South Toledo Bend State Park Campground

    ALMOST PERFECT

This was my first time at this beautiful state park. I will definitely come back! 3 days was not long enough to do everything! Our camper site was #46. It had a very large well kept wooden deck with a picnic table. The camper pad was long and concrete. It was slightly uneven, we used 3 blocks to level it off..There was also a large sand pad if you preferred a tent. A firepit was also there. Many of the other sites also had decks, with the same things available. It had water and electricity, a dump station, and very clean shower/restrooms . Also available were primitive camping sites with amazing views. Oh, did I mention that our site had a very short walk to a dock overlooking the beautiful lake. This dock had room for four boats! There are beautiful biking, and hiking trails, both concrete and dirt. Several play areas for the kids! There was a beach and swimming area, a nature center,, and playgrounds. The camp hosts were amazing and very helpful. The park was super clean, family and pet friendly, and a great price at 28 dollars a night. Happy camping!!

Toledo Bend Recreation Site - MILITARY

    Family Friendly, prime fishing location.

The Army Recreation sight managed by MWR is a very well run campground and boat launch. Making a reservation was easy, and the lady i made the reservation with initially even called to follow up when the weather turned ugly.

Our stay was in one of their Yurts. Though they do have cabins as well as primitive camping options. The yurt was supplied with two bunks, the bottoms being a a full size with the top bunks being twins. Amenities included heating and air conditioning as well as a mini fridge, keurig, and a couple of small drawers and a lamp. The only real complaint i can say i had was some of the linoleum tile was loose inside. Other than that, the yurt was an interesting cross between cabin and tent.

Fishing is also very available, as well as playground, boat launch, boat rentals and R.V. accommodations as well.

We may just go back and try a cabin next time as the temperatures have been getting cold here.

Also be aware, there is a one time pet fee when staying in the cabins and yurts.

South Toledo Bend State Park Campground

Camping, canoeing & kayaking, at S. Toledo Bend State Park, west Louisiana

Nice state park on western boundary of Louisiana along Toledo Bend Reservoir. Camping here is usually quite nice from late Oct through late April. Only (5) undeveloped campsites are available for tents/hammocks only. They have a great view looking out over the huge lake. Each has a picnic table and a fire ring w/ steel grill rack. On weekends you must reserve campsites/cabins for a minimum of two nights when doing online reservations. There is a large number of improved campsites that have water and electrical hook-ups, and quite a few cabins that can be rented, some of which also have a nice view of the lake. Bathhouse was fairly clean whenever I have been there, and has showers, sinks, and flush toilets. I would have given this park's camping area a 5-star rating, but there was no hot water left to take a nice warm shower during my last visit. Toledo Bend Reservoir is the #1 bass fishing lake in America 2 years in a row. Clean water and a few sandy beaches along the two small nearby islands are great for hanging out on when canoeing/kayaking/ boating. Bald Eagles are often seen during late Fall, Winter months, and early Spring. Please note that the raccoons are professional thieves at this state park, so you need to put your food away at night.

South Toledo Bend State Park Campground

    Excellent Primitive Experience

Primitive campsites are clean, include a picnic table and fire pit, and are nestled on a bluff overlooking Toledo Bend. The park offers a comfort station within walking distance of the primitive sites that includes air-conditioned bathrooms and showers, coin-operated laundry, and water fountains. Multiple trails, a boat launch, fish cleaning station, swimming area, and more! We had a great experience and plan to return as often as we can. I couldn’t expect any more for less than $20/night.

    Indian Creek Recreation Area

    Great Weekend Getaway!

Indian Creek is only a couple hours away from our home, so it’s an ideal spot for a weekend getaway together! My husband and I have stayed here twice—first, at site 52 and then at site 56. We had to call the campground prior to our stay to get a gate code as they lock the gate at night, but that was simple enough and made us feel safe. During each of our stays, the campground was nearly full, so we counted ourselves lucky with the sites we had reserved.

We have a 21’ travel trailer and barely fit it and our Toyota Tundra in site 52. The lake was visible when standing inside the camper (driver side) but not from our chairs by the fire. There was a pretty steep drop off from the concrete pad to the ground level forcing us to put our outdoor rug on the ground. We appreciated the shade, two handy trees for our hammock, the ducks on the lake, and the sound of the wind blowing through the tall grass. We had neighbors one night in site 54 which is very close, but they kept to themselves so we didn’t feel encroached upon. Site 52 was also a little low, so it was a bit soggy from rains that fell the week before we had arrived.

After exploring the campground on this first trip, we decided that site 56 would be perfect for us. We felt like “kings of the mountain” during our second stay at Indian Creek as we were at the top of a hill. Site 56 had a HUGE backyard leading down to the lake. The view from our chairs by the fire and the picnic table were excellent. There were lots of trees to hang our hammock from, too.

Other sites that we found appealing were 13, 16, 45, 57, 95, 99, and 100. We really prefer a nice view, separation from neighboring sites, and privacy when selecting a site, so for us 56 was ideal. All sites had concrete pads, picnic tables, and fire rings but no lantern posts. The first loop of the campground (Susan’s Loop) seemed much quieter than the others (perhaps because it was further from the playground and little beach area). The beach areas seem really nice for camping during warmer weather. We thoroughly enjoyed hiking the trail and saw lots of deer tracks, ducks, and squirrels. There were many families camping with children, but the campground has a nice, quiet vibe that we really enjoyed. There is a Dollar General just a few minutes away as well as a well-appointed grocery store should you need any last minute items. We cannot wait to visit Indian Creek again!

Cypress Bend Park-Toledo Bend Lake Sabine River Auth

    BEAUTIFUL SUNSETS

We stayed at site #3, which was pretty much full sun. But, it was on the water with access to the water. Full hookups, concrete pads. Very clean, but dated restrooms. Laundry room was available. Boat launch, fishing, beautiful playground, gorgeous flower beds. No grocery on grounds. The grounds people were busy putting out Christmas decorations! Seems that they have a huge beautiful display every year.

Guide to Leesville

Cabins near Leesville, Louisiana dot the shores of Toledo Bend Reservoir, the largest man-made lake in the southern United States with 1,200 miles of shoreline. The region sits at approximately 175 feet above sea level with a humid subtropical climate featuring hot summers and mild winters. Cabin rental options range from basic accommodations with minimal amenities to luxury waterfront units with full kitchens, typically requiring 1-3 months advance booking during peak fishing season.

What to do

Fishing from dedicated piers: South Toledo Bend State Park Campground offers multiple docks where families can fish directly from shore. "The park has docks for fishing and boat launch, and a fish cleaning station. There's a nice playground too," notes Lori H. about the park's angling amenities.

Kayaking on the reservoir: North Toledo Bend State Park Campground provides direct lake access ideal for paddlers. The protected coves offer calmer waters for beginners while open areas challenge experienced kayakers. According to Dion B., "Great paddling and boating on the lake. Fished a little out of a kayak, but it was a little tough to stay in position to fish."

Hiking natural trails: Indian Creek Recreation Area features well-maintained trails through pine forests. "We thoroughly enjoyed hiking the trail and saw lots of deer tracks, ducks, and squirrels," reports Layla D., highlighting the wildlife viewing opportunities available while exploring on foot.

What campers like

Spacious, wooded sites: Toledo Bend cabin rentals often feature private, shaded settings. "Campsites are mostly all heavily wooded, and spacious. Plenty of room between sites," writes Lori H. about South Toledo Bend's layout, which offers privacy between accommodations.

Clean facilities: Cypress Bend State Rec Area maintains high standards for its bathhouses and common areas. "The park is beautifully maintained and set on the edge of Toledo Bend Lake, offering some truly scenic views, especially at sunset," reports a camper named mediks, highlighting the upkeep that enhances visitor experiences.

Waterfront views: Cabin renters consistently praise the lakefront perspectives available at many Toledo Bend properties. "Site 56 had a HUGE backyard leading down to the lake. The view from our chairs by the fire and the picnic table were excellent," shares Layla D. about Indian Creek Recreation Area, demonstrating the premium nature of waterfront accommodations.

What you should know

Limited cell service: Many cabins near Leesville experience spotty mobile coverage. Visitors should download maps and important information before arrival, especially for cabins at more remote locations like South Toledo Bend.

Booking timelines: Reservations for cabin rentals should be made 2-3 months in advance for summer weekends and 3-4 months ahead for holiday periods. For military families, Toledo Bend Recreation Site accepts reservations up to 12 months in advance.

Supply planning: South Toledo Bend State Park Campground is particularly isolated from conveniences. "The closest store (gas station) with any necessities is about a 20min drive each way. But we loved the solitude," explains Erin A., emphasizing the importance of bringing all needed supplies.

Tips for camping with families

Beach access for children: Bundick Lake Retreat offers a family-friendly swimming area with dedicated beach zones. According to Abby F., "We loved the pool, game room, and mini golf course, which kept our family entertained for hours."

Wildlife education opportunities: Lotus Camp in Kisatchie National Forest provides encounters with local ecosystems. "This really is a great place for the family and all the family fun," shares reviewer N.I., highlighting the educational value for children.

Playground proximity: Request cabins near playground facilities if traveling with younger children. "The park offers a fantastic blend of outdoor and indoor activities, from mini golf and pickleball to a well-equipped game room," notes Abby F. about Bundick Lake's recreational options for various age groups.

Tips from RVers

Site selection for large units: RVers with longer trailers should request specific sites at Toledo Bend areas. "We have a 21' travel trailer and barely fit it and our Toyota Tundra in site 52," cautions Layla D. about Indian Creek, providing valuable insight for travelers with larger rigs.

Hookup availability: Artesian Springs Resort accommodates RVers with full-service connections. "Has 30 and 50 amp connections, sewer and water hook up. Tent and cabin camping also," confirms Tammy B., detailing the site utilities available.

Road condition awareness: Many access roads to Toledo Bend cabin areas feature rough surfaces. "The biggest problem with this park is the roads. I'm used to potholes living in Louisiana but it isn't ideal for narrow roads with a large camper," warns Callie S. about South Toledo Bend, highlighting the challenges for drivers of larger recreational vehicles.
