Several campgrounds near Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico offer cabin accommodations with varying amenities and comfort levels. Chama River RV Park & Cooper's El Vado Ranch provides cabins with electricity and basic furnishings, while Little Creel in Chama features small cottages along a creek. According to one visitor, "They provide full hookups, spaces for tent camping, and some small cottages. The laundry is clean and reasonably priced." Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu maintains year-round cabin rentals with access to shared bathhouse facilities. Most cabins include picnic tables outside, and many feature fire rings for evening campfires. Twin Rivers RV Park & Campground offers cabin options with reasonable prices and proximity to shower facilities.

Elwood Cabin, though slightly farther away, represents the more primitive option with a visitor noting it has "2 bunk beds, two burner propane stove, a few propane lights, an outhouse and plenty of firewood for the fireplace." Most properties are pet-friendly, though policies vary by location. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during summer months when the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad draws visitors to the area. The Last Resort, located between Chama and Pagosa Springs, features "a small cabin with a queen bed and electricity" according to one reviewer. Stone House Lodge in Los Ojos provides cabin rentals with electric hookups and on-site amenities like showers and toilets.

Cabin guests should bring their own bedding, towels, and food supplies in most cases. Basic kitchenware may be provided at some locations, but visitors should confirm what's available before arrival. While some cabins include propane stoves or fireplaces, others have minimal cooking facilities. Small markets are available at several campgrounds including Little Creel and Twin Rivers, offering essentials like ice, firewood, and basic groceries. For more extensive shopping, Chama provides additional options. Cell service can be limited at many cabin locations, though some offer Wi-Fi access. One visitor to Elwood Cabin appreciated this isolation, noting: "There is no reception of any type... HEAVEN!!! The only thing you need is bedding, food, water and some reading materials."

The Last Resort RV Park & Campground

Beautiful views and a relaxing environment.

The Last Resort is a lovely RV Park and campground on the Blanco River off Highway 84 between Chama, New Mexico and Pagosa Springs, Colorado. There are full RV hook ups in the loop and partial hook up by the river. The Bunk House is a small cabin with a queen bed and electricity. Many great tent camping sites. There is a nice Bathhouse with a full kitchen, bathrooms with showers and a coin operated washer/dryer. They are open year round, free wifi and pets welcome. There is a small store with ice, sodas, snacks, fishing tackle, RV supplies, and toiletries.

This is our 3rd summer at the Last Resort. It's a very laid back place with 2 playgrounds and plenty of activities for kids - horse shoes, volleyball, tether ball, etc. They have a nice 4th of July celebration, potluck dinners and camp fires. There are often horses (and a goat) on the property and plenty of space to take a nice walk. This year, we saw a lot of Canada geese and there are also chickens and ducks. We really love watching the many hummingbirds and hanging out by the river. Lots of campers like to fish or float down the river on inner tubes.

Well maintained, beautiful and friendly hosts make for a wonderful place to stay.

    Little Creel

    Larger RV Park

This is a larger RV Park. They provide full hookups, spaces for tent camping, and some small cottages. I have not used their restrooms, but the laundry is clean and reasonably priced. Many of the spaces are pretty close together, but we’ve had worse! They have nice picnic tables and fire pits. There is a creek that runs behind the park and the spaces along this creek cost more. We stayed in Space 20; which is supposed to have the creek behind it (so we paid more), but there’s a bunch of electrical boxes there so you can’t see it or access it and there’s also a huge manhole sticking up in our space! So don’t take Space 20 unless you are desperate! That is the reason for my 4 rating. The grass is sparse, but there are big grassy areas throughout the park. Some of the spaces have the shade of large trees. I would stay here again, but would avoid #20.

    Ponderosa Campground

    The River runs through it

The website listed for this campground is correct Ponderosa campground Antonito, CO.

    Phone 719.376.5857

This is a very relaxing place to stay and it seems like most of the people there have been there many times before. The drive in is easy on Route 17 and does not require a vehicle with high ground clearance. They do allow campfires, they have clean bathrooms and a shower house. I stayed in a backpacking tent after driving all day arriving on a Friday at about 4:00 PM. The campground is set-up for small campers and has some cabins for rent too. The bathrooms with showers are clean and comfortable. The sites have fire rings with grates and picnic tables. The owner manager is great, providing quality fishing advice, conversation and even a free cup of coffee in the morning. Hiking on the CDT is near the campground and fishing is right in the campground. The steam train is right up the pass and I happened to be there the night before opening day catching a photo when I drove over the pass to Chama New Mexico. The Cumbres and Toltec Train traveling between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico. This is a very nice drive and Chama is a cool place to visit, it is a trail town on the CDT.

I will visit this campground again for sure.

    Riana - Abiquiu Lake

    Great views, great hosts

Camped 2 nights at site #38 on the Puerco Loop. Reserved thru rec.gov while at the site. Wonderful campground hosts. Site was not quite level for our campervan, but close enough. Good views of lake & surrounding area from site. Vault toilet & drinking water a short walk away. Juniper provided minimal privacy. Site has lantern poll, fire ring, trash can & table. No hookups at this site. $6/night with senior pass. Restroom/shower house within walking distance. Facilities & vault toilets were very clean. Hiking trail in campground. AT&T & T-Mobile service. Overall, quiet & peaceful stay.

    Ponderosa Campground

    Secluded Campsite.

This campsite is only accessible via boat. There are two fire pits. The land is flat compared to other sites at the Reservoir. Most of the ground is covered with sand. The mosquitoes were not too terrible even though we were right by the water. There are no bathroom facilities just nature. It is a nice quiet cove with amazing views. The stars and the moon light up the sky. I highly recommend staying there if you have boat access. It is secluded and private.

Twin Rivers RV Park & Campground

    Very accommodating

We had to have a couple tires replaced on our RV and not only were they able to fix us up with new tires at their Chevron Station, but she was able to find a space in their RV Park for a couple of nights. It wasn’t a great space, but it was fine. There are some nice large trees, grass in some areas, but not for our space. Although our fellow RVers weren’t real close, we were close to the shower facilities and there were lots of small campers using those giving us very little privacy. We are traveling with a very timid dog making it more difficult for us. We did not use the restrooms so I cannot comment on those. About every space has a picnic table but no fire pits. Somewhere in this distance there was a dog that barked almost continuously during the day, but I don’t think it was in the RV Park. Their prices are very reasonable and I would stay here again.

The Last Resort RV Park & Campground

    Excellent private campground for tenting

We enjoy tenting in relatively primitive national forests and usually avoid private campgrounds. But our friends recommended Last Resort on the River, and we were pleasantly surprised. The tent sites are separated from the RV sites in a forested area along the river. We shared a campsite on the river that had lots of trees and plenty of room for two tents and a canopy. Several other tent sites are carved out of the brush along the river. This makes a very nice setting with lots of privacy. The sound of the river is soothing and there was very little sound from the road.

It was a short walk to the amenities of the campground. There is a picnic shelter where we sat out a rainstorm, a very nice bathhouse for showering and washing dishes, as well as a comfortable indoor sitting area and another outdoor area with chairs and a fire pit. Ice and firewood are available at the office. Rich delivered them to our site. There are also some ice cream treats there and a few snacks. There is a fishing pond and a volleyball court. The rabbit hutch would have entertained the kids, if we had any with us.

There is no cell service, but the wifi was excellent and reached our campsite on the river. My wife was able to participate in a Zoom meeting from the picnic shelter where there was a convenient electrical outlet for her computer.

Rich is continually upgrading the property. He was very responsive and always willing to help. We highly recommend this campground.

The Last Resort RV Park & Campground

    Fantastic Getaway

Once again, the folks at Last Resort provided a great time. Stayed 2 nights, and were able to get us in earlier than the normal Check in time. Also, I have got to say their showers are so nice and powerful after having camped over 4 days in New Mexico and Colorado. Love the fact they have ice readily available when you need it. Definitely a must visit or stay along your travels.

Guide to Tierra Amarilla

Cabins near Tierra Amarilla, New Mexico provide access to diverse recreational opportunities in the Carson National Forest. Situated at elevations between 7,500-8,000 feet, this region experiences cool summer nights with temperatures dropping to the mid-50s even during July and August. Local cabin rentals typically range from rustic wooden structures to modern accommodations with varied amenities.

What to do

Fishing access points: The San Juan River offers prime fishing spots near Chama River RV Park & Cooper's El Vado Ranch, where one camper noted it's "a short walk to quality waters" with "fishing on the property." The Chama River is recognized for trout fishing throughout the warmer months.

Train excursions: The historic Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad operates from May through October. One visitor at Twin Rivers RV Park & Campground mentioned, "Not much in town to do but there is the Cumbres & Toltec train to ride." This narrow-gauge railroad travels between Chama, NM and Antonito, CO.

Hiking trails: Several cabin properties connect to local trail systems. At Ghost Ranch, a visitor reported, "Chimney Rock hike is not to be missed!" The trails provide varying difficulty levels, with some suitable for beginners and others offering more challenging terrain.

What campers like

River proximity: Many cabin rentals feature creek or river access. According to a Little Creel visitor, "Rio Chama river runs right next to the park so you can fish or wade through the creek." These waterfront locations are especially popular during summer months.

Wildlife viewing: The forests around Tierra Amarilla cabin rentals support diverse wildlife. At Ghost Ranch, the natural setting allows for wildlife observation, with one camper describing it as "an artist paradise" with "beautiful land formations and gorgeous sunsets."

Peaceful atmosphere: Many visitors value the quiet environment. One camper at Cooper's El Vado Ranch described it as a "slice of heaven" with "no phones (a short ten minute drive if you need it), just fishing and family fun." This disconnected experience appeals to those seeking to escape digital demands.

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Most cabin rentals have limited connectivity. At Twin Rivers RV Park & Campground, a visitor noted "No wifi but very good Verizon and AT&T service," while other properties may have no service at all.

Weather patterns: Summer thunderstorms are common in July and August. A Little Creel visitor advised: "Pack rain gear if you're camping in July/Aug because the monsoon flows up with some pretty good t-storms."

Reservation timing: Summer weekends fill quickly, especially when train excursions operate. According to a visitor at Pagosa Riverside Campground, "We were making some last-minute travel plans, and the PRC folks helped us find a perfect site on short notice" - but this isn't always possible during peak season.

Tips for camping with families

Swimming opportunities: Several cabin locations offer water access for cooling off. At Pagosa Riverside Campground, "You can rent paddle boats, swim & fish in it if you want. There is a nice walking path around it & the river that you can also park near."

Educational activities: Ghost Ranch provides learning opportunities, with one visitor noting, "Georgia O'Keefe lived in the property for a while, so there's a lot of history about her, and there's a small dinosaur and anthropology museum on site."

Meal options: Some locations offer food service. A Ghost Ranch visitor mentioned, "RV spots with hookups are $45 a night! Most guests stay in housing/lodging, so the ranch has a dining hall that serves three meals a day. $16 per person per meal but $30 for three meals on a 'meal plan'."

Tips from RVers

Site selection: At Little Creel, site locations matter significantly. One RVer warned, "We stayed in Space 20; which is supposed to have the creek behind it (so we paid more), but there's a bunch of electrical boxes there so you can't see it or access it and there's also a huge manhole sticking up in our space!"

Hookup considerations: Electrical services vary between properties. Twin Rivers RV Park offers "Full hookups 50/30amp" according to one visitor, while other properties may have more limited electrical options.

Shade availability: Tree cover varies by location. A Little Creel visitor noted, "Some of the spaces have the shade of large trees" while adding that "Spaces are fairly close together and lots of people as one would expect at an RV park."
