Best RV Parks & Resorts near San Rafael, NM

RV parks near San Rafael provide a mix of full-hookup options along Interstate 40. Lavaland RV Campgrounds offers 40 sites with electric, water, and sewer hookups suitable for large motorhomes. Just 5 miles east, Blue Spruce RV Park in Grants has 30 full-hookup sites available year-round, though spaces are somewhat close together with many occupied by long-term residents. Bar S RV Park in Milan features pull-through sites with full hookups on gravel pads, accommodating bigger rigs with reasonable spacing. "Lavaland is a nice rv park with newly cemented pads and updated electrical, though some spots are dirt and not level at all."

Several parks offer amenities beyond basic RV sites. Grants KOA Journey stands out with its complimentary continental breakfast and optional dinner delivery service directly to RV sites. Most area campgrounds maintain reasonable rates, with Sky City RV Park advertising $19-29 nightly for full hookups when mentioned at check-in. Cell service varies significantly throughout the region, with Joe Skeen Campground offering limited reception primarily at higher elevation sites. Winter visitors should note that while most commercial parks remain open year-round, some state park facilities like Bluewater Lake State Park operate seasonally from April through October. Road noise from I-40 affects several properties, particularly those with sites positioned closer to the highway.

    Grants KOA Journey

    Convenient to many activities

General: Conveniently located close to I40, there are 20 pull-through 50-amp sites, 16 pull-through 30-amp sites, five back-in water/electric sites (ok for tents), five tent-only sites (no hookups) and four cabins. Other amenities include showers, laundry, a short (approx. 1/3 mile) walking trail, free WiFi, and a playground. We were welcomed by a very friendly staff and offered a cookie upon check-in. But perhaps the best amenity is the dinner service. You have a choice of several entrées, sides, and pie, choose your 10-minute delivery window, and the food is delivered directly to your site! A free continental breakfast is included as well.

Site Quality: As we expected, there is little privacy/separation between the sites. Our site (A) was located right next to the playground so expect to hear children playing if you are in this site (assigned by staff upon check-in). The sites are all gravel and level.

Bathhouse: Three all-in-one toilet/sink/shower combos and one additional bathroom. All were very clean, and the shower was very welcome after many days without one! There were two hooks, a bench, a garbage can, electrical outlet all in the room. There was a little drainage issue but there was an additional drain in the room. There is a code to access the restrooms.

Activities: There is so much to do in the area! The campground itself has a short walking path where pets are permitted. Outside of the campground, you can go to Ice Caves/Bandera Volcano (about 30 miles away) and a bit further, El Morro National Monument. One exit east takes you to El Malpais National Monument with more trails (note the Ranger Station and Visitor Center is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays but you can still visit). Chaco Canyon is about two hours north. There are also several museums in the area and also a stretch of Route 66 (be sure to pose your car and yourself for a selfie in the Route 66 Arch!) Note you will hear an occasional train and road noise from I40.

As far as the campground itself is concerned, it is nothing special but the amenities more than make up for it! We highly recommend the pie!

    Grants KOA Journey

    Great place to stay!

Friendly staff. Bathrooms were private and clean. Laundry facility on site is easy to use and clean. There is a small gift shop with a variety of items. Close to Hwy 40. There is a walking path next to the campground that is in a lava field and there are signs along the path with fun facts of the history of the lava field. Dinner available to order from resident kitchen and food is delivered to your campsite. Free pancake breakfast every morning. Dog specific areas are available for your furry companion.
Sites are level gravel pads easy to get into. Mix of back in and pull through sites. 3 cabins are available as well. Playground for the kiddos. We spent one night here and really enjoyed our stay.

    Coal Mine Campground

    Great for a weary traveler

Visited the coal mine campground after driving a 500 mile day, so it was a set-up eat and crash situation. I did make a reservation on line, but that cost more than the $5 per site fee and was not necessary even though it was memorial day weekend. The fee is great because it is primitive, no electricity, no water at all, not just hookups, but the bathrooms were nice and clean with no sinks.

If you are prepared for a primitive camp with your own water and batteries for your electronics it is great. They have fire rings, grills, picnic tables and level places for tents. There are also nice back-in sites for boondocking RVs and the road up to the campground is fine for big rigs.

I ran into two mountain biker's here from Ireland that were riding the Continental Divide trail from The Mexican border in New Mexico to the Canadian border in Montana. They were staying here since the Trail goes through here. Paddy & Conner were very interesting people and I was fortunate to have run into them here.

I enjoyed my stay with a peaceful quite nights sleep and a short hike in the morning before breakfast cooked on the campfire. I would recommend this over a hotel stay if your passing through Grant's New Mexico on I40. You can probably get a site for the night anytime your passing through.

    Lavaland RV Campgrounds

Easy freeway access, close to shopping

Grants NM is about a hour west of Albuquerque. Great location if coming from the west, you’re tired and want a place to stay. The sites are pull through and full hookup. El Morro RV Park and Cabins

    Special Spot

We loved this RV park for many reasons. Friendly people, creative vibe, nice campground, cozy cabins, full hookups for RVs, beautiful spot, free-range chickens, pet friendly, plus a yurt with enchanting wind chimes, spiritual labyrinth, a gong, art and healing artifacts. Not to mention the groovy Ancient Way cafe which was closed when we were there (April 2021) but opening next month. My parents stayed in the cabin and loved it, we stayed in our camper van. We really enjoyed talking with some of the folks who live there and it’s a very welcoming community. Feels like home. Morro National monument nearby is spectacular. We’d love to return and stay for a few weeks. Special spot.

    Bluewater Lake State Park Campground

    Lakefront camping

Uncrowded when we were there State park located right on a man-made lake. unfortunately, the lake level is extremely low! Decent sites each with picnic table and fire pit some with shade canopies others with a little natural tree cover, not a lot of privacy. Pit toilets, no drinking water available except at maybe the RV sites with hookups and at the pump outstation? Weak cell signal. Seems more suited for RV's.

    Bluewater Lake State Park Campground

    Decent campgrounds

Good campsites. Clean showers and full hook ups as well as low key pull through sites. None of the sites are close to the water but only a short hike or drive. Catch release Tiger Muskie was the fishing my husband was after.

    Coal Mine Campground

    Quiet, relaxing basic campground

Had a relaxing, quiet three night stay from 8/10 - 8/13/21 with our Jayco Octane Lite SL161 toyhauler. The only facilities are clean vault toilets. Some pull through spots for smaller camping units. I would not recommend this campground for large RVs.

15 sites available with about 8 that I could comfortably park my camper in. All sites have table, barbecue, and fire pit/ring. All sites are reservable online at Recreation.gov. When arriving without a reservation and staying for more than one or two nights be aware that empty sites without a reservation posting may have a reservation that has not been posted. You could wake up and find a reservation posted at your site and have to relocate to another available site.

There is a nice hiking trail available from the campground. La Mosca lookout is a nice drive from the campground with beautiful views. Head up to the Gooseberry Trailhead to hike to the top of Mt Taylor the highest mountain in NW New Mexico.

Camping fees for this campground are increasing to $10 per night next season.

Joe Skeen Campground - El Malpais NCA

    Great Views of New Mexico

Great Dispersed Camp Ground less than 20 minutes off of  I-40 that will accommodate all types of camping from tents to large trailers. (There is a dip in the gravel road leading up to the camp ground that did scrape my jack but I think if you hit it at an angle it might be OK.)

Within 20 feet of my campsite site I could see for miles of the gorgeous  valley.

Each camp site has a fire pit, grill, and picnic tables covered with a roof and has a nice pit toilet and trash within a very short walking distance.

I am here in the beginning of November and it is chilly and about to get downright cold with expected snow tomorrow, down to 16 degrees the next night, even though it looks more like the desert.

I have a very good signal with Verizon, TMobile is low.

Water is available at the Ranger Station up the road, and Walmart Super Center and other stores within 20-30 minutes.

Guide to San Rafael

West of Albuquerque in New Mexico's high desert, RV camping near San Rafael, New Mexico sits at elevations around 6,500 feet, creating moderate summer temperatures and cooler nights. The area features distinctive volcanic landscapes with ancient lava flows and Native American heritage sites. Winter nights often drop below freezing, with occasional snow between November and March.

What to do

Explore lava formations: El Malpais National Monument is directly across from Lavaland RV Campgrounds, offering trails through ancient volcanic terrain. "It's not scenic by any means but, it is close to Mal Pais National Monument (across the street) and the people that work here are super nice," notes Chelsey M.

Visit ancient sites: Tour Acoma Pueblo near Sky City RV Casino & RV Park, one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in North America. A camper mentioned, "We have a pull thru site that has all hookups. Make sure you mention the $18 billboard to get that rate."

Hiking opportunities: Trails through volcanic formations offer unique terrain with jagged lava rock formations. "There's an on-site brewery and bar but we didn't stop in. If you're tent or car camping be sure to arrive during the day or talk to someone prior to checking out as those sites are less expensive than the RV sites," shares David R. about the proximity to local trails.

What campers like

Budget-friendly options: Several parks offer discounted rates when mentioned at check-in. "Make sure you mention the billboard for the cheapest rate of $19 per night otherwise it's $29 per night," advises Lee D. about Sky City RV Casino & RV Park.

Clean facilities: Campers consistently note the well-maintained shower facilities at area campgrounds. "The showers were newly renovated. Fresh paint in bathrooms," reported Heather H. about her stay at Lavaland.

On-site dining: Several parks offer convenient food options. "Big truck stop gas station across the street if you need anything. Casino has a buffet restaurant and another bar to watch the game. Ended up staying an extra night to get prime rib on Saturday," shares Josh F.

What you should know

Cell service limitations: Reception varies significantly throughout the region, with higher elevation sites typically offering better connectivity.

Winter camping conditions: Most commercial parks remain open year-round, but state parks have seasonal closures. Bluewater Lake State Park Campground operates from April through October. "Nice host greeted us and explained where the best sites were for our very large 5th Wheel. The sites with power were already taken, but we can boondock and the pull-through sites were great," explains Grace D.

Long-term residents: Many RV parks have permanent or semi-permanent residents. "Easy check-in. Many sites have water, electric & sewer. Sites are very close to each other and there are no tables. The dog run is very small. Road noise from I40. It appears that most sites are occupied by full-timers," notes EV P.
