What to Do
Kayaking and canoeing opportunities: Lake Pemaquid Campground offers boat rentals for water exploration. "This is a great quant campground. It was built back in the 50's but there are plenty of sites for those of us with large campers. They rent kayaks and canoes to explore the lake," notes Tara N.
Hiking trails within walking distance: Camden Hills State Park Campground features extensive trail networks directly from campsites. "One of the real pluses of this park were the miles and miles of hiking trails just outside our doorstep. Driving the tour road to the summit of Mt. Battie (elevation 800') is a must and the views are spectacular," explains Nancy W.
Winter activities during shoulder season: Some campgrounds extend their seasons with holiday-themed events. "The weekend we stayed they happened to be celebrating 'Christmas in July' and so a lot of the campers had put up lights and decorated. They had a band play on Sat night and large bonfire," reports Rachel S. at Duck Puddle Campground.
What Campers Like
Private waterfront sites: Many visitors appreciate lake access for swimming and fishing. "Had a wonderful 4 days at Duck Puddle. An amazing view of the lake from a site that was very level. The staff were all friendly and the facilities were clean and stocked," shares Sara B.
Artistic communities and events: Searsport Shores Ocean Campground hosts regular creative gatherings. "This place is so much more than a beautiful campground nestled among gorgeous old growth trees located right on the shore. It's also a treasure trove of arts of all kinds - fiber arts, metal sculptures, carvings, paintings, and music," writes Kathy L.
Seasonal programming: Duck Puddle organizes recurring entertainment. "They had a band play on Sat night and large bonfire with many kid's activities. Will be planning another trip for sure," Andrew G. states after his second visit.
What You Should Know
Reservation policies vary: While some campgrounds accept last-minute bookings, planning ahead is recommended. "We've stayed at Duck Puddle several times over the years. The sites have always been tidy and staff friendly. Tent sites are close together but comfortable and the location is very convenient to Damriscotta and other downeast towns," explains Alison.
Site configurations and amenities: Shore Hills Campground & RV Park offers diverse options based on camping style. "Shore Hills has a wide variety of sites that can accommodate everything from the biggest size RV to tents. The great thing about this campground is that there is a such a large selection of sites that you pretty much can get what you want," explains Nancy W.
Weather considerations: Maine's coastal climate means preparing for temperature changes. "It's a quarter for a shower but that's fine with me. Lots of trees and plenty of space," notes Val at Shore Hills.
Tips for Camping with Families
Playground and recreation options: Sennebec Lake Campground provides organized activities for children. "We discovered this campsite in 2020 and just returned from our third year in a row camping here with 2 kids. There is a small arcade, store, and 24/7 laundry. Activities started up again this year, with events such as kids' crafts, a kids vs adults water gun fight, cornhole competition, and a DJ for an evening of dancing," describes Pam A.
Swimming areas suitable for children: Beach access points vary between locations. "Great beach for swimming, playground for playing. We have already booked our next trip in a few weeks!" shares Andrew G. about Duck Puddle.
Family-oriented glamping options: Several campgrounds offer alternative accommodations beyond traditional tent sites. "We actually got married here. We stayed in the cabins and a few of our guests camped. The owners are great people. The store is well stocked, and there are a ton of amenities," shares Ashley S.
Tips from RVers
Site leveling and accessibility: Chewonki Campground receives praise for site preparation. "The grounds are beautifully maintained and with modern, clean utilities/amenities. The boat launching area is limited by the tidal stream, but offers terrific, quiet experiences not expected as close to route 1," says Randy F.
Hookup quality and reliability: Some campgrounds offer full-service connections. "I can not say enough how friendly everyone is here. And great live music with large bonfire with many kid's activities," Andrew G. notes during his return visit to Duck Puddle Campground.
Navigating campground layouts: Town Line Camping provides quieter alternatives for RVers seeking peace. "We loved this campground, quiet, a lot of seasonal campers, the lake is a decent swimming temp. The bugs were kind of vicious. The bathrooms and showers were decent," reports AdventureStang.
