    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

Great Dunes and Perfect Pit Stop

I always stop here on my to North TX from Southern New Mexico. Gorgeous dunes and sunrises and sunsets from anywhere at this camp. The bathrooms are always super clean and there are even showers!

    Quite campground

Nice and quite campground. Sand dunes are cool and o see but hard to walk in with the sand so soft. Sites are spacious and have a picnic table. Good for a day or 2 stay. Only downside is no sewer hookup at site but does have a dump station close by.

    Jal Lake Park

    It’s not bad!

We stayed here for a dump and refill after few days of boonedocking. It has water, 20/30/50amp and a dump station. No sewer but dump station is pretty close by with clear signs. There’s 6 spots for RVs to park. Enough space for big rigs and can park additional car on the side. There is a shaded picnic area and a grill.

There is a lake beside close by with a beautiful sunset which was a plus and the best part is, it’s FREE!

Downside is it’s off of a pretty busy road, so some noise from cars passing by.

Verizon had LTE 3 bars but not that fast for some reason. Video streaming lagged a bit.

There were about 2-3 other RVs staying and going. There is a 72hr limit. There is nothing around in the town though. Lowes grocery did have little more than necessities.

Would come again for quick refill.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    So cool

Loved this campsite! It was so cool to see all of the sand dunes. Right off the highway exit but far out where you can’t hear any traffic noise. Drinking water, electric, bath house with hot showers, and picnic tables available. Decent price with amenities. You can rent sand discs and sled down the mountains. Definitely recommended to check out for a night or two!

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Sand dunes in Texas?!

General: Small (25-site) campground in one loop. Temporary park headquarters as the huge visitor center at the entrance was under construction when we were there.

Site Quality: Sites have paved driveways, covered picnic shelters, bbq, electric hookup, and water a spigot. Some sites are back-in and some pull-through. We watched some larger rigs try and fit into the back-in sites, which are smaller than the pull-throughs. Our site (25) seemed to have two picnic tables and two BBQs (there were some on the other side for the site next to us so not sure why there were two in our site unless two campers would come together?)

Bathhouse: There is one all-in-one and one regular restroom with two additional showers (and a connecting door between them. Hot water and soap dispensers but no paper towels. The showers were incredible – hot water, great water pressure, and clean. One of the best campground showers I have ever had!

Activities: Explore the dunes! There are no designated paths; you are free to climb the dunes and explore. Saucers are available to rent for $6 and wax for $1. The sunsets are beautiful. The constantly shifting sand makes beautiful patterns and great photographs. If the moon is not full, night sky photography.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here exploring the dunes (and the incredible shower!).

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Small, convenient, quiet CG

We have a 36 ft Class A with a Cherokee Trailhawk tow and stayed in site 28 for 5 nights in early/mid September. The CG is clean, well maintained. The CG roads are paved, but narrow, as are the pull-through sites. The sites themselves all seemed mostly level. The CG was very quiet and peaceful. There were only 3 or 4 other campers in the CG while we were there. Our site, 9, was a pull-through, as were several, but some were back in. There isn’t any shade, but we had a decent breeze, which helped. Our dog loved frolicking in the sand dunes, but do watch out for goathead burrs, she found a few.

AT&T coverage was pretty good with 2 bars of LTE service and speeds up to 17 MB/s. We had a clear view to the N at the site, so Starlink was fine with speeds up to 20 MB/s.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

Monahans Sandhills State Park + Sand + Wind

My friends and I made a short stay at Monahans Sandhills State Park on our way to Guadalupe Mountains National Park. We made a reservation online because we knew that we would be arriving late considering that we were leaving after work at 6pm and out drive would be at least 5 hours. It is possible to pick up supplies or eat in the town of Ozona or Fort Stockton.

Upon our arrival, it was fairly easy to find our assigned campsite because all of the campsites appear to be located along a loop road.

Each campsites has water and electric hookups. There are also a sun shade, picnic table and grill. The bathroom was located a short distance from our campsite and contained sinks, toilets and showers.

The main attraction of this park is definitely the sandhills. One can explore the sandhills freely, but I think that it might be a good idea to not venture too far from the main campground unless you are familiar with desert navigation or are equipped with a GPS. One can walk up the sandhills, roll down the sandhills or just stand in awe within them. I was surprised to find a variety of flowers thriving amongst the sandhills. How does that happen?

There are not any marked or designated trails at this park. There are not many facilities or activities to do. The main attraction is the sand, the sandhills and the sunrises. Even though our stay was short, I really enjoyed staying at this park and watching the sunrise in the morning.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Amazing place, reasonable price, secluded

This was perfect. Stars and meteors epic. Close to the highway but secluded. Of their 20 or so sites only 3 were taken. Electric and water hook ups, trash, friendly staff, clean bathrooms. Epically quiet - cool at night. $15 camp fee plus $4 per person unless you have a Texas park pass.
