The campground lies just 4 miles from the historic Natchez Trace Parkway, offering elevated outdoor stays with 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, and clean facilities. These luxury outdoor accommodations feature picnic tables, fire pits, and charcoal grills, with many sites positioned directly at the water's edge for spectacular sunrise and sunset views over the lake. The glamping area provides access to fishing piers and boat tie-ups for water activities, along with clean bathhouses and laundry facilities. Wildlife viewing opportunities abound, with birds and squirrels frequently visible from glamping sites. According to a camper, "The sites are spacious, including a fire area, picnic table, electric hookup, water and sewer hook up. The spacing between sites is good too, you have some privacy and depending on your site sparse to full shade." The proximity to Tupelo provides convenient access to dining options like Harvey's restaurant, approximately 15-20 minutes from the glamping resort.

      Davis Lake Campground

      “Literally lake front camping!”

Davis Lake Recreation Area is situated just 4 miles from the Natchez Trace Parkway. The campground is adjacent to the Eastern shore of the 200 acre Davis Lake. 14 sites are right on the lake front offering spectacular sun rises and evening sun sets, The lake is known to anglers, and wildlife and birds are a given…we had a Great Blue Heron"friend" during our entire stay. The sites were level, paved, and all had nice spacing, picnic tables, fire pits and well cared for electric service (50 amp) and water. Bathhouses were clean and laundry was available. Dump Station. Plenty of historic places to visit in the area and groceries are available in Houlka just 4 miles away. We visited in late September with only 6 sites in use…felt like we had the place to ourselves…and being located in the Tombigbee National Forest there was no light pollution making the night sky a spectacular sight to see.

      Love it

As luck would have it, we spotted this place on our Natchez Trace Parkway map and decided we had enough driving for the day. Beautiful setting among the trees and right next to the lake. Level, fire pits, charcoal grills, picnic tables, water and electric all for 20.00 a night and we didn’t qualify for any discount. Already decided we’re staying another night!

      Eagle Point Primitive Campground

      A Scenic Stay

The campground is located in a beautiful spot on a peninsula with great views of Grenada lake at both sunrise and sunset. The tent pads are nice and each camp has a grill and a nice marble picnic table. Several camps have fire pits, trash cans, and water faucets. There is a nice public restroom just a short walk from any camp. The sounds of the water crashing on the shores around you and the birds singing at sunrise are utterly calming. The only problem is the occasional truck that passes through to sit listening to music or use the campground road as a turn around. This could be fixed if the gate at the entrance were kept closed and only opened for actual campers.

      Eagle Point Primitive Campground

Good views, launch and 2 swimming areas

Part of the day use area has been converted into a campground in 2018. There are eight campsites, each with a level gravel pad tent area, picnic table and grill. There is group fire pit area, with a picnic table. Unfortunately, the only place to have a fire at your campsite is in the grill. None of the sites have electricity. There is a central water spigot. The restroom has flush toilets, but no showers. You can go to one of the other many Corps of Engineers campgrounds nearby to shower. Both times we have stayed here, we were the only ones there. It's so new, almost no one knows of its existence. To either side of it, there is a swimming area in the day use area and at the boat launch / swimming beach. All sites have a water view.

      Davis Lake Campground

      Easy rv camping

We took our 23 foot forest river TT on its maiden voyage here in mid June. It was easy to navigate even though it was dark. Nice level site. There is 30 and 50 amp electric and good water pressure.

We stayed in site 18 by the water, most lakeside sites are about 20 feet from shore, and are mostly grass besides the driveway and tent pad. While we loved the campground we probably wouldn’t go back to this site. There were 2 knockdown trees in front of the site, which made fishing hard. There was also a beehive in the tree close to the fire pit.

The sites away from the water looked to be uneven and on a slope so beware if you take an rv.

There is a swimming beach, a pier, and plenty of place to tie up a boat. We plan to return and explore some more!

Great Lake Views in Deer Run Campground

      PROS

No transaction fee assessed for making my own online reservation

Site 8 excellent view of lake

      Asphalt parking pad

Pedestal BBQ, moveable wooden picnic table and rock campfire pit.

Eagle Ridge campground has 3 washers and 3 dryers $1.50

Heated toilet/shower blding. No AC tho - just a box fan.

1 bar T-MOBILE but we’re able to live stream TV via T-MOBILE hot spot

      CONS

      No senior discount

Site number is painted in the roadway and due to leaves on road difficult to find Numerous large road potholes from entrance gate to campground.  Guess this eliminates any need for speed bumps!

Deer Run campsites very close to each other

      Site 8 unlevel side-to-side

Dirt and sand surrounded asphalt parking pad so during rains (for 2 days) it was a big mess

      Tombigbee State Park Campground

      Pleasantly surprised!!

We have camped at several MS state parks near Memphis (Tishomingo, Wall Doxey) and have left feeling like MS didn’t have a lot to offer, but Tombigbee State Park is great. There is a video included in the post which includes the entire campground area. I hope you find it helpful. Additionally, here is a basic overview of pros and cons:

      Pros:

      1. All sites close to the bathhouse
      2. Most sites with full hook up including sewer and 30/50 amp plugs. (see pics)
      3. Multiple updated playgrounds
      4. Very affordable. $24 a night for a full hook up site.
      5. Very walkable. Small campground with access to amenities by foot.
      6. Disc golf course is very fun. It is has an interesting layout in the woods so it is much like a hike.
      7. The park is near Tupelo, MS and there is a Dollar General right at the entrance to the park.
      8. If you are primitive camping, the tent camping area is outstanding. (see pic) There are picnic tables, elevated tent platforms, places for hammocks, a porch swing and bench around a raised fire pit. If you are primitive camping, it is a great place.
      9. There are several docks for fishing and there were signs for the option of boating with a trolling motor, but no one was boating while we were there.
      10. The park office was not open while we were here, but it did look updated
      11. Great for young kids because the campground is small with a flat loop that is easy for bike riding, skating, or scooters. It is easy to see the kids from your campsite and not worry about them getting lost
      12. frequent monitoring by the park rangers. Appears that this park is very well taken care of.

      Cons:

      1. Absolutely no shade on the playground.
      2. Inside loop spots are mostly close together. very little privacy.
      3. We were not able to view the inside of the bathhouse.
      4. only 20 sites and only 4 tent camping areas and were without water or electric.
      5. No SP swag so no stickers, patches, shirts, etc.

This is an A+ for the price, amenities and location to our home base of Memphis. We will definitely be back.

Staff was helpful and steered in the right direction. Very nice spot next to the bath house. There is water and electricity but no dump. So that was good to have.

    Guide to Houston

Davis Lake, Puskus Lake, and Trace State Park offer diverse camping experiences near Houston, Mississippi. The region sits within the Tombigbee National Forest at elevations of 300-500 feet, with a subtropical climate featuring hot summers and mild winters. Winter camping temperatures range from 30-60°F, while summer highs regularly exceed 90°F with high humidity.

    What to do

Fishing opportunities: Davis Lake Campground provides excellent fishing access with dedicated piers. "Many people boating and fishing. The walking path is about a quarter mile down to a spot where people fish," notes Bruce F. The 200-acre lake supports various fish species.

Hiking trails: Puskus Lake offers two trails totaling about 5 miles through Holly Springs National Forest. While "they are not maintained very well in some areas although they are flat and easy to explore," according to Kim N., they provide a pleasant nature experience for beginners.

Wildlife watching: Bird enthusiasts should bring binoculars. "Great wildlife! Came here for bird watching. Will return to bike the Tanglefoot Trail," mentions one Davis Lake visitor. Squirrels, armadillos, and various bird species are commonly spotted throughout the camping areas.

    What campers like

Waterfront camping: Dewayne Hayes Campground features sites directly on the Tombigbee Waterway. "Plenty of shade and many spots have a direct view of the Tenn-Tom Waterway," reports Will G. The waterfront sites offer unique views of working barges passing by.

Peace and quiet: Many campgrounds in the area remain uncrowded, especially during weekdays. At Puskus Lake, one camper noted, "I have never seen more than 5 or 6 different sites being used anytime that I have been there." This creates an ideal setting for those seeking solitude.

Clean facilities: Trace State Park Campground maintains well-kept amenities. "Clean campsites and bathrooms. Nice hiking trails," writes William M. Several campgrounds in the region provide accessible showers and restrooms, enhancing the camping experience.

    What you should know

Seasonal considerations: Summer months bring high humidity and insects. "Nighttime can be quite humid and bug ridden but if you're equipped for it i'd say this spot is great for beginners or family trips," advises Maddox H. about Choctaw Lake.

Tent pad variations: Some campgrounds have limitations for tent campers. At Choctaw Lake, "tents cannot be set up on grass; only on their 'tent pads' (jagged rocks)," reports Gregory H., so bringing extra padding is advisable.

Road conditions: Access roads to some campgrounds require attention. At Trace State Park, one reviewer noted, "the one downside to the park" is that "the roads in the park are terrible." Plan accordingly, especially if bringing a larger vehicle or trailer.

    Tips for camping with families

Swimming options: Town Creek Campground offers water activities for families. "We paddle in the area by the campground. Almost all motor boaters are very thoughtful in reducing their wake," reports Cyndi H. Several lakes in the region have designated swimming areas.

Playground access: Several campgrounds feature playgrounds for younger children. "There is a playground for kids, a boat dock if you have one, or you can just fish right off your site," notes Tiffany C. about Choctaw Lake's amenities for families.

Educational opportunities: The nearby Natchez Trace Parkway offers historical stops. "Grab a map and walk around Kennedy Lake and the primitive sites," suggests one visitor, as many locations feature interpretive signage about local history and ecology.

    Tips from RVers

Site selection: When seeking yurt camping near Houston, Mississippi, consider RV sites that can accommodate alternative structures. "The sites are spacious, including a fire area, picnic table, electric hookup, water and sewer hook up," notes a camper about Trace State Park.

Levelness varies: Some sites require additional preparation. "The sites away from the water looked to be uneven and on a slope so beware if you take an rv," warns Nate S. about Davis Lake. Bringing leveling blocks is recommended.

Dump station access: For extended stays, note that "this is a great place to dump your tanks" at Choctaw Lake, though one visitor mentions "the charge is $5.00 but there is no one to pay!" Plan accordingly for waste management during longer trips.
