What to Do
Water recreation opportunities: At Sterling State Park Campground, visitors can enjoy Lake Erie activities during summer months. "There is a boat launch which is extremely popular and the bass and walleye fishing can't be beat. No boat, no problem. The park has several fishing piers as well as a kayak launch into a small inlet which is navagatable all the way to the beach, approximately two miles," notes Frances V.
Historical exploration: Sauder Village Campground offers access to unique educational experiences. "The old fashioned village is a step back in time and shows blacksmithing, tinsmithing, broom making, farming, etc. They often have theme weekends and special ticket pricing thru Groupon," shares Jocelyn C.
Biking trails: Many campgrounds near Blissfield maintain dedicated cycling paths. One camper at Maumee Bay State Park explains, "It is also an amazing place to ride bikes, everything is flat and there are also plenty of bike paths. You are also close to the lake which I love."
What Campers Like
Privacy features: Maumee Bay State Park Campground offers secluded sites despite being in a popular area. "One of my favorite things about this campground is that your spots are close together which is great for safety, however with the bushes and brush, it feels super private," explains Kayla H.
Clean facilities: Consistently well-maintained shower buildings appear in numerous reviews. At Harbortown RV Resort, a reviewer noted, "Bath houses were very clean. Everything well kept up. We enjoyed our couple days here! Wifi on site."
Lake access: Many campers appreciate waterfront proximity. "The beach is a short walk from any site, mostly sandy with small rocks occasionally," mentions a Sterling State Park visitor, while another adds, "Beautiful view of the water, however the beach is usually busy so it can be difficult to find a clean spot."
What You Should Know
Weather considerations: The region experiences variable conditions. "Need bigger beach" and "There is not much shade and if lot is full you are very close to other campers" are common notes about Sterling State Park Campground, with another visitor adding, "There's not many trees at all so nothing to block the winds on a windy day."
Reservation timing: Many campgrounds fill quickly during peak season. "The park is often very crowded during the tourist season, so make a reservation," advises one Maumee Bay visitor.
Water quality varies: Lake Erie can have water quality issues. "Swimming if the lake is not with bloom (which happens a lot) but is close to sites. Normally I am not very comfortable letting my kids swim here due to the water pollution and bloom," reports one Sterling State Park visitor.
