Best RV Parks & Resorts near Deerton, MI

Several RV parks near Deerton, Michigan offer full hookup options for travel trailers and motorhomes. Gitche Gumee RV Park & Campground, located along State Highway M28 E, operates from April 15 to November 15 with full hookups including 50-amp electric service and accommodates larger vehicles. The Ojibwa Casino Baraga RV Park provides basic RV sites with sewer hookups and trash services, though lacking electric hookups and drinking water. "It's a work in progress but brand new, all gravel no tree all pull thru easy setup sites, 20/30/50amp electric, water & sewer," noted one camper about Chocolay River RV & Campgrounds. Rippling Rivers RV Resort in Marquette features big-rig friendly sites with 50-amp service, water, and sewer connections in a more developed setting.

Many parks in the region have gravel pads rather than concrete, with varying degrees of levelness. Seasonal operation is common, with most RV parks closing between mid-October and mid-November, reopening in April or May. Cell service can be inconsistent throughout the area, particularly at more remote locations. Dump stations are available at most established parks including Picture Rocks RV Park, Country Village RV Park, and Whitefish Hill RV Park. A visitor to Chocolay River mentioned, "The water, sewer, drain pipe, and electric hook ups are all in very good condition." Pet policies generally allow dogs with standard restrictions, though limited designated pet areas exist. Reservations are recommended during peak summer months when Lake Superior attracts significant tourism.

    Kingston Lake State Forest

    Good State Forest CG

Kingston SF in Pictured Rocks NP buffer zone. (Scale 1- bad, 5-Very good (70 yr olds in 17’ trailer). I rate primarily based on desire for at least a moderate wilderness type experience w at least some camp site privacy. Cleanliness and care of campground are also taken into consideration. Overall Rating: 4.5. Looks to be on a piece of land that stretches out into Kingston lake. Price 2023: $20 Usage during visit: 3/4 full Site Privacy: pretty good Site Spacing: most sites are very well spaced. Site surface: Dirt covered Gravel Reservations: First come Campground Noise: Quiet Road Noise: None Through Traffic in campground: No. Boat ramp is at cg entry. Electric Hookup: No Sewer Hookup: No Dump Station: No Potable Water Available: A hand pump Generators: ? Bathroom: Pit toilet. Clean Showers: No Pull Throughs: A couple Cell Service (AT&T): No bars Setting: Amazing lake setting. Weather: Partial sun o my Sept 2 visit Solar: Not for fixed panels Host: I didn’t see one. Rig size: 25’ max. Looks too tight for a big rig. Sites: Along lake or Water View: 1-7, 11- 16 , 8,11. All sites, I would be pleased with any site here. Not super private, but so many are right along the water and most of not all have a view of the water . Site 5 looks to have a water view from the campground road. But, it is the most private.

    Little Bay De Noc

    AbsolutelyBeautiful

We were by ourselves on the first loop site #6. Short walk to sandy beach. (Less than 25-30Yds). Deer in camp when we arrived. $21/night. 1/2 price for those with senior National park pass. Nice fire ring with grill and picnic table. About 1/3 of the 38 sites are first come, rest reservable. Only 2 other campers in area end of September. Could fish, swim or do boating from the site. Need gen if you want electric. No dump station but private campgrounds close and perhaps would let you dump for a fee. Several trails. Lighthouse at end of peninsula about 11 mi away. Fairly level sites. Tent pads with pine needles. Big rigs likely would fit but very narrow and tight squeeze. Length and slides not an issue as sites are large.

    Munising Tourist Park Campground

Nice campground, but it can't handle all the electrical draw for every site

This is a busy campground right on Munising Bay on Lake Superior. Reservations for the busy season need to be made months in advance, and even reserving 6 months before our arrival date, we got the last spot. We have a 22 foot travel trailer, so we can fit onto most any site, but this campground draws some huge rigs pulled by tractor trailers.

The people in the office are great. The beach on the bay is spectacular. Overall nice campground at a very good price.

But this is an older campground, and the electrical system can't handle the power draw from the big rigs. People at the end of the power line - beware! Bring your surge protector to protect your electrical system.

We were fine until day 3 where the temps hit 88 degrees, and the big rigs were running their double air conditioners, while we were running just our fridge, water heater and a fan. Draws about 6 amps. We didn't have enough power coming to our site even for that, and the surge protector shut everything down. Thank goodness it did it's job and protected the electrical system on the trailer. At one point the power coming into the site was only 98 instead of 120ish.

So while the big boys further up the line were running 2 air conditioners, we weren't getting enough power to run a water heater, fridge and a fan. We had to put our water heater and fridge onto propane and do without even a fan in 88 degree heat. Thank goodness our fridge and water heater can run on propane, and the lights work on DC, but the fan runs on 110, so it didn't work.

The people in the office were apologetic, and they said we should have power when it cools down and there aren't so many air conditioners running. That was small comfort when we were paying for a 50 amp site for our 30 amp trailer, and we couldn't even run a fan. At least the surge protector kept us from damaging the trailer electrical system - we hope!

    Van Riper State Park Campground

    Great state park for families

Van Riper State Park is a must-visit if you’re traveling through Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  It’s popular year-round, although camping is only open between May and October. Stop for the day to hike the trails and go for a swim, or stay a week and enjoy the sunsets and serenity.

The state park covers both sides of the highway with the campground and day-use area on the south side and a huge section of trails and wildlife viewing areas on the north.

There are 147 sites in the modern campground, including some sites with 50-amp electric service, and there are another 40 sites in the rustic campground. Plus, there are two mini cabins in the modern campground if you don’t own a tent or RV. All of the campsites have a fire ring and picnic table.

One thing we noticed is that the sites at Van Riper are very large– so much bigger than many sites we’ve seen at other state parks. This means there is plenty of space for your trailer, truck, bikes, screen tent, kids’ toys, etc. without feeling like you’re infringing on your neighbor.

Another plus for the state park is the laundry facilities. Two washers and dryers are located in the restroom building near the beach.

Van Riper State Park is extremely family-friendly, with activities for everyone. There are approximately 5 miles of hiking trails on the north side of the state park. One trail provides a very nice overlook of Lake Michigamme and the surrounding area. Other trails run along the Peshekee River or through the woods and may even provide the chance to see the moose that live in the area. The trails are not difficult, but there is some elevation to get to the lookout. If you don’t want to hike the whole 5-plus miles from the campground and back, you can drive and park at the group campground and go from there.

A sandy beach awaits both kids and adults on Lake Michigamme. The lake is popular as it is much warmer than most of the lakes in the Upper Peninsula. A large, fairly new playscape is also located near the beach, as well as a swing set. One of the most unique activities is a bike pump track. This is the only state park that we saw that had one. It was very popular with the kids and is conveniently located between the campground and the day-use area. The lake is popular for fishing and if you have a boat you can use the launch in the back of the park. It also is a good location for kayaking.

Pictured Rocks RV Park and Campground

    Excellent new campground

Open, level gravel sites and some concrete pads scattered throughout this pretty new campground. A few baby trees in the open meadow are trying to get started, but other than those there is no shade. We stayed in a full hook up 50 amp site, and experienced no power issues despite 2 days of freakishly high winds and scorching heat in the 90s. This is an immaculately clean and well run campground. Wi fi is ok for email and phone scrolling social media. The only reason we didn't give 5 stars is due to construction in the campground with dump trucks and beep beep beep of machinery backing up every day. Once they are finished and the shade trees grow this will be a premier campground in a beautiful area. Pets allowed on leash. Trash receptacles convenient to each area of the campground. Bath house with coin laundry machines.

Guide to Deerton

Seasonal camping near Deerton, Michigan offers options from rustic tent sites to full RV hookups. The region receives significant Lake Superior snowfall in winter, with most campgrounds operating between April and October. Sites in the area range from shaded forest sites to open gravel pads within 15-30 minutes of Marquette's amenities.

What to do

Lake Superior beach access: At Bay Furnace Campground, visitors can enjoy a small beach area right on Lake Superior. "There were waterfront sites, vaulted toilets, fire rings with grill tops. For those with RVs there was a dump station as well," notes Lisa R. The campground also features historic bay furnace ruins within walking distance.

Mountain biking trails: Rippling Rivers RV Resort provides immediate trail access for outdoor enthusiasts. "If you love mountain biking or hiking you stay here. Period. You are right on the trails," says Rory L. The resort sits adjacent to a network of maintained trails, with a "grom trail" that runs next to the top campsites.

Explore local history: The area offers several historical attractions within short driving distances. At Bay Furnace Campground, "We love the history of the campground with the bay furnace within the limits. Where they used to smelt iron in a 150 year old furnace is fascinating," shares Corey O. The National Ski and Snowboard Hall of Fame and Michigan Iron Museum are also accessible from nearby campgrounds.

What campers like

Clean facilities: Many RV parks near Deerton maintain excellent bathroom facilities. At Country Village RV Park, visitors appreciate the maintenance: "The bathroom and showers are super clean. Plenty of hot water," reports Pete D., who found the campground "professionally done" with well-maintained sites requiring no additional leveling.

Lake views: Superior shoreline views rank highly among camper preferences. "Sites 9-11 watching sunset from your own tent just can't be beat!" shares Beth H. about Bay Furnace Campground. Another camper at Gitche Gumee notes, "Our site was nice and a short walk to Lake Superior."

Recreation amenities: Several parks offer on-site recreation facilities beyond camping. At Rippling Rivers RV Resort, visitors enjoy "pool/hot tub, putt putt, excellent bar, camp store," according to Craig C. Country Village RV Park also features "a nice pool, however, not much privacy," according to Kyle P.

What you should know

Limited shade at newer parks: Many recently developed RV parks near Deerton lack mature trees. At Picture Rocks RV Park, "It's a newer park but well maintained. The sites are well layout, with a good amount a space between sites," notes Sam C., though they add "It will take sometime for them to grow to provide very much shade."

Seasonal operations: Most campgrounds in the area operate between April/May and October/November. At Indian Lake RV Resort, visitors should note changing availability: "For 2021 - monthly or seasonal reservations only," according to Jennifer B.

Variable cell service: Connectivity varies significantly between campgrounds. "Cell service is pretty good (Verizon)" at Picture Rocks RV Park according to Tee D., while other parks may have limited coverage. At Rippling Rivers Resort, one camper mentioned Wi-Fi access issues that disappeared during their stay.

Winter accessibility: The Deerton area receives significant snowfall, limiting winter camping options. One exception is Ojibwa Casino Baraga RV Park, which operates year-round with "Huge parking lot off the highway, so no road noise," according to Thomas V.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly amenities: Look for campgrounds with specific family features. Country Village RV Park offers "a pool, hot tub & bouncy pillow!" according to Jessica P., who adds, "Our kids loved that there is a pool, hot tub & bouncy pillow!"

Beach exploration: Lake Superior beaches provide natural play areas. "The beach with plenty of neat rocks and glass is a good way to spend a day," Beth H. notes about Bay Furnace Campground. Some campgrounds like Rippling Rivers have river access as well.

Look for shade options: When camping with children in summer, seek shaded sites. "Our tent location was entirely shaded and made it feel as though we were camping in a forest," reports Amie L. about Rippling Rivers, though they noted tent sites were small and not level.

Plan for insects: Bug activity can impact family outdoor time. "There were a lot of bugs while we were there, so it was hard to stay outdoors for a long period of time during certain times of the day," Sam C. shares about Picture Rocks RV Park, suggesting families bring screen tents for comfortable outdoor seating.

Tips from RVers

Site conditions vary: RV sites range from basic to premium across the Deerton area. For full-service sites, Whitefish Hill RV Park provides "long 80-90 foot level pull thru's with full hookup sites and free wifi," according to Patricia V.

Check hookup quality: Evaluate utility connections before setting up. Indian Lake RV Resort has sites where "The water, sewer, drain pipe, and electric hook ups are all in very good condition," according to Mike S.

Consider seasonal options: For longer stays, look into monthly or seasonal site rentals. "For 2021 - monthly or seasonal reservations only" at Indian Lake RV Resort indicates some parks prioritize extended-stay campers during peak season.

Leveling requirements: Many sites require minimal adjustment. At Country Village RV Park, "The site was what looked like a mixture of gravel and recycled asphalt and was mostly level," according to Sam C., who found some sites needed additional leveling work.

Free overnight options: Budget-conscious RVers can utilize casino parking. Kewadin Casino offers basic electric sites for $20 per night with unexpected perks: "You get a free $5 casino credit per night per person staying. That was an unexpected bonus!" shares Victoria K.
