    Eagle Point Primitive Campground

    A Scenic Stay

The campground is located in a beautiful spot on a peninsula with great views of Grenada lake at both sunrise and sunset. The tent pads are nice and each camp has a grill and a nice marble picnic table. Several camps have fire pits, trash cans, and water faucets. There is a nice public restroom just a short walk from any camp. The sounds of the water crashing on the shores around you and the birds singing at sunrise are utterly calming. The only problem is the occasional truck that passes through to sit listening to music or use the campground road as a turn around. This could be fixed if the gate at the entrance were kept closed and only opened for actual campers.

    Eagle Point Primitive Campground

Good views, launch and 2 swimming areas

Part of the day use area has been converted into a campground in 2018. There are eight campsites, each with a level gravel pad tent area, picnic table and grill. There is group fire pit area, with a picnic table. Unfortunately, the only place to have a fire at your campsite is in the grill. None of the sites have electricity. There is a central water spigot. The restroom has flush toilets, but no showers. You can go to one of the other many Corps of Engineers campgrounds nearby to shower. Both times we have stayed here, we were the only ones there. It's so new, almost no one knows of its existence. To either side of it, there is a swimming area in the day use area and at the boat launch / swimming beach. All sites have a water view.

    Choctaw Lake

Great spots by the water, although quite humid on hotter days, camp neighbors are welcoming and the camp host is a charm

Stayed a night and the next day up until two o’clock, (you’re required to check out &pack up before 2pm on leave day) the stay was great, campsite occupants were nice and even gave me and my lady fire starters when we forgot fluid for our coals when we planned on grilling LOL.. we stayed on site 8, it was a nice spot by the back end lake and its quite nice during the day. Nighttime can be quite humid and bug ridden but if you’re equipped for it i’d say this spot is great for beginners or family trips. Fishing is quite slow/inactive unless you’re on a boat, rather over fished.

    Choctaw Lake

    Not for Tent Camping

Pros: Very nice campground. Clean bath houses with showers, beautiful lake with a small beach. Access to mountain bike trails. Verizon cell reception for those going completely out of touch.

No's: Campsites are on top of each other with very little tree cover. Also, tents cannot be set up on grass; only on their "tent pads." (jagged rocks). I asked the camp host if any sites had actual tent pads instead of rocks and was told no.

    This is a must visit

This place was absolutely gorgeous. I was alone in the campground both nights i was there with a couple of people coming in during the day to have lunch at one of the picnic tables.

I might have worked on my tanlines 🤫

I fit pretty good in my 24' motorhome but woupd be leery of something too much bigger.

Do not try to come at night. It is pitch black and steep drop offs.

Really nice set up for tents if thwt is your thing.

    Starkville KOA

    Decent place to stay

This KOA is a decent place. We arrived after the office was closed. We had called ahead and they had a site saved for us. The only issue was, we could not find the site. It was a tent site and we could not find the assigned one. Being the off season and not crowded we just grabbed an empty site. The map they left only had the tent area not individual tent sites marked.

Bathrooms and showers were exceptionally clean. Grounds were clean. Very quiet place. I would stay here again. I looked like all the camper sites were clean and level.

Only reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is due to the site we were assigned to not being marked. Other than that it would be a 5.

Part 2: We had a mechanical issue with one of our motorcycles and the staff at the KOA went out of there way to assist us. They gave us a break on the 2nd night stay due to our situation. Changing this to a 5!!

    Dump Station!

This is a great place to dump your tanks. Only one problem and we expect it to be resolved soon. The charge is $5.00 but there is no one to pay! The sign claims you can pay in the park, the dump is outside the park, at the entrance or exit. Afterwards we continued to “in the park” to pay with our 53’ rig with car in tow. We looked for a place to pay we gave up and had to try to turn around running over the curb with Motorhome and car we thought we should just mail the fee. A BOX AT THE DUMP STATION SEAM TO BE A SIMPLE FIX.

What to do

Fishing at Choctaw Lake: The lake at Choctaw Lake offers good fishing opportunities, particularly in the smaller section of the lake. One camper notes, "Sites 5 and 8 are our favorite. Really, any site on the small lake is great. Large hands in the smaller lake. I haven't even had a bite in the larger lake."

Lake trail hiking: Many campgrounds feature trails around their lakes for walking and nature observation. A visitor reports, "The lake was very pretty and had a wonderful trail around it." These paths typically offer moderate terrain suitable for most ability levels.

Mountain biking access: Some local camping areas provide connections to biking trails. According to one review, there is "Access to mountain bike trails. Verizon cell reception for those going completely out of touch." The trails vary in difficulty from beginner to intermediate.

Disc golf nearby: Local recreation options include disc golf courses near some campgrounds. As one camper mentioned, "There is a disc golf course nearby (but we don't play)." Most courses are open year-round and free to use.

What campers like

Lakefront camping spots: Many campers prefer sites directly on the water. At Choctaw Lake, "This campground was amazing. Our site was right off the lake. The scenery was beautiful, it was quiet, the sites are pretty spread out. Camp sites 3-12 is where you want to be."

Clean facilities: Visitors frequently comment on bathroom cleanliness. One review states, "Bathrooms and showers were exceptionally clean. Grounds were clean. Very quiet place." Regular maintenance appears consistent across most established campgrounds.

Reduced technology access: Some campers appreciate the limited connectivity. As one visitor described, "No WiFi and very little cell signal, as camping should be. We love it." This creates opportunities for unplugged experiences, though signal strength varies by carrier.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: The natural setting provides chances to observe local birds and animals. One camper reported, "Saw eagles and some cute little red birds we couldn't identify." Wildlife activity is typically higher at dawn and dusk.

What you should know

Limited tent camping options: Many campgrounds in the area cater more to RVs than tent campers. A visitor to Starkville KOA noted, "It's a basic KOA with clean showers, laundry, and full hookups." Tent campers should call ahead to confirm suitable sites.

Yurt camping McCool, Mississippi limitations: While glamping options exist near McCool, traditional Mongolian-style yurt camping is limited. Alternatives include safari tents and cabin rentals at select locations. Travelers seeking yurt camping in the McCool area should reserve well in advance due to limited availability.

Varying site conditions: Some campgrounds have challenging tent pads. One camper reported, "Tents cannot be set up on grass; only on their 'tent pads' (jagged rocks). I asked the camp host if any sites had actual tent pads instead of rocks and was told no."

Lake level changes: Water levels at some lakes have receded in recent years. A visitor observed, "Unfortunately the lake has mostly dried up and no longer hits the shoreline of the campground (apparently been this way for 6 years)." This affects both aesthetics and recreation options.

Tips for camping with families

Beach area access: Some campgrounds offer swimming areas for children. As one visitor mentioned, "Nice little beach for swimming, boating and fishing. All quite clean, water and power at each campsite, great showers."

Playground availability: Certain facilities include play equipment for younger visitors. One family noted, "There is a playground for kids, a boat dock if you have one, or you can just fish right off your site." These areas provide activity options during downtime.

Limited youth activities: Not all campgrounds offer structured entertainment for children. A visitor to Starkville KOA mentioned, "4 stars only because of lack of amenities for kids, however, they do have games to rent from office." Parents should plan to bring additional recreation options.

Weather considerations for family yurt camping near McCool: When booking alternative shelters like cabins or tent cabins instead of traditional yurt camping, McCool area visitors should prepare for high humidity. One camper noted, "Nighttime can be quite humid and bug ridden but if you're equipped for it I'd say this spot is great for beginners or family trips."

Tips from RVers

Dump station logistics: RV campers should note the procedures for waste disposal. One RVer shared, "This is a great place to dump your tanks. Only one problem and we expect it to be resolved soon. The charge is $5.00 but there is no one to pay!" Check current payment systems before planning to use facilities.

Campground layout navigation: Some campgrounds have challenging layouts. An RVer reported, "We arrived after the office was closed. We had called ahead and they had a site saved for us. The only issue was, we could not find the site." Arriving during office hours helps with orientation.

Local services proximity: Know the distance to supplies and services. A camper mentioned, "All stores, Walmart, restaurants etc.. are about a 12 minute drive away if needed." Most campgrounds are not within walking distance of commercial areas.
