      Trace State Park Campground

      Needs some work

Trace State Park near Tupelo, MS. Once you get into Tupelo the signage directing you to the park is easy to find and follow.

The road in is in terrible shape, the lake is missing, the levy being worked on. They have horse, ATV and mountain bike trails which are in okay shape but could use some TLC. There are rental cabins and the store is limited to souvenir type merchandise and disc’s.

The staff at the park were very helpful and the facilities, which included a showerhouse/multipurpose room and screened porch were very well taken care of. I definitely liked the large shower stalls!

The sites are spacious, including a fire area, picnic table, electric hookup, water and sewer hook up. You have some privacy and depending on your site sparse to full shade.

There is Disc golf, fishing, and currently limited water sports. We used the multipurpose room and a nearby site that had more then enough room for all of us to sit around the fire.

Tupelo, Mississippi is nearby with Elvis’s birthplace. In addition there are several recreation areas to visit on the Natchez Trace with historical information and trails to explore.

      The best in Mississippi

Excellent hiking. Primitive camping sites available, but are developed with fire rings & mingled in with RV camping. Cabins in park as well

      Tishomingo State Park Campground

      Best State Park in MS

Around 12 miles of trails, 43 acre lake, Bear Creek flows through the middle of the park providing class 1 & 2 rapids. Canoe trips are available but I prefer kayaking further downstream. They have 3 different disc golf courses throughout the park with disc rental at the office, as well pavillions, picnic tables, grills, literally anything you could ask for.

      Tishomingo State Park Campground

      Peaceful Camping!

We've visited Tishomingo State Park twice in the last few months.  The first was in February when we stayed at the cabins.  They have big porches, a kitchen, bathroom, and two beds which was perfect for two couples to visit.  They are quite old, but it adds to the charm of the cabins.  We had a fire in the fire pit at night, played disc golf, hiked, and walked down to the river to sit a bit.  Such a nice weekend!

Easter weekend we took our camper to Tishomingo State Park.  It was a lovely time despite the rain on Friday night!  We spent one afternoon playing disc golf and hiking.  The hiking trails are lovely!  Our dog enjoyed it too.  On Easter weekend, there is a huge Easter egg hunt for children which drew a lot of people.

      Tombigbee State Park Campground

      Pleasantly surprised!!

We have camped at several MS state parks near Memphis (Tishomingo, Wall Doxey) and have left feeling like MS didn’t have a lot to offer, but Tombigbee State Park is great. There is a video included in the post which includes the entire campground area. I hope you find it helpful. Additionally, here is a basic overview of pros and cons:

      Pros:

      1. All sites close to the bathhouse
      2. Most sites with full hook up including sewer and 30/50 amp plugs. (see pics)
      3. Multiple updated playgrounds
      4. Very affordable. $24 a night for a full hook up site.
      5. Very walkable. Small campground with access to amenities by foot.
      6. Disc golf course is very fun. It is has an interesting layout in the woods so it is much like a hike.
      7. The park is near Tupelo, MS and there is a Dollar General right at the entrance to the park.
      8. If you are primitive camping, the tent camping area is outstanding. (see pic) There are picnic tables, elevated tent platforms, places for hammocks, a porch swing and bench around a raised fire pit. If you are primitive camping, it is a great place.
      9. There are several docks for fishing and there were signs for the option of boating with a trolling motor, but no one was boating while we were there.
      10. The park office was not open while we were here, but it did look updated
      11. Great for young kids because the campground is small with a flat loop that is easy for bike riding, skating, or scooters. It is easy to see the kids from your campsite and not worry about them getting lost
      12. frequent monitoring by the park rangers. Appears that this park is very well taken care of.

      Cons:

      1. Absolutely no shade on the playground.
      2. Inside loop spots are mostly close together. very little privacy.
      3. We were not able to view the inside of the bathhouse.
      4. only 20 sites and only 4 tent camping areas and were without water or electric.
      5. No SP swag so no stickers, patches, shirts, etc.

This is an A+ for the price, amenities and location to our home base of Memphis. We will definitely be back.

      Tombigbee State Park Campground

Great for families! Trash location is an issue though

The campsites were nice. They clouded full hookups, a picnic table and fire ring. The area was clean and surroundings wooded. Neighboring camping spots were adequately spaced. There were lots of areas for kids to play, including a large playground, a baseball/kickball field and hiking/biking trails.

One big problem, however, was the location of trash dumpsters and cans. There were NO TRASH CANS in the camping area, and the few that were somewhat nearby had signs saying to take your trash to the end of the park road, which was a mile away. This was a problem because we had already hooked up our RV and couldn’t jump in and run the trash that far. Needless to say, whoever maintains the park is being a little lazy and doesn’t want to bother handling trash. Other than that, it was a fairly well maintained park.

      Tishomingo State Park Campground

The best kept secret in MS

I had never really heard about this wonderful place until it was suggested to me on a comment asking about finding the elusive Hellbender salamander. Tucked in the northeast corner of Mississippi are the foothills of the Appalachian Mountain Range. You all know how much I love mountains. So we had to go check it out. And I'm so glad we did.

The landscape is like no other you'll find in MS. The various rock formations, trails and creeks that make up the park provide numerous opportunities for exploring all aspects of this well kept secret. The park is also steeped in a rich history of the Native Americans who once walked the lands and the Civilian Conservation Corps who constructed the park. If you're into geology, the rock formations are pretty fascinating.

Whether you're a small kid or a kid trapped in an adult's body like myself, you'll find something to do here. The pictures in the link will give you an idea of what to look forward to along with a few nearby spots. My only minimal complaint was that the standard campsites were a little too close together, in my opinion. Otherwise, I was uber impressed.

      Things to do:

Tent camp - Standard & Primitive

      RV or Car/Truck camping

      Hammock camping

      Group camping & Family Cabins

Fishing, Hiking, Kayaking, Canoeing, Rock Climbing (with permit), Bike Riding, Herping, Birding, Disc Golf or just plain Relaxing

      Amenities:

Power connections at all camping slots with the exception of the primitive sites

      Bathroom and Shower facilities

      Pavillions

      Picnic tables & grills

      Park office

(You can view my photos via FB on Crazy Camping Chick.)

      Tishomingo State Park Campground

      Quaint and quiet

This is our first visit here. First impressions are that it is a small, quiet park. It turned out to be less than we expected but not total a let down. The drive in and area in and around the park are beautiful scenic areas. We have encountered several trails, a lake, basketball area, pool, and other typical campground facilities. The sites themselves are mostly spacious with rather small camper pads. The green areas around the pads are spacious but mostly in even. We had a hard time finding an area flat enough to put up out tent on level ground. There is a grill, fire ring, and picnic table on each site.

    Guide to New Albany

Trace State Park occupies 570 acres near New Albany, Mississippi, featuring a 565-acre lake stocked with catfish and bass. Cabin accommodations in the region typically reach maximum occupancy during summer holidays and weekends when temperatures average 90°F. Fall brings milder conditions with reduced humidity, creating comfortable overnight temperatures in the mid-50s.

    What to do

Disc golf access: Wall Doxey State Park Campground offers an 18-hole disc golf course winding through pine forest. "The highlight for us is the disc golf course that winds through the pine forest," noted one visitor who also warned about ticks during warmer months.

Fishing opportunities: Tombigbee State Park Campground provides bank fishing access with multiple docks. "There's also a small lake with a dock. Otherwise Tombigbee SP really wasn't that memorable," shared a camper who stopped overnight.

Lake activities: Trace State Park Campground offers direct water access from multiple sites. "Our site backed up to the lake and was beautiful! Lots of activities and has a marina. Fishing was great," according to one visitor who enjoyed the lakeside setting.

Walking trails: Multiple paths accommodate different fitness levels across several parks. "Clean campsites and bathrooms. Nice hiking trails," reported one camper about their experience at Trace State Park, highlighting the maintained pathways.

    What campers like

Quiet environment: Howard Stafford Park Campground provides a peaceful setting with limited sites. "Small campground attached to a public use park. Gated after dark with older but usable bathrooms and showers," noted a visitor who appreciated the security features.

Wildlife viewing: Natural habitats support deer and various bird species. "We saw a momma dear and her baby cross the road. Lots of trees and leaves everywhere. It's fall," reported a camper staying at Wall Doxey State Park.

Level concrete pads: Most sites feature stable, paved parking areas for easy setup. "The site is a level concrete pad with 50/30 amp, water and sewer," mentioned one Howard Stafford Park visitor who appreciated the solid foundation.

Lake views: Multiple cabins near New Albany, Mississippi feature water vistas. "We were in site 4 on the lake. Beautiful view! Grounds could use some updating but we really enjoyed our stay here," shared a Trace State Park camper.

    What you should know

Road conditions: Several parks report deteriorating access roads requiring cautious driving. "Trace state park is very nice and relaxing. From fishing, kayaking to camping. The roads in the park are terrible! That's the one downside to the park," warned a recent visitor.

Bathroom facilities: Quality varies significantly between parks in the New Albany region. "The bathroom does not have AC or a fan, so it was a total sweat box. The toilet paper was not replenished, there is no hand soap," reported one camper about facilities at John W Kyle State Park.

Site spacing: Wall Doxey State Park Campground offers more separation between campsites than other regional options. "The sites are far enough apart to not feel on top of your neighbor," noted a visitor who appreciated the privacy.

Cell service: Coverage can be inconsistent across the region. "Pros: Clean, relatively quiet even when full, lots of sites with direct, clean access to lakefront. Cons: not much level space between camper pads, access roads need replacing, sketchy cell service," reported a Trace State Park camper.

    Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Tombigbee State Park Campground maintains multiple play areas for children. "Multiple updated playgrounds. Very walkable. Small campground with access to amenities by foot," noted one visitor traveling with children.

Cycling-friendly areas: Flat campground layouts accommodate younger riders. "Great for young kids because the campground is small with a flat loop that is easy for bike riding, skating, or scooters. It is easy to see the kids from your campsite and not worry about them getting lost," shared a Tombigbee State Park visitor.

Splash pad: Howard Stafford Park includes water features for hot weather relief. "Has a splash pad, a basketball court, and several piers on the lake for fishing. You can hear cows in the distance from across the lake," reported a camper who enjoyed the amenities.

Halloween festivities: Some parks host special seasonal events. "We were invited to the halloween get together at the park. And we had no idea it was such a big deal. Every camp site had wonderful decorations and the kids had such a blast," shared an enthusiastic Wall Doxey State Park visitor.

    Tips from RVers

Hookup placement: Serenity RV Park offers convenient utility connections. "There are two sewer connections on both cement and gravel sites, which is a nice convenience. Water and electric hookups are centrally located on the pad, though the electric connection sits low to the ground," advised one RVer.

Water hose requirements: Some sites have distant water connections requiring extra equipment. "The water spigot was in several inches of water, trash littered campsites," noted a John W Kyle State Park visitor, highlighting maintenance issues.

Space for larger rigs: Certain sites accommodate big vehicles with adequate turning radius. "We have a 45 ft class A. We needed a 50 amp site. Only 50 amp sites had annuals on it," reported one camper about challenges finding suitable accommodations at Cherokee Landing.

Site selection strategy: Early arrival provides better options at less structured parks. "The sites are not well marked, so make sure you get there during daylight. Most of the sites on the edges are in the sun most of the day, so be aware of that," warned a visitor to John W Kyle State Park.
