Tent camping near Fulton, Maryland offers access to multiple state parks within a 30-minute drive radius, with peak camping season running April through October when temperatures average 65-85°F. Most campgrounds in the region are situated near water features including the Patapsco River, Potomac River, and Chesapeake Bay, providing water recreation opportunities alongside woodland camping experiences.
What to do
Playground access: The Hilton entrance at Patapsco Valley State Park features extensive recreation facilities for children. "There is a huge playground, sensory trail and nature discovery center at the entrance to the park. The nature center was closed when we visited, but the kids still enjoyed the sensory trail and playground," notes Angel G.
Kayaking opportunities: Water recreation is accessible from several regional parks. "Roland Lake in Baltimore County is a great place to kayak on the Patapsco River. Tons of wildlife, facilities, and amenities for you and your family," writes Anthony S. about his experience at Patapsco Valley.
Hiking exploration: Multiple trail networks offer various difficulty levels throughout the region. "The trail was well marked but there was some confusion at one point on where we were suppose to go. Luckily I had an app that kept me on trail. There are some pretty cool Bridges, old houses, and a water fall," shares Anthony S.
What campers like
Proximity to urban areas: Many campgrounds offer quick access to Baltimore while maintaining a natural setting. "Very short drive in to Baltimore - around 30 minutes. Getting in to the park was a little difficult. We missed the entrance and had to turn around," reports Gayle B. about her stay at Patapsco Valley State Park.
Wildlife viewing: Sandy Point State Park provides nature observation opportunities along the Chesapeake. "My family and I have been coming to Sandy Point my entire life. It is a great little spot on the Chesapeake river. Our favorite thing to do is to fossil hunt for sharks teeth," mentions Angel G.
Multiple entrance options: Parks often feature various access points with different amenities. "Patapsco Valley offers 6 different entrances. Each one provides a several different trail heads and experiences," explains Angel G. about the park's layout.
What you should know
Seasonal jellyfish presence: Water activities may be impacted during certain months. "August is the worst month to visit if you like the water. Jellyfish take over with a vengeance!" warns Angel G. about Sandy Point State Park.
Drainage issues: The Adventure Park at Sandy Spring and other sites can experience water problems. "When it rains it really flushes through the grounds. We had a site on the lower end of the loop and our site was hard to set up as we arrived during a storm and it was very wet even after the rain died down," explains Alexandra T.
Strict check-in policies: Some campgrounds enforce rigid arrival times. "This was also the first time we have ever had to wait till exactly 3pm to check in. So if you arrive early expect to wait until 3," notes Gabrielle E. about Patapsco Valley.
Tips for camping with families
Bring extra padding: Tent sites at many locations require additional comfort measures. "The crushed stone at the sites isn't comfortable for tents, and they won't let you pitch it on the ground, so bring extra pads and alternative ways to secure the tent to the ground," recommends Sean M. from Patapsco Valley.
Consider cabin options: Finksburg Forest and other parks offer alternatives to tent camping. "The best part of this campground are the neat mini cabins. Small one room cabins that have electricity and heat. They are a nice touch for those that want to camp, but not completely 'rough it,'" shares Sean M.
Plan for stroller limitations: Many trails and facilities aren't designed for wheeled transport. "Be aware that neither the hiking trails or playground are stroller friendly," cautions Angel G. about Patapsco Valley.
Tips from RVers
Military options available: Military Park United States Naval Academy/Annapolis Naval Station provides budget-friendly stays for qualified visitors. "Military campground. Very spartan but great location. Not much to do in the campground and some long timers there. Dirt cheap," notes Ginny L. about the Annapolis FamCamp.
Limited big rig access: Most camping areas near Fulton have size restrictions for larger vehicles. "This is a small gem of a state park campground, one of only two is the massive Patapsco Valley State Park. It's a bit odd getting here through a suburban neighborhood, but the Hilton area is great," explains Sean M.
Prepare for crowded conditions: Popular water-adjacent sites fill quickly during summer months. "Extremely over crowded in the summer. The park closes daily very early as it hits capacity. The best times to go are winter, spring, and fall," advises Tony P. regarding Sandy Point State Park.
