Based on available data, none of the campgrounds in the immediate vicinity provide dedicated horse corrals or specialized equestrian amenities. Big Sioux Recreation Area in Brandon, South Dakota, approximately 65 miles from Jasper, offers the closest camping facilities with spacious sites and trail access, though it lacks specific horse accommodations. The recreational area features multiple hiking and biking trails along the Big Sioux River that could potentially accommodate horses, but visitors should contact park management regarding equestrian policies before arrival.

The regional campgrounds, including Camden State Park and Garvin County Park, maintain trails and open spaces but without designated horse facilities like stalls or wash stations. Campers report that Big Sioux Recreation Area's spacious sites could accommodate smaller horse trailers at certain campsites, though dedicated equestrian camping is not officially designated. Trail access throughout the region typically requires crossing various terrain types including wooded areas and open prairie. Horse owners should bring portable corrals, highlines, or other containment systems when camping in this region, as permanent equestrian facilities are not currently established at these campgrounds.

      Garvin County Park

Beautiful park with nice hiking trails

We stayed in the Upper Campground in the site closest to the equestrian campground. The kids loved being able to meet & visit with the horses.

The sites were a good size, but not much privacy or tree coverage in the area we stayed. There were a lot of trails to hike and a river/stream that they said you could wade/swim in, but we didn't go into it.

There were a lot of playgrounds, and one really huge one the kids wanted to play on, but with COVID-19 still going strong, we didn't use it.

      Camden State Park Campground

Easily accessible camp sites. Great ammenities.

Stayed in a tent in early may. Camp site was easy to access and close to the restrooms/showers. The camp sites along the river have little trails that go down to the water, beautiful river bottom scenery a few yards away. There is a swimming pond near by and miles of beautiful southwest Minnesota scenery. Trails include river bottom, prairie, and woodland.

      Camden State Park Campground

      Nice campground on the prairie

There are two campgrounds in this park - the upper one is on the prairie while the lower one is situated among trees along the river. We stayed in the lower campground in site 30. The lower campground is close to the playground and swimming pond but it rained the whole time we camped so we didn't use either.

Sites in the lower campground are fairly close together and we didn't have cell service (Verizon), which wasn't a big deal.

I brought my fat bike and bike the Bluebird and Dakota Valley trails. Both are mowed paths that go through prairie and wooded areas. The actual mountain bike trail was disappointing, it was overgrown, narrow, and hugged a high ridge.

Our site, 30, sloped away from the parking pad. You wouldn't be able to set up.chairs under your awning at this site and the picnic table sat in a low spot that got muddy after 2 straight days of rain. There is a river that runs behind the sites in this loop. Our boys played on the rocks and had a great time.

There are nearby train tracks and trains ran by several times a day, though luckily they don't blow the horn so we didn't notice them much.

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

Ok place to spend the night, but could have been better

I spent the night here and had to pay the entrance fee to the park as well as the camping fee for my tentsite. They had only a few tentsites available amid all the RV sites, but they were right on the edge of the playground, so the families had to walk right through my campsite to get to the play area. Not too big a deal as no one wanted to use the play area at night while I was sleeping, but still.  I also looked over at the power lines. There was a flush toilet facility close by but there was a very bright light on all night. Good for families needing to navigate in the dark but not wonderful if you like sleeping in darkness. And though I was told that quiet hours began at 10PM, the site next to me was quite loud through the trees until at least midnight so the quiet hours are not enforced. Meh. I don't think I'll be going back.

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

      fine for an overnight

It was okay for an overnight, The sites are nice, plenty of shade. It was crowded the night I was there but quiet. It's a strange place in that it is on the edge of suburbia, located right next to an apartment housing development. If you like proximity to services, restaurants, etc. It would be a good stop. It would be great if you were visiting family/friends in the area, easy to get to. Just not what I was looking for.

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

      Lots of shade and grass!

We stayed here in a travel trailer. The site was level with lots of shade and grass. Spacious sites, not too close. Our site was along the river but it wasn't easy to access the water from our site. The biking, walking trail was great! Lots of bugs and mosquitoes. It was very quiet here, and the rangers were really nice. We had electricity and could access water close by. Only a long drop toilet nearby, but there were bath houses. There was firewood for sale at the entrance.

Big Sioux Recreation Area — Big Sioux

Nice little nook with lots of cover!

This campsite was great! We had a tent site, number 24, and it was tucked into the woods but still close to the parking lot!

The neighboring sites are far enough away where you still have privacy but if you had two next to each other with a large group it could still function as one. Beautiful hiking trails, play grounds, disc golf, volleyball net, and so much more. Also, the lady at the front was cute as a button!

      Highly recommend!

      W.H. Lyon Fairground

Convenient to downtown and fine for the night

We stayed here one night and got to experience some South Dakota wind rocking our camper during the night. The bathrooms are huge and very clean but someone left dirty diapers in trash and by morning the smell was rough. Area along fence borders highway with  much closer sites and road noise. We opted for area on grass near arena.
