Best Campgrounds near Fairfield, ME

The central Maine area surrounding Fairfield features several established campgrounds within a 30-mile radius, primarily offering traditional camping experiences rather than dispersed options. Campground options include Two Rivers Campground in Skowhegan, Skowhegan Kennebec Valley KOA in Canaan, and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Madison. Most facilities accommodate a range of camping styles with tent sites, RV hookups, and cabin rentals available. The camping areas typically provide amenities such as picnic tables, fire rings, and access to drinking water, with many offering full hookups for RVs including electric, water, and sewer connections. Several campgrounds border rivers or lakes, providing opportunities for water recreation.

Camping in this region operates seasonally, with most facilities open from mid-May through mid-October. Reservations are strongly recommended, particularly for weekend stays during peak summer months. Many campgrounds maintain relatively level sites suitable for RVs of various sizes, though some have limited space for larger rigs. Weather conditions can change rapidly, with cool evenings even during summer months. Cell service varies throughout the area, with stronger coverage near larger towns and potential dead zones in more remote locations. Most camping areas charge fees ranging from $30-60 per night depending on hookups and amenities. A visitor commented that "most sites aren't all that level but they're close. The bathrooms are somewhat dated but they were clean. The staff is very friendly and very helpful."

Waterfront camping receives consistently positive reviews, with campers particularly noting the peaceful settings along the Kennebec River. The region supports a mix of seasonal campers and short-term visitors, creating varied atmospheres at different campgrounds. Several established facilities offer recreational amenities including swimming pools, playgrounds, and boat rentals. Reviewers frequently mention the convenience of campgrounds providing firewood for purchase on-site. While some campgrounds feature more rustic accommodations, others provide extensive amenities including laundry facilities, camp stores, and modern bathhouses with free hot showers. A recent review noted that Two Rivers Campground has "a nice dock along the river where you can tie up boats and launch a kayak or canoe. One of the nice features is that they offer free use of their canoes/kayaks/peddle boats."

    Duck Puddle Campground

    Great waterfront sites!

We love coming to Duck Puddle in the shoulder season (spring and fall) when it’s quiet. The waterfront sites (61-66) offer direct access to the lake and have trees between the site for a more private feel. Some have a private dock for fishing or sitting, others have a small beach area. The lake is great for swimming and paddling.

The rest of the campground is more busy and has the sites closer together, which isn’t our scene. Lots of fun stuff for kids to do and evening activities if you like that sort of thing.

    Balsam Cove Campground

    Great place!

We stayed here one night in September in a Tuesday. Quiet, very few people. Had a non electric site without water and paid the same price as the state park in Camden. This place had much nicer showers and bathrooms. Would return!

    Meguniticook by the Sea Campground

    Overpriced!

Corporations are buying up the private campgrounds and charging ridiculous prices. The three around Campden, ME have 4 day minimums making the most basic RV site $ 225 to $260 per stay.

Shore Hills Campground & RV Park

    Lovely River View

Nice campground with a mix of tent/rv sites some in the woods, some by the river and some pretty close to the road. The sites were fairly close to each other but we had a  site at the end that had wonderful views of the river and we could angle our camper so we had privacy. The river is tidal and so unless you want to wade threw mud there is not access beyond a couple hours around high tide. Bath house was old but clean. Coin pay for hot water in the showers. Old school in that you have to call to make reservations and they do not accept credit cards. A few children but it was mostly adults the weekend we visited. Quiet, peaceful, relaxing.

    Cold River Campground

    Just ok

Pretty small site but nice layout. Wifi was terrible. Had to listen to an argument from a neighbor. Someone was parked in the spot and had to move so i could back in

    Duck Puddle Campground

    Nice wooded site on lakeside

We enjoyed our stay at Duck Puddle Campground. The staff were friendly and the place seemed well run. Bathrooms were dated but clean. The site we had was on the water and had great views. It was surrounded by trees and had decent spacing between neighbors. The weekend we stayed they happened to be celebrating "Christmas in July" and so a lot of the campers had put up lights and decorated. They had a band play on Sat night and large bonfire. Everyone was invited to attend if they wanted to. Nice family friendly campground. We are already planning out next visit.

    Honey Run Campground and Beach

    Under New Ownership

Nice campground, we enjoyed our site next to the cabin that our friends stayed in. One thing to note, lots of returning seasonal campers.

The campground offers lots of fun activities, such as bingo, karaoke, and live music. The new owners plan on new upgrades as time goes on.

Perfect stay if you have kiddos and dogs! There’s a playground, arcade, and beach. They offer kayak and canoe rentals. We grabbed a tent site for 3 days and it had water and electric! You get a picnic table and fire ring
