South Campground — Chicot State Park

    Wooded, quiet, convenient, amazing

This was a quiet spot surrounded by woods but near the super clean bathroom! There was a fire pit, grill and picnic table for use! Day 2 we rented a boat and paddled out for some fishing. The process was seamless and the staff friendly. The fishing pier was amazing and the kids loved how far out it went. Overall a great experience.

South Campground — Chicot State Park

    Great State Park

Chicot State Park is wonderful and well maintained. We had a wonderful weekend stay, and the weather was perfect. Take the time to drive around to the East Landing in the evening before sunset. It has one of the prettiest views of Chicot Lake. Also drive down to the South Fishing Pier below the South Campground. It has a long pier that goes out into the lake. My son spent a lot of time at the splash pad. Be sure to visit the free La. State Arboretum onsite. It has a great visitor center with some fantastic exhibits and nice hiking trails.

Stayed in campsite#84. It has a nice deck with picnic table. BBQ grill and fire pit are on the other side of the RV spot. Even though it is in the front, it is actually quite secluded with woods all around. Nearest neighbor was at least 40-50 ft. Away. My son could easily walk or ride his bike to the splash pad. Both AT&T and Verizon had poor signal(1 bar each). Was able to connect to the free park Wi-Fi. It was slow, but I could send text messages and make the occasional phone call. Wasn't a big deal, because I came here to camp and get unplugged. We camped at Chicot State Park in a Travel Trailer.

South Campground — Chicot State Park

    Tall Trees and Nice Trails

We stayed at campsite 91. It was very well shaded and the deck attached to it provided a very nice seating area. There weren't a ton of horse flies at the campsite itself, but they were bad on a few of the trails. Bathrooms were decent but smelled of cleaning products. It was a quiet area and the park has a lot to offer. Highly recommend checking out the Arboretum and the trails near it.

    Poche's RV Park & Fish-N-Camp

    Quit clean camp ground

My site was across the street from one of the 5 large ponds to fish in. 21 was a shaded spot and only 5 spots from playground, splash pad, pool and store.Great people to work with. Golf carts to rent with lots of room to ride around. Only improvement could be on bathroom and showers no a/c or doors ,only curtains but clean just bugs and heat down falls.

South Campground — Chicot State Park

    Great Campground

We went camping in a tent this weekend at the park and really enjoyed it. We stayed at the south landing camping area in loop A. If you plan on camping in a tent I recommend the spots in loop A and most in loop D. B and C are more for RVs but you could still set up there, those two loops are more open and the spots are closer. Loops A and D are a little more spread out and have trees between some spots. The main bathroom was in good shape and had heat. Trash was picked up every morning by the park. Our spot had a fire ring, water , and electricity. The park allows you to use dead tree limbs for firewood. One thing to know about spots on loop A near the comfort station is that there’s a treatment plant in the center that kicks on every once in a while and makes a good bit of noise at night when the motor runs. It helped put me to sleep but it might bother others. Also theres no cell signal except in one or two random spots of the campground but it was nice to unplug for a weekend . We really enjoyed this campground and park though and will definitely be back .

    Lakeview Park

    PRETTY, BUT NOISY

Don't get me wrong, I am not antisocial, but when I go camping I really want the natural quiet of nature. It was pretty busy, with many people gathered and partying. Kids driving crazy on golf carts. Otherwise, the property is pretty. The sites are easily accessible (our camper is approximately 30 ft). The showers were not available d/t covid 19, but were there. Our site 12 was level and had full hookups. Pet friendly. Large trees. Store on site and snack shop near the beach. Very kid friendly.

South Campground — Chicot State Park

    Good hiking, fishing, and scenery!

Chicot State Park is located near Ville Platte, Louisiana. It’s a nice place to hangout for the day. This park has bathrooms and showers, electrical outlets, and clean facilities. The campsites are a mixed bag - some are great, others are extremely unlevel, & close to one another.

The park itself is great. Awesome hiking trails, good fishing, and great scenery! There’s a decent sized lake with some good fishing. I recommend kayaking at this park!

Guide to Jennings

Several RV parks and state campgrounds within a 1-hour radius of Jennings, Louisiana provide camping options in the Cajun Prairie region. This area features cypress swamps, freshwater lakes, and wildlife habitats at elevations below 20 feet. Most campgrounds remain open year-round despite high summer humidity and occasional flooding during spring rainy seasons.

What to do

Fishing access: Poche's RV Park & Fish-N-Camp maintains five stocked fishing lakes with no license required. "They have 5 fishing lakes here and every spot is on the lake," notes Ioan P. The park rents fishing equipment and has invested in improving fish populations, as James R. confirms: "Their fishing has gotten better."

Hiking trails: The 6,400-acre Chicot State Park offers some of the region's most extensive trail systems. "One of the best and longest loop trails in the state!" shares Josh B. The park combines water and land recreation with wildlife viewing opportunities. Nick U. explains, "I biked most of the paved roads in the state park and was able to go 13 miles without doubling anywhere."

Water recreation: Summer visitors appreciate water activities at multiple parks. At Little Lake Charles Resort, campers enjoy "pool, water slide, water play area mini golf and fishing," according to Mark J. The water facilities provide relief during hot Louisiana summers when temperatures regularly exceed 90°F.

What campers like

Weekend events: Local campgrounds organize regular entertainment options. "They have live entertainment on Saturday nights and installed a new security system," shares James R. about Poche's RV Park. The social atmosphere extends to multiple parks, with Jeff T. adding: "Crazy Cajuns get rowdy on weekends at the clubhouse. Join them you won't regret it."

Nature viewing: Sam Houston Jones State Park provides wildlife observation opportunities along trails and waterways. "If you like Louisiana Wildlife this is the place for you! I saw a couple of lounging alligators, egrets, snapping turtles, deer, and a chipmunk!!!" reports Cat R. The park's diverse ecosystems support varied wildlife viewing within a short drive from Jennings.

Clean facilities: North Campground at Chicot State Park maintains well-kept amenities that campers consistently mention. "The bathrooms were recently updated so they were really nice. Also the laundry facilities were clean!" notes Cat R. Another camper, Pam G., confirms: "Campground has bath house with individual showers."

What you should know

Water quality issues: Campground water systems occasionally present problems. At Myers Landing and RV Park, Andrea warns: "The water smelled very badly like metal and we had to turn it off and use our own tank water since it smelled so yucky. Not sure if that's the case on every camp site."

Seasonal pests: Louisiana's humid climate supports mosquitoes and other insects. Mike V. notes about Chicot State Park: "Negatives are the wasps, ticks, and chiggers." Bringing appropriate repellents proves essential, particularly during warmer months when insect activity increases.

Weekend crowds: Popular parks fill quickly during peak periods. Regarding Sam Houston Jones State Park, the Meandering Life review states: "For the weekend it was full. During the week there were very few campers." Making advance reservations proves particularly important for yurt camping near Jennings, Louisiana, as these specialized accommodations book quickly.

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly water features: Lakeview Park offers water recreation specifically designed for children. Jessica B. shares: "Had such a great and relaxing time! Rented the kayak for an hour multi times. Water is cold and refreshing." The park includes inflatables in their swimming pond that appeal to families with children.

Playground facilities: Several parks include dedicated play areas. Casey L. reports about Sam Houston Jones State Park: "Nice wide hiking/biking trails, lots of water access, beautiful new bridges and a nice big playground." These features help families keep children entertained between water activities.

Cultural experiences: Unique local events provide educational opportunities. "We loved our kids' Mardi Gras weekend here. Lots of cultural fun and activities for kids and family," notes Carrie I. The yurt camping options near Jennings provide families more comfortable accommodations while still accessing these cultural experiences.

Tips from RVers

Site selection considerations: Choose sites based on shade and space requirements. At Palmetto Island State Park, Lisa S. advises: "Sites in the circles at end of campground roads offer the most space and privacy with water and electric." For summer camping, prioritizing shaded sites reduces air conditioning demands.

Leveling requirements: Prepare for uneven terrain at certain parks. The Meandering Life review of Sam Houston Jones State Park notes: "Most of the campground is not level, but nothing bad enough that you can't get level with blocks." Bringing leveling blocks proves essential for RV campers at many locations.

Hookup positioning: Check sewer connection distances before setting up. Cat R. warns about Lakeview Park: "Be sure to bring extra sewer hose, the sewer is a far reach!" This practical detail prevents frustration during setup and ensures proper connections for longer stays.
