    Rutlader Outpost RV Park

    Great Campground

We’re from Kansas City and there are very few options when it comes to Campgrounds. This is by far our favorite and their rates are very reasonable. We enjoyed our stay, staff was very friendly and the park was clean and easy to get in and out of. You’re also very close to Hillsdale State Park, but this location has a tornado shelter 🤣

The park: great store, laid out well, gravel sites. Some are back in but most are pull through. Full hook ups- power/water/sewer.

72 Sites: 30' wide, 60' long and level 24 Sites are pull thru All have 30 & 50 amp service

You are within 40 minutes of southern Overland Park, and within approximately an hour (depending on traffic) to Kansas City.

Amenities: Laundry Storm Shelter Showers Meeting room available for RV Rallies (Must Schedule) Fishing Lake

Cellular: service was good, able to stream video, work, Facebook, etc.

Rates as of April 2020 (from their site):

-DAY RATE: $45.00 -CLUB RATE: $40.00 (Good Sam's, FMCA, AAA, Military) -WEEKLY: $215 -MONTHLY: $575 Back In $700 Pull Through (if not paid by due date, Day Rate will apply.)

    Walnut Grove RV Park

Close to downtown Merriam and KC

My husbands job took us to Merriam Kansas and we needed a place to stay, we made reservations at Walnut Grove. We were surprised to find it in the middle of a neighborhood. The staff were very nice and helped us into our site. The sites were on gravel and very close to each other. Walnut Grove was both short and long term campers. There were no tent sites. We had full hook-ups, cell service, and free wifi. We had a picnic table and fire ring and could purchase firewood at their store.

During our stay I was awakened to a startling noise and couldn't figure it out until I went outside and saw the walnuts falling onto our camper. By the time we left, everything was covered(stained) tarnish brown. The park is in a walnut grove hence its name. They had a dog run which was not fenced but provided some grass for the pups. They had a laundry mat and clean showers with good water pressure. There also was a strange noise coming from the trees and when I asked the office what it was they thought it was locusts. I knew that was not their noise so I had to find what it was. After searching, I found that it was tree frogs 🐸 and it was their call. So if you are there in September listen and you will hear them, they love the walnut trees.

Sunflower Campground — Hillsdale State Park

    Very Clean and Very Relaxing

The Park: We love this park, it’s massive, and really pretty. They have so much to do (listed below). Sunflower Loop is our favorite and has full hookups. There are more primitive loops as well. It is ADA accessible. There was not a tornado shelter as of 2018. This is one thing that should be mandatory given its proximity and being further away from potential shelter. Excellent camping on the lake. Lots of water activities available.

Sites: level, clear, easily accessible. Sunflower loop is widely spaced and plenty of room for larger RVs.

    Cellular: decent cellular signal.

    Weston Bend State Park Campground

Quiet campground close to many Kansas City attractions

Campground is hilly, sites are level, gravel pads. Lots of space between sites. Electric sites, no water, but water spigots were scattered around the campground. Majority of sites had shade. Most sites are back in, there are 2 pull through sites and 2 family sites. Firewood is available for sale on the honor system near the camp host. Nice shower facilities and laundry available (one washer, one dryer). Regular trash dumpster and also recycling. Pit toilets also available. Dump station across from dumpsters and recycling. Entrance gate closes at 9 pm.

    Cozy Corner RV Park

    Cozy location south of Clinton

Nice park that has flat/level sites with 50/30 full hookups. Salt water pool, play ground, camp store with onsite storage available for campers or boats, this is a great place to be if you want to do some fishing or hunting at Truman Lake.

Small pond on site and storm shelter. Cell coverage a bit shaky- park has wifi

Increase in the number of RVers has this place packed so a quick call and reservation to hold the site is recommended

    Great owners

    Peculiar Park Place

    Shakedown with old friends

This is the campground to be at if you are looking for a staging area just south of the KC area with full hookups, level sites and amazing owners.

Recently downsized our rig and selected this location for the initial shakedown. Had an easy to access pull through site that had 50/30 amp access, water and sewer. Nice landscaping, plenty of place to walk.

Accepts cask or check for payments, propane sold on site. Short drive from Flying J and grocery store

    Peculiar Park Place

    Great place!

We enjoyed it here, but it snowed so we didn’t explore the trails while we were there. Our internet worked great through Verizon and ATT, we never tried the park WiFi. Clean laundry facilities, pull through site was a little tight, but worked well. If we’re in the KC area again, we’ll definitely stay there. Only drawback, the target audience is a bit older so no playground or park for kids, but plenty of open grassy areas worked too. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. They do propane refill, which was awesome.

Guide to Lake Winnebago

RV camping near Lake Winnebago, Missouri offers access to multiple campgrounds within a 50-mile radius of this small community. Located in Cass County, Lake Winnebago sits at approximately 1,000 feet elevation with hot, humid summers and cold winters typical of the Midwestern climate zone. Most campgrounds in this region remain accessible year-round, though seasonal weather conditions affect camping comfort from November through March.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: At Basswood Country RV Resort, campers can fish in five small lakes without needing a fishing license. "You could fish in the lakes and didn't even need a license. We watched kids get excited as they caught fish after fish," notes Shannon G.

Swimming options: Several campgrounds maintain pools for summer recreation. Basswood Country RV Resort provides "a swimming pool and splash park, two playgrounds, a basketball goal, and fishing," according to Tori G., making it ideal for warm weather camping.

Downtown exploration: The Campus RV Park location allows easy access to Independence attractions. "Just 30 minutes to downtown Kansas City and maybe 15 minutes to arrowhead stadium, this campground is ideal for being close to everything that Kansas City offers," explains Wendy T.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Most campers appreciate well-maintained bathrooms and laundry areas. At Owl Creek Market and RV Park, "Laundry and bathrooms were clean. The road in camp was rough so drive slow. Staff was nice. Bought some good cheese at the camp store," reports Larry M.

Small town atmosphere: For those seeking quieter locations, smaller parks like Mayview RV Park offer a different experience. "Town population only 600. There's a bar & grill and a brunch cafe around the corner from the RV park. Payment is self serve, no reservations," notes Phil R.

Family activities: Many parks organize regular weekend events. At Basswood Country RV Resort, "Every weekend there are organized activities such as arts and crafts, fishing contests, duck races and frozen t-shirt contests in the pool, and a Saturday evening outdoor movie," mentions Tori G.

What you should know

Airport noise: Some campgrounds experience plane noise. "The campground is on the final approach for the airport, so you get to see a lot planes flying overhead, which you don't even notice cause they are quieter than they used to be, and I think they shut down flights around 10pm," explains Brian A. about Basswood Country RV Resort.

Urban camping considerations: Many parks sit in or near urban areas. At Walnut Grove RV Park, "On the way in the neighborhood itself did not seem very likely to hold an RV park this close to urban areas. But the place is nice, has Laundry, Showers etc," reports Luna L.

Site spacing: RV site size varies significantly between parks. "The spaces are smaller although it is in a nice area where it's shady," comments Joann C. about Campus RV Park, while at Walnut Grove RV Park, "the sites are right on top of each other. I would estimate about 6 feet separated our camper from the RV next to us," according to Jayme J.

Tips for camping with families

Pool amenities: When traveling with children in summer months, parks with pools provide relief from heat. At Worlds of Fun Village, "The camp ground pool is huge and fun for the kids on non park days. The campground is all paved and perfect for scooters and bikes for the kids," shares Jennifer H.

Budget options: For affordable family camping, some smaller parks offer excellent value. "Stayed here for 2 weeks, clean cut and straight forward park. Functions like a campsite with a registration box. Can't beat $20 a night for full hookup. Small park right next to it that the kids enjoyed," reports Rocio C. about Mayview RV Park.

Entertainment proximity: For families seeking theme park access, location matters. At Worlds of Fun Village, "The theme park offered discounted tickets when staying at the campground and parking for the parks was included. Worlds of Fun and Oceans of Fun are internally connected, making it easy to walk between the two," notes John L.

Tips from RVers

Payment systems: While most parks require advance reservations, some use self-registration. "Payment is self serve, no reservations. Couldn't get WiFi to work but cell connection (T-Mobile) was fine," mentions Phil R. about Mayview RV Park's $20/night full hookup sites.

Connectivity issues: Cell service varies widely between parks. At Campus RV Park, one camper found excellent connectivity: "We're in #22 - with wifi access point right here. 66m down, 24m up. It was so good (and the park is full) I did not bother testing my mobile plans," reports Kevin H.

Seasonal operations: While many RV parks operate year-round, off-season visits offer different experiences. At Worlds of Fun Village, one camper noted: "Stopped here on our way south for spring break. The amusement park was not open yet, so the campground area was relatively quiet and the price for full hookups was not bad."
