What to do
Levee walking trails: The New Orleans West KOA in River Ridge has easy access to riverside trails. Local service opportunities: While staying at New Orleans West KOA, consider community service activities. "I stayed there while I was doing some community service in New Orleans... Meeting people out there and hearing some of their stories was really eye opening for me," explains Sam M., who recommends this as a meaningful activity during your visit.
Swamp wildlife viewing: The boardwalk trails at Tickfaw State Park Campground showcase southern Louisiana ecosystems. "There is a ADA boardwalk trail that is very nice (especially for the kiddos) with a covered picnic area. The park offers a nature center that is really nice and they have animal demonstrations where you are able to really learn about Louisiana wildlife," explains Paula W.

What you should know
Pest protection: Mosquitoes are prevalent at most cabin locations year-round. "Even on December 31, though, there were swarms of mosquitos, the only reason why Grand Isle gets 4 stars instead of 5," warns Art Z. at Grand Isle State Park Campground.
Weather considerations: Louisiana's subtropical climate affects camping conditions. "The sites are a bit tight, only RV spots have a fire pit. Showers are well kept but the place smells musty," reports one visitor about accommodations in the area. Heavy rains can impact site conditions at many locations.
Noise factors: Urban-adjacent cabin locations may experience varied noise levels. "As stated in other reviews this KOA is close to town and very convenient. But it's noisy. Traffic, trains, airplanes and construction noise, you've got it all here. Bring earplugs if your tent camping," advises Jim H.
Tips for camping with families
Activity planning: Hidden Oaks Family Campground organizes seasonal events for families. "This park looks like a blast to come to on holidays for the family. They already have Christmas decorations up, a train ride ready and more! No doubt a great place to bring the family," notes Robert M., who stopped by while traveling through.
Swimming options: Several cabin locations include water features for children. "The campground is split into 2 sides - primitive and RV. A general store sits in the middle for any necessities. We setup our tent area in the primitive area near the river/beach area," reports Shaun B., who enjoyed the riverside setting.
Wildlife education: Take advantage of nature programs at state parks. "The nature center that is really nice and they have animal demonstrations where you are able to really learn about Louisiana wildlife and touch the animals as well," explains one visitor to Tickfaw State Park.
Tips from RVers
Site selection: When booking cabin or RV sites, verify specific features. "When you first get off the Interstate, the area looks abandoned and a little sketchy, but it is ok. Apple Maps guided me right to the park," explains David B. about navigating to Fireside RV Resort, where he found "a level concrete pad" with utilities.
Senior discounts: Louisiana state parks offer significant price reductions for older visitors. "When we booked the reservation we used the 20% military discount but found out upon arrival that LA State Parks give a 50% discount for seniors 62+ and you don't have to be a state resident," shares MickandKarla W.
Laundry availability: Several cabin locations provide laundry facilities, sometimes at no cost. "Free laundry is a nice perk but do it early (I was first at 7 am and it piled up soon after)," advises Lee D., who appreciated this amenity during their coastal stay.
