    Willow Bay Recreation Area

    Quiet nights, Easy days

Willow bay campground is run by the National Forest Service. The reservable lots are wide and numerous for a out of the way sight. The campground services tent sites, RV sites as well as small cabins with electricity. There is a central bathhouse near the oak loop. Closer to the boat ramp sites- most of which are tent ready, there are vault toilets. These sites are less than a mile from the North Country Trail. Other, smaller trails are here as well. The New York State lone is less than five miles away- providing access to Allegheny State Park. The closest town of note is Bradford, which is about 18 miles away. It has all you need to get your necessities. The cabins were small- one twin bed and a set of single bunks. You need to bring your own sheets. There is a small heater imbedded in the wall. It keeps things from getting too cold, as it was when I was there. Fire ring and picnic table provided. Charcoal grill as well. The only problem I had was with the wildlife. A mouse or something kep crawling in the space between the roof and ceiling. There is no cel service here, and you shouldn’t need it either. Places to visit are too numerous to mention, but I will give a shout out to the zippo case museum, absolutely a must.

Quaker Area — Allegany State Park State Park

This is a great vacation area.....spend a week!

Did you know this is NY's largest state campground? We stopped here on a rainy night, but what we saw convinced me we need to return. I know this campground is a vacation destination for families in western NY.

Cain Hollow is in the Quaker Run area which includes Quaker Lake. There is another campground in the Red House Area, and there are also lots of cabins. This is definitely a 4 seasons park - hiking, biking, swimming, fishing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing....

I was able to take photos of a few sites the next morning. You can see that sites are private and you're definitely in the woods. There are food storage boxes at all campsites because you're in bear country.

    Evangola State Park Campground

    Great campground

We stayed here three nights to ride out a heat wave and really liked it. Sites are electric only, with a dump station available at the entrance and one in the campground loop. There are potable water spigots throughout the campground, where you awkwardly pull over to the side of the road and fill your tank. Sites are pretty much wide open, with zero separation between you and your neighbor. Most are out in direct sun but the ones along the edge have some tree cover and shade.

There are yurts here as well, and a playground, and a huge disc golf course. You can walk to the beach from the campground (dogs aren’t allowed on the beach). The nature center is right in the campground, by the basketball and tennis courts.

Showers were dirty and buggy, but they’re free and you can actually choose your own water temperature. NY State campgrounds require proof of rabies vaccinations for your dogs.

Good cell reception for Verizon, ATT wasn’t great but the cell booster helped. Trash bins, but no recycling. Beautiful sunset on the lake.

Four Mile Creek State Park Campground

    Field Camping

It's not all bad! It took a while to find our site in the dark as site markers are small. The sites are decent size, the bathrooms are clean but spiders will hang out. Showers are hot. Sites are available with electric and there is an RV dump station if you have one. There are a lot of RVs at this campground, a large playground, and a field with soccer goals (no net). Niagara Falls is 15 or so miles away, and Buffalo NY is a short drive. The bathroom building has an outdoor sink with heated water, and this is also where the trash bins are.  Firewood is available in front of many nearby homes (a couple of miles, max,and $4-5 a bundle). The fire pits are either low or leaning, so we found a camp stove to be essential. It can get quite windy, we saw a tent buckle and our stakes were pulled up from the wind. It can get loud at night and it doesn't seem as if quiet hours are enforced. I'd stay again but only if a more private campground was unavailable.

    HTR Niagara Campground

Covid update on one of my favorites

Once again, the Branches of Niagara comes through stunningly. Even in the midst of the lockdowns and augmented restrictions, TBON went above and beyond to be sure we had the safest and most enjoyable time we could during our stay.

Bathrooms, as usual, were pristine, with regular visits from the staff to disinfect and make sure campers were satisfied. This is a campground of several lakeside cabins and mostly RVs, so they were also seldom in use, making them even more accommodating for us during this time of distancing. They notified us in advance that they were still open and what was functional under the strict and ever changing NY requirements. Note: as of Summer 2020, masks were required to enter the store and check in areas, but not required elsewhere. Kids activities were augmented to allow for distancing and remain completely outdoors.

We got site 10, which was excellent both for proximity to everything, hookups, privacy, space and views. This particular site had ample, mowed and cleared room behind the spacious site as well where you can set up your hammocks and relax in the wooded shade. Directly in front of the site is a clearing which allows a view to the pool and pond-side of the campground. It was quiet and clean.

Stef is always friendly, and the camp store rents a number of items to add to the fun - paddle boats, kayaks, 4 seater bike surreys, peddle carts, and other fun things. Zip lines were both still open. Activities were updated to reflect safety during C-19.

Beautiful, peaceful, spacious campground with so many hidden gems. The lake is pretty and the campground’s access from the Grand Island side of Buffalo to Niagara Falls is very convenient, yet away from the loud commotion and traffic. We highly recommend!

    Evangola State Park Campground

    Nice but not great

The facilities in the campground are very good (relatively new bath house with nice clean showers). The campsites are a good size although most have no natural shade or privacy. My only real complaint is that this seemed like a "party park" with music playing and people being loud after quiet hours. In addition, the beach area had a lot of trash laying around.

    Willow Bay Recreation Area

    Willow Bay

The camp grounds were great. Staff was very helpful and nice. Camp sites were decently spaced out. Fire wood was priced fairly well but they don’t usually deliver($).and they sell worms at the gate along with ice.

The RVs had their own loop and tents and cabins were on the water down a wooded trail.

The reason this was 4/5 is because you have to unload the car then walk everything to the camp. There is no drive up access for tent camping. A wagon is highly encouraged

Additionally, vault toilets on the tent side and plumbing and showers on the RV side. Bathrooms were very clean and didn’t smell, the showers were hot.

I saw some boats anchored at sites which I thought was nice. I also got to peek into a cabin and it was pretty cozy.

    Camp Seneca

    Quiet and secluded

We came I to the area on a Monday and this camp was completely empty. We picked the biggest site next to the creek. The tree canopy over our site was dense enough that w3 did not get very wet when it rains.

This campground had several designated sites and most have a fire ring and picnic table.

There was a porti-poty on site that had plenty of paper was pretty clean.

We had a few hikers come through and one other camper that chose not to stay.

Guide to Angola

Primitive camping sites around Angola provide options for rustic outdoor experiences throughout western New York's forest lands. Dispersed camping at North Harmony State Forest requires self-sufficiency with no services beyond fire pits at designated sites. Campers should prepare for varied terrain including both wooded areas and lakeside settings across several state forests and established campgrounds. Most tent camping in the Angola region operates seasonally, typically closing by late October due to harsh winter conditions.

What to do

Explore wildlife viewing trails: Compass Campgrounds features numerous hiking paths where visitors can observe local wildlife directly from their campsites. According to reviewer Jake C., "Compass Campgrounds is more than a place to stay, they also have tons of trails so you can explore the area and search for local wildlife."

Winter outdoor activities: Allegany State Park cabin campers can access year-round recreation opportunities. Harry H. noted that the park offers "hiking, snowshoeing, XC skiing, leaf peeping, etc." The cabins remain open throughout winter when many tent campgrounds close.

Thunder Rocks exploration: A distinctive geological formation provides climbing and exploration opportunities. Emily S. recommends: "Do not miss the thunder rocks, they're really, really enjoyable," making this a standout activity for families visiting the Allegany area.

What campers like

Clean facilities with food options: Dream Lake Campground maintains well-kept amenities and convenient food services. Nick O. appreciated the "clean facilities" and noted "the snack house food is great, if you don't feel like cooking they offer a nice menu almost anyone would love."

Rustic yet modern cabins: The Bova Cottages at Allegany State Park balance wilderness experience with comfortable accommodations. Harry H. describes them as cabins that "feel rustic but are new (2014?) and modern. Had everything we needed for a weekend with extended family, almost like a hotel in what they supply."

Mountain biking access: Firefly Acres provides direct trail access for cycling enthusiasts. Jake C. notes it's "a great spot to setup camp with tons of activities nearby including trails for hiking & mountain biking."

What you should know

Seasonal trail conditions: Storm damage can affect hiking accessibility in certain seasons. At Allegany State Park, Danielle S. reported: "After the last bad winter storm we had (2/2018) trees fell all over the park, including on my favorite hiking trails. Hemlock Hollow and Conservation Trails were grueling hikes this week, with a downed tree or 3 every 20 yards or so."

Dispersed camping regulations: North Harmony State Forest has unclear overnight camping policies. Denise D. warns: "there are posted signs that say Day Use Only. It was quiet and dark," suggesting campers should verify current regulations before setting up at dispersed sites.

Site cleanliness issues: Some primitive sites require inspection before setup. Rose S. found at North Harmony State Forest that "the previous people who stayed at our site were messy and left litter, but it served its purpose as a free place to sleep along a longer trip."

Tips for camping with families

Book cabins for larger groups: Family gatherings work well at the cottage accommodations. Emily S. reports from her experience at Allegany: "Our family of 6 fit comfortably in one cabin when we were all small. There's beaches, guided nature trails, biking, hiking."

Weekend activity programming: Hidden Valley Camping Area offers organized events for children. Shannon S. notes it's "a Jellystone campground" which typically features family-oriented weekend activities and themed events throughout the camping season.

Multiple recreation options: The best tent camping near Angola, New York includes sites with diverse activity choices. At Dream Lake Campground, Robyn M. confirms it's "very family friendly lots of activities been going here 6 years now and never have had a bad time."

Tips from RVers

Food storage requirements: Streamside Eriegrove and surrounding camping areas require proper food management. Kate W. cautions: "Do not leave food out. The bears are very ambitious," making secure storage essential for both tent and RV campers.

Limited hookup options: Many campgrounds near Angola offer only partial hookups or 30-amp service. Hidden Valley Camping Area provides electric hookups and water connections but lacks sewer hookups at most sites, requiring use of the central dump station.

Seasonal operation dates: Most Angola area campgrounds close by late October. Dream Lake Campground operates strictly from May 1 to October 25, while Hidden Valley Camping Area runs from April 15 to October 15, giving RVers a slightly extended shoulder season.
