    Clarkco State Park Campground

    Clarkco Love ❤️

This is our second visit within a year to Clarkco. We’ve stayed on both loops. This time on loop 1 we were on site 4. It was tight to get into but had a lovely little land pier onto the lake. This is a very well kept park. The public facilities are very child friendly with a cool and colorful splash pad and cordoned off swimming area. Loop 1 also has a cordoned off swimming area. It’s truly a secret little gem hidden away. It is very quiet and each of the sites are large and private. The public restrooms and showers are extremely clean and well kept. Also they offer large pavilions for large group gatherings. Very dog friendly (we have 3) and the entire campground is respectful of quiet hours from 10 pm to 8 am. The Clarkco staff takes great pride in their facilities!! Thank you. You’ll fall in love with Clarkco too.

    Twiltley Branch

    Great camping on the lake

We arrived at Twiltley Branch at 10pm after two other campgrounds were unexpectedly closed. The caretakers had us check in online and let us sneak into the primitive campsite even though they were technically closed for the night. We drove to the site in the dark and set up camp, not quite knowing what to expect. There were only two other campers at the site, the campground had water stations and fire pits with attached cooking grills and a very well kept outhouse. The best thing about this site was the access to the lake and the little beach where you can wade and swim! This campsite is prone to flooding so it’s not always available. There is a boat launch nearby so we did hear some traffic from boats coming and going but otherwise it was nice and quiet.

Pro tip. There are two campsites right by the lake that are secluded and shaded by trees. They give you almost private access to the lake!

This was such a lovely surprise and we had a great stay!

    A Hidden Gem

Great little lake with a beautiful view. Our Verizon Phone picked up well. Loved the hiking trails around the lake. Well maintained. We stayed on site 31, a pullthrough. Two fire pits and a very large area to play areound the camper. Not a lot of campers in the off season. Will definitely be back with kayaks. The other loop had a private swimming spot. How cool is that?

    Clarkco State Park Campground

Woodsy state park with dispersed camping near a lake

State park near Alabama/Mississippi border. Nice park. Chose to do primitive camping for $15 plus tax, but they offer other options too. -dispersed camping -some sites near lake -mediocre fire pits -picnic table -quiet aside from other campers -other campers seem like they get kind of rowdy there, but this was also a holiday weekend -the sites aren’t numbered and are hard to find in the dark because the fire pits and picnic tables are randomly placed throughout the woods. It was like a treasure hunt to find them. -the amenities were far away which is why we’re giving it 4 stars.

    Twiltley Branch

    Very nice, peaceful park

This is one of those awesome Corps of Engineer Parks that are scattered across the country. We settled in here for a couple of nights and really wished we had more time. Our site was a nice back-in with a great water view. Since we were there in the fall, the park was not even a quarter full so it was very quiet and peaceful. We were going to stay in the nearby town of Meridian but when we found this park is was a no-brainer. It was only three miles off HWY 19 but provided such an awesome place to camp. Campsites have crushed gravel pads and patios (some of which are double in size) and most have a nice amount of shade from the trees. Our site was very large with plenty of room. There are a few pull-thrus but they have a really weird curvature and trees that would make it hard for some large RVs to navigate. The roads in the campground are narrow but most are one-way so that doesn’t really matter and easy enough for us to navigable with our 45’ RV and tow car. All sites are level and have 20/30/50 amp electric that worked well and have a fire pit with bbq grate, separate bbq, lantern crook, and picnic table. Within the campground are pit toilets but about a half mile away at the entrance are showers and a laundry facility. At the end of each campsite are garbage cans so you don’t have to go far to dump your trash. Most all sites have great water views and access in case you want to launch a kayak or canoe.  We decided to pull forward into our site so the view of the lake was directly out our front windshield.  It was perfect!  Our Verizon wifi worked well and got a dozen over the air television channels. There are a couple of small covered picnic shelters with large grills, fire pits, and picnic tables if you want to have a gathering.

A short drive away is Collinsville Park with has a boat launch providing access to Okatibbee Lake. Many people in the campground would launch their boats there and then tie them up on the bank of the campground. There is a small fishing dock in the campground and plenty of bank fishing. The closest town is Collinsville where there is a grocery and some restaurants and you are 25-30 minutes from the larger town of Meridian.

Total hidden gem and must stay

We planned on a 2 to 3 nights and stayed 5 … :).  We were at another local site and was looking for a more quite type of place so we could spend time as a family, so I called over to this place and was overwhelmed by the welcome.  It was late and dark and both owners (Steve and Patty) took my wife and I on a walk through their park with flashlights to show what we could pick from … I have never heard of such fantastic hospitality.  They just purchased the park a few months earlier and have upgraded so much it was almost new.  We eventually settled on two sites they said were rarely used because they were in the far back (#26 and #27) and remote.

The next day when we showed up to set up, they had their team already clear the sites and prep for our arrival.  One of their team members helped us set up and ensure we were fully ready to enjoy our stay.  The site was level and elec/water hook ups.  Overall, the site as secluded, quite, private. We woke up to trees all around us and only one RV long term person that we never saw many feet away.

We were told they would come by with a 'honey pot' and empty our tanks so we didn't have to move since we were staying long enough to fill them with normal use … WOW, I didn't have to hook up and move just to dump!  They did shared with us and show their portable dump tank they use when they camp … I may pick on up.

The park had new dog runs, wonderful store, excellent help, and easy dump stations.  I was concerned because of the location of the spot being at the bottom of a hill, and the owners told us not to worry … if we were not able to pull out, he would for us and didn't make us feel bad at all.  The slide was down for the winter, but it was fine.

The park is well off the beaten path so it is quite at night. Enjoyed the late night fires and early morning mists … My son was able to relax for the weekend away from the base.

    Twiltley Branch

    Nice campground

Nice campground on the western shore of Lake Okatibbee in Lauderdale Co, MS. Lots of sites right on the lake. There are three loops in the campground. Two loops have electric (50amp) and water hook ups. There are no waste hook ups due to the possible flooding of the campgrounds on occasions. There is a dump site at the camp grounds. One of the loops has no electric or water hook ups. There is one bath house with stainless fixtures that is fairly maintained. Make your reservations online at Recreation.gov before you go. We went to bed with the frogs croaking and awakened with the birds chirping. Nice campgrounds. Great access to the lake. Lots of shady spots also.

    Decent, Quiet, Nice Views

    Full Time Travelers

    Stayed here Nov 15-17, 2021.

This place was decent with a beautiful charm.  They had all we needed, and ease of access to facilities was great! I will say, it was a tad confusing coming in even with a map.  It was dark when we were able to arrive, which might have made it somewhat harder to find our spot.  Our site was back in, and pretty tight. (most spots were tight)  Once we could see it clearly in the morning, it was evident how little room for error was actually there.  Used the pool, (kid insisted) it was clean and nice.  Slightly cold being November, but it was great otherwise. For the women's bathroom, it was the nicest bathroom I've seen at a campground.  The men's isn't as updated, but still nice.  Props for the nice facilities! Laundry included in that.  Wifi was pretty good.

One bugaboo was our neighbor's hookup situation.  They had their tank hose set up to drain down the side of the hill.  Their site and ours was not full hookup.  We notified management, and we were told they thought maybe the person was just flushing out new tanks with just water.  That it was the person's first, new camper.  The person had set up the camper and left it setting there with the hose hooked up as described above.  It was unsettling, regardless of the reason.  They also didn't seem overly concerned to check it out and remedy.

Overall, it was a good campground to be at for a couple nights.  Was glad to have 24 hour access to laundry and access to nice restrooms/showers.

Located about 3 miles from Highway 19, the area connects to several water recreation spots across the 4,000-acre Okatibbee Lake system that spans the Pascagoula River Basin.

What to do

Fishing options: Turkey Creek Water Park offers bass fishing in lily pad areas. "Lilly pads and bass," noted one visitor who gave the park five stars. The reservoir contains extensive beaver flowages, stump beds and old creek channels that create ideal fish habitats.

Equestrian activities: Some glamping destinations near Decatur have recently added facilities for horse owners. At Turkey Creek, "small area for camping but new area for bringing horses to camp and trail ride. Clean with nice bunk houses. Fishing was good and sunsets amazing," according to a camper.

Bird watching: Twiltley Branch provides opportunities for wildlife viewing around Okatibbee Lake. "With eagles and hawks in the area, families will enjoy keeping an eye out for these magnificent birds," notes one visitor. The wooded shoreline creates natural habitats for various bird species.

What campers like

Privacy at waterfront sites: At Twiltley Branch, campers appreciate the secluded waterfront spots. "There are two campsites right by the lake that are secluded and shaded by trees. They give you almost private access to the lake!" reports one visitor who discovered these hidden gems.

Recent site improvements: Turkey Creek Water Park has undergone renovations to create better camping experiences. "Recent work on campsites to create level sites. Enjoy camping there," notes a regular visitor who rated the campground highly for its quiet atmosphere and pretty lakeside setting.

Wildlife viewing opportunities: For glamping close to Decatur, Mississippi, nature encounters add to the experience. "Lots of birds and alligators to see. The tent camping sites are pretty small and close together. Each pad has its own water spigot though, and it's a short walk to the swimming area," reports a camper at Twiltley Branch.

What you should know

Campground flooding potential: Some areas near Okatibbee Lake experience occasional flooding. At Twiltley Branch, "This campsite is prone to flooding so it's not always available." During high water periods, certain waterfront sites may close temporarily.

Sewage hookup locations: At Okatibbee Lake Waterpark, RVers should note the specific sewage connection points. "Beware of 2 sewage hookups. No one told us of the possibility of two sewage hookups and which one should be used. We automatically hooked up to the one on the side by the water and electric... we should have hooked up to the one in the center of the pad underneath our travel trailer."

Water park terminology clarification: Some visitors expect slides and rides at Turkey Creek. "By 'water park' they mean 'park with recreation activities on the water' not a man made park with slides and rides. This was devastating news for our friend's young daughter!" Make sure to understand what amenities actually exist at each location.

Tips for camping with families

Check waterslide schedule: Meridian East-Toomsuba KOA offers water recreation during limited hours. "Check in time is 2pm, check out noon. The slide is only open Saturday and Sunday from 2pm-6pm. Playground options: Different glamping sites offer varied amenities for children. The Meridian East KOA has "a pool, slide, game room and very small playground. Great place for kids," though one visitor noted the playground is minimal compared to other features.

Halloween activities: For fall glamping near Decatur, consider seasonal events. At Yogi on the Lake - Jellystone Pelahatchie, "The trick or treating is the best. Start right when you can because there are so many sites offering candy or haunted areas. The spook trail is top tier! And there were plenty of activities throughout the day for the kids."

Tips from RVers

Site leveling challenges: Some glamping locations near Decatur require extra work for RV setup. At Yogi on the Lake, "Our site was a very tight pull thru site. We definitely wouldn't of been able to pull out if the park was full. The site was very sloped so getting in the camper was difficult because the steps were so high off the ground."

Dump station access: When passing through without staying, some campgrounds offer convenient services. "We were just passing thru but used their dump station. Super convenient and clean. They only asked for a donation. Very kind couple!" notes a traveler about Meridian East-Toomsuba KOA.

Full hookup limitations: RVers should check specific hookup capabilities before booking. At Twiltley Branch, "Two loops have electric (50amp) and water hook ups. There are no waste hook ups due to the possible flooding of the campgrounds on occasions. There is a dump site at the camp grounds."
