    KOA Kampgrounds of America

Clean showers, laundry too. Campsite is cramped though.

We came here as it was late I’m the day and we had nowhere to stay for the night. This KOA had plenty of spots and some laundry machines and shower which was awesome.

It’s like a typical RV park, very close quarters. The facilities are clean, and it has a dog park too.

The site is right off of the highway and has plenty of traffic, so be prepared for lots of noise around. $40/night is what we paid.

    Goldenrod RV Park & Propane

    Wonderful

I have lived here for 9 months. The office staff are friendly and helpful. They are family friendly and pet friendly which is a big deal for me. The people in the park are respectful. I have made many friends here and it feel we are more like a family then we are friends. When you have a problem with something, the office gets it taken care of really fast. I love the fact that they have shower houses and a laundry facility. This is a great place to stay at. I would recommend this place to everyone.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Amazing place, reasonable price, secluded

This was perfect. Stars and meteors epic. Close to the highway but secluded. Of their 20 or so sites only 3 were taken. Electric and water hook ups, trash, friendly staff, clean bathrooms. Epically quiet - cool at night. $15 camp fee plus $4 per person unless you have a Texas park pass.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

Serene desert escape in the middle of Texas Oil Country

We loved staying here for a night on our drive through West Texas, the perfect midway stopping point. This state park is a nice natural respite from the noise and lights of oil country and towns.

Easy pull-through sites and well-maintained bathrooms. Sunsets and sunrises here are stunning. Feels like you're in a foreign desert.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    Quite campground

Nice and quite campground. Sand dunes are cool and o see but hard to walk in with the sand so soft. Sites are spacious and have a picnic table. Good for a day or 2 stay. Only downside is no sewer hookup at site but does have a dump station close by.

    Midland RV Park

Great stop over with lots of resupply options in the area

Nice stop over. Gravel, level, all services work as expected. Staff was very friendly, bathrooms, showers& laundry are VERY clean and updated. Tokens& quarters are available at the office. Site#66, Long Pull through, easy in/out. Surprisingly strong internet. HEB, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, lots of resupply options in the area. We would stay here again.

Only negative, which is no fault of the campground, is there is a LOT of construction in the area making entry a challenge with some scary U Turns in the city because our Garmin doesn’t register it.

So for any traveling in the immediate future here’s some notes. Exit 134 is closed(2/11/22), take exit 135. Do NOT try any route that takes you on the entrance through town, that end of Midland Road is closed. Stay on the frontage road, go through the 4 way stop(the frontage road curves up& back), then continue on the frontage road(has some construction but is passable) to Midland road, take a right, the park will be on the left. The office is the 1st entrance and pretty clearly marked.

If you’re traveling in the next month or so, call ahead and they can give you the latest ‘best’ route... wish we had, newbie mistake.

    Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground

    So cool

Loved this campsite! It was so cool to see all of the sand dunes. Right off the highway exit but far out where you can’t hear any traffic noise. Drinking water, electric, bath house with hot showers, and picnic tables available. Decent price with amenities. You can rent sand discs and sled down the mountains. Definitely recommended to check out for a night or two!

Guide to Gardendale

Gardendale, Texas sits within the oil-rich Permian Basin at an elevation of approximately 3,000 feet, where temperatures can fluctuate dramatically between seasons. The flat terrain surrounding Gardendale creates unobstructed views of the night sky, making stargazing a popular activity for campers visiting this West Texas region. Winter overnight temperatures frequently drop below freezing, while summer days regularly exceed 100°F.

What to do

Sandboarding adventures: At Monahans Sandhills State Park Campground, located 30 miles southwest of Gardendale, visitors can rent sand discs for sliding down dunes. "You can rent snow sleds and go sand boarding. There's gorgeous wildflowers all over in the spring and summer and the sunsets are always 10/10 here," notes Christina H.

Night sky viewing: The minimal light pollution around Gardendale creates exceptional stargazing opportunities. "Stars and meteors epic. Close to the highway but secluded. Of their 20 or so sites only 3 were taken," reports Zoey T. about her experience at Monahans Sandhills State Park.

Local exploration: Andrews County offers free RV parking with utilities for travelers wanting to explore the town. "City park one block away. Restaurants within walking distance," mentions Raimo J. about staying at Andrews County Chamber of Commerce camping area.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many campers appreciate the well-maintained amenities at local campgrounds. "Amazing playground and pool for families beautiful shower facilities, lots of washer and dryers. Full hook ups," writes Stephanie K. about Park Place RV.

Helpful staff: Campground personnel frequently receive positive mentions in reviews. "Beyond friendly and welcoming staff, very level spots, bathroom was clean and upscale," notes a visitor at The Rusty Boot RV Park.

Budget-friendly options: Free or low-cost camping is available in the region. "Stayed 3 nights for free. Donations accepted. 5 sites available on a first come, first serve basis. Used 30 amp and water hook ups," reports Yvonne M. regarding the Andrews County Chamber of Commerce camping area.

What you should know

Site spacing variations: RV parks in the region have varying site configurations. "Park itself looks a little rough, and is close to the highway and railroad. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. $40 for a pull through and full hookups," explains Shalise J. about her stay at Midessa Oil Patch RV Park.

Weather considerations: The West Texas climate presents specific challenges. "In January, it gets pretty cold at night around freezing, but warmed up nicely every day. One day was so windy. It was rocking my fifth wheel like it's never rocked before," reports Butch K. about Monahans Sandhills.

Limited availability: Some free camping options operate on first-come terms with restricted capacity. "Downtown Andrew's Texas for free. Can't beat it. Electric, water and dump up to 3 days," says John R. about the Chamber of Commerce sites, which only offer 5 spots.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Certain campgrounds offer recreational facilities specifically for children. "We have lived here for 9 months. The office staff are friendly and helpful. They are family friendly and pet friendly which is a big deal for me," explains a reviewer at Goldenrod RV Park & Propane.

Sand activities for kids: Bring plastic sleds or rent sand discs for children to enjoy the dunes. "Loved this campsite! It was so cool to see all of the sand dunes. You can rent sand discs and sled down the mountains," recommends Nicole K. about Monahans Sandhills.

Pet safety considerations: For animal-friendly camping near Gardendale, Texas, watch for hazards in natural areas. "Our dog loved frolicking in the sand dunes, but do watch out for goathead burrs, she found a few," warns Ray & Terri F. about their Monahans Sandhills visit.

Tips from RVers

Connectivity options: RVers requiring internet should plan accordingly. "AT&T coverage was pretty good with 2 bars of LTE service and speeds up to 17 MB/s. We had a clear view to the N at the site, so Starlink was fine with speeds up to 20 MB/s," shares Ray & Terri F. from KOA Kampgrounds of America.

Navigation challenges: Construction can complicate arrivals to campgrounds. "There is a LOT of construction in the area making entry a challenge with some scary U Turns in the city because our Garmin doesn't register it," warns Erin H. about traveling to Midland RV Park.

Dump station availability: Not all pet-friendly camping near Gardendale offers full hookups. Some locations provide dump stations for departure use only, while others offer more complete services. "Free electrical and water. Free dump station. Donations excepted," notes Raimo J. about the Andrews County facilities.
