of trees where I counted 12 species of birds this morning."
Family-friendly yurt camping: Bloomfield area yurts accommodate 4-6 people with electricity included. "We spent father's day weekend at the KOA. Our kids rented cabins and some used tents and others came for the day," shares Rich L., adding that there's "swimming, golf, bike and paddle boat rentals."
Tips from RVers
Electric hookup locations: shared power boxes require planning at Sampson State Park Campground. According to Amanda K., "Electric service boxes are shared in-between sites. This could pose an issue if your power cord is not long enough. There is only source for water fill up."
Leveling requirements: uneven terrain at many sites requires equipment. Jonathan G. advises to "make sure to bring plenty of leveling blocks as some sites are far from level" when camping in the area.
Road navigation challenges: narrow access roads require careful driving for larger rigs. At Junius Ponds, one camper found "the roads are narrow and hilly, but we pull a 36' 5th wheel (mid-profile) and we had no issues with branches. They had a oversized, long pull through available (site 88) that made entering and exiting the site nice and easy."
