Polson-Flathead Lake KOA accommodates pets with its fenced dog run area and tent sites with water and electric hookups. Located 47 miles from Dixon, this campground sits overlooking Flathead Lake with spacious RV sites that include patios and chairs. Dogs must remain leashed when outside designated pet areas. The tent sites, RV spaces and cabins all welcome pets, though campers should check for any breed or size restrictions upon arrival. The campground maintains clean bathroom facilities with private showers and a spacious laundry area for longer stays with pets. Some tent sites are positioned in open areas without tree cover, making them less ideal for dogs needing shade during summer months.

Missoula KOA Holiday, about 40 minutes south of Dixon, features pet-friendly tent sites, RV spaces, cabins and glamping options. The campground's proximity to hiking trails offers opportunities for dog walks with varying difficulty levels. Nearby Kreis Pond Campground provides a more secluded option with seven well-spaced sites around a small pond, though accessing the location requires navigating several miles of dusty, gravel roads. Bear activity has been reported in the area, necessitating proper food storage to keep pets safe. Jocko Hollow Campground positions some sites next to a creek, providing water access for dogs who enjoy splashing, though pet owners should be cautious during spring when water levels rise in the evenings and can flood lower areas. Lolo National Forest's dispersed camping areas permit pets without fees, offering more freedom for off-leash play in less developed settings.

      Granite Peak RV Resort

      Nice area out of town

Nice amenities (mini golf, horse shoes, pool, dog park), close enough to town. Grass at our site.

      Jim & Mary's RV Park

      Beautiful campground

This is one if the prettiest and cleanest campground we have ever stayed at. The sites are gravel, mostly level and most sites have shad. The pull through sites on the outer edge do not but others inside do. The laundry and bathhouse was very nice and clean. $2.00 per load to wash. There is flowers everywhere and they have a sprinkler system to keep everything pretty so you can’t leave anything out overnight that you don’t want to get wet. They mow each Thursday and are constantly doing upkeep on the grounds. FHU was a plus and made our stay enjoyable. There is a small dog park but it’s mostly in the sun so we chose to enjoy walks. The only downside (if I had to find one) was the train close by that was very squeaky as it went by. But I never heard it during the night.

Trout Creek Campground (Mt) — Lolo National Forest

Trout Creek up to Hidden Lake

This hike into the lakes is not for the faint of heart, but the most breath taking views of Montana at its finest. There are plenty of Brook trout and huckleberries to eat at each trail and lake. There is also a lot of wild life, including mountain goats, moose, deer, and elk. Please make sure when bringing pets that they know not to chase these animals and always look at fire reports before heading into this area.

      River Edge Resort

RV Park and Casino-don’t shy away

I was a bit apprehensive when the sign read, “RV park, casino” (restaurant, motel).....but! This place is nice. Sites are close, so prepare to be friendly. Highway is close by as well, so you will hear some traffic noise. A train occasionally runs slowly across the river. Campground nicley maintained. But, the lawnmower is out there everyday!!! Loud and unneeded. Shower and Laundry available. Nice quiet road to walk pets. And beautiful view of river and mountainside.

      Campground St. Regis

      Nice visit

Friendly and helpful staff. Clean and spacious restrooms and showers. Plenty of green space for pets. The only downside was the freeway noise.

      Edgewater RV Resort & Motel

Flathead Harbor Resort RV Luxury Condos and Cabins / Edgewater RV Resort & Motel

Stayed in a cabin for a couple nights and had a great stay! You can hear a bit of road noise due to being in town and near the main road, but everything else was great: clean, showers, laundry facilities, near groceries/restaurants, pet-friendly, etc.

    Guide to Dixon

Dispersed camping near Dixon, Montana offers a mix of forested sites and riverside access within Lolo National Forest. Located in the Clark Fork River Valley at approximately 2,500 feet elevation, this area experiences warm summer days with temperatures often dropping 30-40 degrees at night. Spring camping requires preparation for rapid evening water level rises in riverside locations.

    What to do

Fishing access: Lolo National Forest Recreation Area provides multiple spots along the river for fishing. "Beautiful site right next to the river" notes camper Meaghan M., who appreciated the proximity to water. The area has several fire rings at designated sites and remains relatively uncrowded even during peak season.

Mountain hiking: Trails near Kreis Pond Campground connect to the Sleeping Woman hiking trail. "Great secret camping spot... the trailhead is off to the left and it's a heavy incline to the top so be prepared with lots of water and an awesome view at the end. 360 view of the Missoula Valley, Bitteroot Mountain Range, Flathead in the distance and Mission Mountains as well," explains Kirsten R.

Wildlife viewing: The National Bison Range sits approximately 40 minutes from Missoula KOA Holiday. One camper recommends: "If you have a couple days here I would suggest a 40 minute drive to the National Bison Range. The kids will love it!"

    What campers like

River sounds: Muchwater Recreation Area campers appreciate the natural white noise. "Found a great spot - level with access down to the river. Fire pit. So peaceful," reports Chelsey S. The riverside sites provide both recreation and relaxation opportunities.

Tent-friendly terrain: The grassy sites at Jim & Mary's RV Park receive high marks from tent campers. "Sites are grassy with flowers and sprinklers. Sites are all level with gravel. There are picnic tables," notes Susan V., highlighting the well-maintained grounds that work well for both RV and tent camping.

Privacy between sites: Petty Creek Road Dispersed Camping offers good separation between camping areas. "3 sites in a beautiful spot, about 5 minutes off the highway. We pulled in about 7pm and we were the only ones there. Someone else pulled in around 9 but the sites were separated by enough trees we could barely tell they were there," writes Sarah S.

    What you should know

Wildlife precautions: Bear activity requires proper food storage near Kreis Pond Campground. "Wooded and sites are along the lake, but views aren't fantastic. Saw bear prints, definitely lock up foods. Bring water treatment methods," advises Harry H. Similar precautions apply throughout the region.

Seasonal water fluctuations: Evening water level rises affect riverside campsites during spring months. At Jocko Hollow Campground, camper Sierra V. cautions: "Be careful camping next to the rivers as in early spring, waters rise in the evenings and will flood out the lower Plains."

Road conditions: Several dispersed camping areas require navigating gravel roads. Tom N. notes about Kreis Pond: "Be prepared for several miles of dusty, gravel, washboard road." Similarly, access to Petty Creek Road requires attention to navigation, as camper Jacob R. explains: "If you have an RV don't miss the turn! We have a 27 foot RV towed with a truck... Initially we missed the turn and had nowhere to turn around since this is on the side of a mountain."

    Tips for camping with families

Site selection for shade: Consider seasonal temperatures when selecting spots at dog-friendly campgrounds near Dixon.
