Best Equestrian Camping near Hammond, LA

Bogue Chitto State Park Campground offers equestrian facilities approximately 17 miles from Hammond, Louisiana. The park maintains extensive bridle paths suitable for riders of all experience levels, providing direct access to scenic woodland terrain with well-marked trails. Proper tie-outs are required at all campsites as dedicated horse corrals are not available. The park features multiple camping loops with Uplands offering full hookup sites while Bottomlands provides electric and water. Sites include gravel pads, picnic tables, fire rings, and BBQ pits. Recent visitors note the campground is well-maintained with clean facilities and ample space between sites for horse trailers.

Trail riders access more than 14 miles of designated horse trails throughout the 1,786-acre park. Sweetwater Campground RV Ranch in nearby Loranger serves as an additional horse-friendly option with trailer parking and trail access. Water access points for horses exist throughout the trail system, though riders should confirm seasonal availability. The park's terrain varies from wooded hills to river bottomlands, creating diverse riding experiences. Gravel roads throughout both campgrounds accommodate horse trailers, though some spots in Bottomlands can become muddy after heavy rain. Reservations are recommended, particularly during weekends and peak seasons when equestrian sites fill quickly.

    Farr Park RV Camground

    Close to Downtown

County equestrian and RV park close to downtown. Stayed here recently while attending an LSU football game. They have a shuttle that provides round trips to the stadium. Nothing fancy about Farr Park, just convenient if you love horses and football.

    Farr Park RV Camground

    Great for horse people

Not bad. It's connected to an equestrian center. If horses are your thing it's perfect. 2 miles from LSU, 3 miles from Baton Rouge, biking trails along Mississippi River levee. Water and electric, dump station, and a bathhouse. The bad... not many trees or wildlife other than horses. The bathhouse could use some work.

    Farr Park RV Camground

One of the better RV parks in BR Area

One of the better RV parks in the BR area (there's not many close to town).  Has electric and water hookups, but no sewer hookup.  The Mississippi River is nearby. There is a paved bike path on top of the river levee that you can ride all the way to downtown Baton Rouge.  It is only 3 miles from LSU campus.  Some people stay here to tailgate for LSU football games.

Farr Park is part of the Baton Rouge Parks and Recreation system.  It is also an equestrian (horse) center.  There are stables and riding arenas near the campground.

There is a dump station available.  The dump station connection for your sewer hose is at a 45 degree angle and a bit above ground level.  This creates sags in your hose.  Also, there is no way to secure or screw in your connection to the sump station.  The station does have a concrete pad and non-potable water.  You can use the dump station for free if you are a camper.  Non-campers can pay a $10 fee to dump.

    Farr Park RV Camground

    Close to LSU

I would suggest BREC Farr Equestrian RV Park if you are interested in being close Baton Rouge or LSU. A typical fairgrounds type camping area. Sites have electric and water. Remote dump site available. Bike path trailhead is there, with extensive pathways on the levee.

    Farr Park RV Camground

    Spacious with Horse Views

This campground is so romantic with coral sunsets and country vibes. Spots are spacious and not crowded so you can spread out. Great paths for walking. Its hot but the bugs are not overwhelming. Close to the college and downtown. Perfect views of the horses I could watch them all day. 30/50 amp electric, water, pull through sites. No sewage but there is a dump station to empty on way out.  Bathrooms have restrooms and showers available. 8/10.

    Land-O-Pines Family Campground

    Pleasant campground

Land-O-Pines is a nice private RV park near Folsom and Covington. We stayed two nights because my daughter was in a horse competition at a nearby horse farm. The sites are mostly shady. The streets and sites are gravel and can get a little muddy in spots after a rain. The park was clean and quiet, and the staff was friendly. About half the sites are for permanent users.

Stayed in pull-through campsite C69 which was shady and level. It was a gravel site. There was enough parking for my 34 ft TT and truck. Neighbors are nearby by not on top of you. The site included: picnic table on gravel, no fire ring. Utilities: 20/50A electric near the middle. The 20A receptacle looked like it had some minor burn marks. Water next to power pole, good pressure. Sewer near power pole with 4 non screw-on fitting.

AT&T had 2 bars of LTE and Verizon full bars of LTE service. AT&T Speedtest: 30.8 Mbps down, 3.6 Mbps up. Verizon Speedtest: 4.5 Mbps down, 11.8 Mbps up. WiFi available, but did not use. Required a login.

Would stay here again. We camped at Land-O-Pines Family Campground in a Travel Trailer.

    Bogue Chitto State Park Campground

    DON'T FEED THE GATORS

Literally, don't feed the gators. There were signs everywhere. Apparently many people don't heed the signs. When my hubby rustled a bag, several alligators swam right up to our site! Our campsite #101 was right on one of the many lakes in the park. Not much room, but nice enough for looking at the alligators and fishing. No sewer hookup, but electric and water. Dump station was a short drive away. We were in the lower area campsites, which were prone to flash flooding. We actually left a day early due to prediction of rain. The bath house was a short walk away and very clean. Camp hosts actually drove around and checked on guests. There are wonderful hiking, biking, and horse trails. Canoeing and kayaking was a short drive away. Did I mention that there are free mini libraries??

Guide to Hammond

Bogue Chitto State Park offers horseback riding opportunities with 14 miles of trails winding through 1,786 acres of Louisiana wilderness. Located 17 miles from Hammond, the park provides varying terrain from wooded hills to riverside paths. The campground features multiple loops with different hookup options and can accommodate trailers at most sites, though the access road condition varies seasonally.

What to do

Wildlife viewing opportunities: At Bogue Chitto State Park Campground, visitors frequently spot diverse wildlife. "We saw plenty of wildlife such as turkey, deer, rabbits, turtles, alligators and birds," reports Tiffany M. The lakes in the lower section of the park attract numerous alligators, as Larry notes: "This place is crawling with gators in the lower portion on the lakes. Hey this is south Louisiana."

River recreation: The Bogue Chitto River provides cooling summer recreation options beyond trail riding. "The river offers a nice swimming hole during the summer," shares Tiffany M. Another visitor confirms "river tubing available" as a popular warm-weather activity that attracts families and groups.

Trail systems beyond riding: Equestrian camping near Hammond includes access to hiking and biking paths. James L. found Bogue Chitto offers more than just horse trails: "Hiking trails, equestrian trails, tubing, camping... they've got it all." Many trails connect directly to camping areas, allowing for convenient day excursions without driving.

What campers like

Water features: The multiple water bodies throughout Farr Park RV Campground and surrounding area provide scenic camping. Michael T. notes "Bike path trailhead is there, with extensive pathways on the levee," making it possible to ride or walk along waterways. For horse owners camping in the region, these pathways offer additional riding opportunities beyond designated horse trails.

Equestrian amenities: At Sweetwater Campground RV Ranch in Loranger, horse owners appreciate additional options like wagon rides. Charmon K. shares: "Enjoyed my time here. Peaceful setting with a pool! Wagon ride for kids, pond, ducks, mule was cute!" The facility provides alternative equestrian experiences beyond trail riding.

Spacious sites: Larger sites accommodate horse trailers at designated equestrian campgrounds. Reagan S. found Bogue Chitto provides "relaxing stream front site nice wooden patio firepit and bbq" with enough room for equestrian equipment. Sites numbered in the 120s frequently offer better water access with adequate parking for trucks and trailers.

What you should know

Alligator safety: Campers with horses should be aware of wildlife hazards. Cat R. warns about Bogue Chitto: "DON'T FEED THE GATORS. Literally, don't feed the gators. There were signs everywhere... When my hubby rustled a bag, several alligators swam right up to our site!" Horse owners must maintain proper control of animals near water.

Seasonal flooding concerns: Low-lying areas in equestrian campgrounds near Hammond can experience water issues. Cat R. notes they "were in the lower area campsites, which were prone to flash flooding. We actually left a day early due to prediction of rain." Horse owners should request higher elevation sites when possible, particularly during Louisiana's rainy seasons.

Site selection strategy: For Land-O-Pines Family Campground, David B. advises: "The streets and sites are gravel and can get a little muddy in spots after a rain." When booking equestrian sites, request information about ground conditions, especially if traveling during wet periods.

Tips for camping with families

Water activities: Families appreciate the swimming opportunities at equestrian campgrounds near Hammond. Therese A. found Bogue Chitto especially child-friendly: "The grandkids loved the splash pad/water slide and easy access to the river." This provides alternative recreation when children need breaks from horse activities.

Multi-activity options: New Orleans RV Resort & Marina offers families diverse recreation beyond horse trails. Stuart K. notes: "Nice & easy clean resort. They pick up your trash by noon, LP pickup/refill, shower hot, store, pool, hot tub, sitting areas with rockers, laundry, dog area and great restaurant/sport bar." These amenities support longer family stays.

Seasonal events: David D. recommends checking holiday schedules: "Great site..we went for Halloween weekend and there were alot of activities and trick or treating for the kids..great campsite great memories." Many equestrian campgrounds near Hammond host special events that combine horse activities with holiday celebrations.

Tips from RVers

Site specifics: At Bogue Chitto State Park, Reagan S. recommends "site 126 relaxing stream front site" for its "nice wooden patio firepit and bbq." He notes "full hookup in uperlanls, just water and electric in bottomland," which helps RVers requiring full hookups for longer stays with horses.

Ground conditions: David B. at Land-O-Pines notes his stay was in a "pull-through campsite C69 which was shady and level. It was a gravel site. There was enough parking for my 34 ft TT and truck." Horse owners with larger rigs should request information about site dimensions to ensure adequate space for both RV and horse trailer.
