What to do
Fishing opportunities: COE Harry S Truman Reservoir Long Shoal Park provides lakeside access with minimal walking required. "Just got back after 2 days there. Sites are spaced a good distance apart, nice clean lots with fire ring, picnic table and 30 amp. I picked site 69 which overlooks the lake and was less than 30 yards from water edge," notes Joe G.
Kayak rentals: Truman Lake offers kayaking with affordable rental options. "Lake-view sites, beaches, flush toilets and showers, all for $15/night," reports Dare To Everywhere at Berry Bend - Harry S. Truman Lake. The area permits gathering driftwood for campfires at certain locations.
Biking on paved roads: The region offers family-friendly cycling routes with minimal traffic. "Nice level area great for bike riding. They only have one hiking trail but it was well marked," according to Steve W. who visited Bucksaw Campground, noting the terrain is particularly suitable for casual riders.
What campers like
Clean facilities: Most campers appreciate the well-maintained bathhouses. "The shower house is clean and big! The toilets are clean and get cleaned often," reports Lanei S. at Sparrowfoot. Multiple reviews mention recently updated facilities throughout the area.
Water recreation access: Direct lake access ranks high with visitors. "Further past Loop B the road turns to gravel and there is a parking lot with a walkway to the lake. This offers some small bluffs with deep water for jumping off," explains Devin M., describing Sparrowfoot's swimming areas.
Wildlife viewing: The area supports diverse wildlife watching opportunities. "This state park has something to offer everyone in the family," says JoAnn P. about Knob Noster State Park Campground, adding, "Spent 5 nights. The campground filled up on the weekend but it was very quiet."
What you should know
Seasonal water conditions: Lake levels fluctuate seasonally, affecting shoreline access. "When we were here (July) the lake was pretty muddy but I'm not sure if it's always that way or not. It was also pretty low, but still had plenty of fun and kayaked through all the little coves," mentions Devin M. about Sparrowfoot.
Cell service limitations: Connectivity varies widely between campgrounds. "Outstanding park! Huge sites, brand new power poles, shaded, and well patrolled for an extra feeling of safety. Poor Verizon coverage, TMobile a little better," notes Russ G. at Sparrowfoot.
Wildlife encounters: Lake Jacomo - Fleming Park and other area campgrounds report varied wildlife. "Raccoon have taken over the park. And the state workers have done nothing," warns Angela D. at Knob Noster, suggesting storing food securely when camping in the region.
Tips for camping with families
Playground access: Some campgrounds feature dedicated play areas. "Loop B also has the playground which is right behind site B47. It's a newer playground and all equipment was nicely maintained. There are no swings. Only complaint is that there are no benches or picnic tables at the playground so bring your camping chair," advises Devin M.
Swimming spots: Family-friendly water access varies by location. "If you walk further around the corner to the right, it turns into a nicer 'beach' style area with few rocks, although the mud can be a little thick after it rains," notes a visitor to Sparrowfoot describing swimming areas.
Educational programs: Cedar Hill Amphitheater offers yurt camping near Urich, Missouri with educational opportunities. The 300-site facility includes electric hookups suitable for both tent and yurt camping experiences, with showers and trash service available to visitors.
Tips from RVers
Hookup quality: Electric service has been updated at many locations. "Nice COE campground. Sites were spacious with 50 Amp hook ups. Some sites had been recently redone, new grass, rock pads and elec pedestals," reports Jay M. about Sparrowfoot.
Level sites: Most campgrounds offer concrete or gravel pads. "Flat level gravel site with plenty of space to spread out with an amazing view of Truman Lake and Long Shoal Marina," notes Dan & Penny F., who add, "With America the Beautiful Senior pass, cost of site was $10 per night."
Dump station access: Plan for limited sewer hookups at most public campgrounds. "Dump station and fresh water fill station at camp ground entrance," confirms Dan & Penny F., describing the typical setup for RVers staying at Long Shoal Park and similar locations offering yurt and RV camping around Urich.
