Sterling State Park offers full hookups with pull-through sites that can accommodate any size RV, with sites set on paved slabs. Located on the shores of Lake Erie, the park features both electric-only and full-hookup options. Multiple paved pathways and hiking trails run throughout the campground, connecting to the beach areas and inland lakes. The park is situated between industrial facilities but maintains natural areas for recreation and camping.
What to do
Fishing opportunities: Sterling State Park Campground provides multiple access points for fishing, including an inlet suitable for kayaking. "It has a boat ramp to put into Lake Erie. Not a lot of shade on the sites!" notes Debra B., who also mentioned the smaller lake is "good for kayaking and fishing."
Boating access: Kelleys Island State Park Campground offers multiple water recreation options with boat docks and launch facilities. "The campground has a little bay which works out great for having a small boat, jet-ski, and also a small swimming area," reports Rebecca F., who camped there with her family.
Nature exploration: Several boardwalks and trails near Monroe campgrounds provide opportunities to observe local wildlife. "The 2-mile boardwalk through the wetlands, the Big Hill, and the nature center" are highlights at Kelleys Island according to Daniel U., who describes it as having "amazing small town feel with cute shops, family activities, world's largest glacier groves."
What campers like
Clean facilities: South Bass Island State Park Campground maintains well-kept showers and restrooms. "The campground includes very clean flush toilets and even cleaner showers (no cost for the showers). Wood and ice are available at the check-in building," reports T S., who visited in September 2021.
Waterfront sites: Lakefront camping spots are particularly valued at many campgrounds near Monroe. "A lot of shaded sites and waterfront sites that are right on the water. No city lights and being in the middle of the lake means lots of stars, the sounds of water and being so dark you can barely see," writes Daniel U. about his experience at Kelleys Island State Park.
Recreational activities: Harbortown RV Resort stands out for its range of on-site activities. "Basketball court, sand volleyball, playground, dog run, batting cages and go karts within walking distance," notes Bill B., who appreciated the concrete roads and pads during his stay.
What you should know
Weather considerations: Lake Erie's proximity affects camping conditions throughout the season. "During the week only one shower house was open, they opened them all in the weekend. Got stuck due to rough waters so we got a free night on the island. Always plan ahead and be flexible when going to an island," advises Daniel U. about his Kelleys Island experience.
May fly season: East Harbor State Park Campground and other Lake Erie campgrounds experience seasonal insect hatches. "First two nights were perfect but then the may flies hatched (in mid june) and covered everything," reports Kourtney D. from Sterling State Park, despite giving the campground a 5-star rating.
Site selection strategy: Campgrounds vary significantly in layout and privacy. "Check in crew were real nice. Most sites have some trees. Large playground for kids if you have them. Pedestals worked fine. Plenty of garbage dumpsters," reports Timothy G. about East Harbor State Park, noting its shore access and well-maintained facilities.
