Best RV Parks & Resorts near Grayson Lake

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Grayson Lake State Park Campground provides RV sites with 50/30-amp electric and water hookups on asphalt pads up to 48 feet long. Valley Breeze RV Campground in Grayson offers full hookups including electric, water and sewer for overnight stays, while Oasis Point RV Resort features full-service RV sites near a man-made lake with recreational amenities. Carter Caves State Resort Park Campground, approximately 20 miles from Grayson Lake, accommodates larger RVs with 50/30-amp electric, water, and sewer connections, though the campground operates seasonally from April through October. "Most of the sites don't have a great space and many RV spots had front tires suspended about a foot in the air to make level."

Several campgrounds in the region have limited cell service, with Grayson Lake reporting 4 bars on Verizon but spotty coverage for other carriers. Dump station access can be problematic during peak checkout times, particularly at Grayson Lake where the station's position creates traffic congestion on Sundays. Many RV sites throughout the area feature gravel pads with varying degrees of levelness. A visitor noted, "Coming into the campground, there are no signs that say campground. It just looks like the turn for the golf course and you may think you are lost until you get past the golf course entrance." Reservation availability varies significantly by location, with some parks booking months in advance while others maintain sites for overnight travelers.

    Greenbo Lake State Resort Park

    It’s pretty nice

A lot of their sites have full hook up but not all of them. Read the details of the sites when booking. Some of the sites have really steep grades and aren’t big rig friendly.

Check in was a breeze had out car tags on our post.

They do have a full-time camp host on site.

I didn’t use the shower 🚿 house but they do have a couple on the grounds.

They have a putt putt course but bring your own putter and ball.

There is Verizon service but it’s spotty.

They do have WiFi but it’s very slow and not secure.

Place is very pet friendly. The people we have met here are great.

Sites are wide but really close together.

    Paintsville Lake State Park Campground

Nice lake, rec area and campground all nestled together

Spent the night here passing through. I did make a reservation just in case but there were a couple sites open. Nice, small campground, most sites are back in but there are a few pull through sites. The staff were friendly and the campground seems maintained fairly well. No wifi and Verizon is touchy. Out in the recreation area I had one bar and LTE though the data seemed pretty good. My site was right at the beginning of the campground. Inside my camper I could only get a signal if I put my phone in the window. The signal was good enough to stream and FaceTime but if I took it out of the window I’d lose signal.

The sites are nice and not on top of each other. They are a nice finer type gravel and mostly level. Big patio area with a picnic table and fire pit. Some of the sites at the front will give you a decent view of the lake, site 18 being the best I believe, I was in site 20.

It’s open year round according to the website. Not sure how big rig friendly it is and I couldn’t find any information on the website, I’d call first. I don’t recall seeing any 5th wheel or motor homes back there.

Overall, very nice campground and I would visit again. There is an 1850’s mountain house in the park just prior to the entrance to the campground/recreation area. There is a fee and you’ll have to check the hours. I forgot to take a picture but the song on the gift shop door said certain days by appointment only and I think Friday thru Sunday they were open for a period of time.

    Wildcat Camping and Fishing

    Very Nice Place

We have been here for a little over a month now. Nice level gravel sites with grass around them. Full hookups 30/50A at each site. Wifi. Could accommodate at least 40+ foot 5th wheels. There is a paylake with small shelter areas, playground, horseshoe pit, game room, community gathering area, store with snacks, drinks, tackle and other items. There are restrooms, but no showers or laundry. Beautiful area. About 11 miles to Paintsville, which has all the stores you'd need. Some closer convenience stores. Johnny and Regina, the owners, couldn't be any nicer. Very good monthly rates. Can receive mail and packages.

One-Night Adventure: Our Shakedown Trip in the New Travel Trailer

Campsite Review for Site 6 – Gateway to Wayne National Forest

Our recent camping trip at this campground was an excellent way to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Wayne National Forest. The serene forest setting provided a perfect backdrop for a relaxing outdoor adventure, with the campground offering all the basics needed for a comfortable stay.

We stayed at Site 6 in our travel trailer, enjoying the ease of a pull-through site. Although the water and electric hookups are on the opposite side unless you drive through the loop the wrong way, this setup has an unexpected benefit—it faces directly toward the woods. This orientation allowed us to savor the tranquility of the forest, adding a layer of privacy and a more intimate connection with nature.

While the sites are decently sized, they are closely positioned with minimal separation, which might limit privacy in other areas. However, the majestic surroundings of Wayne National Forest more than make up for this. The proximity to hiking trails, wildlife sightings, and the peaceful ambiance of the trees create an immersive experience that’s hard to beat.

All in all, this campground is a fantastic base for exploring Wayne National Forest. The combination of basic amenities, convenient access, and the enchanting forest environment makes it a great spot for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

    The Ole Cornfield

Great place to unwind and enjoy the river.

The campground is brand new and it has new bath/shower houses.  It has 10 RV sites and riverside tent sites.  The sites are level and pull through with 50 amp service.  There is city water available and a dump station.  Very clean place and the staff are great to work with.  They have kayaking at the campground or shuttle service if you bring your own kayak.  The ride from the dam down to the campground is beautiful and serene.  It is great for beginning kayakers.  The tent sites along the river are so peaceful with the river running below you.  There is a lot to do in the area with Cave Run Lake for water adventures and Lockegee Rock and the Sheltowee Trail for hiking.  The Licking River has several fish species from the fun to catch bluegill to the Muskellunge.  This is a must see place that I will definitely return to.

Lake View Campground — Beech Fork State Park

    Beautiful and secluded

We visited in the end of October 2021. The colors and the views were spectacular. The drive into the park was very curvy mountain back roads. The site included a fire pit with grill and a picnic table. There was a fair amount of space between sites. Approximately 50-75 feet apart. The bath house was nice but could use a little refreshening. There are many activities including a shooting range, frisbee golf course, swimming pool, playground just to name a few. With Verizon as our service provider no cell signal was available at the park. Overall, we give 3 stars. Minus one star for no cell service and minus another star due to maintenance. Overall, very nice park.

    Grayson Lake State Park Campground

    Very Nice State Park!

Grayson Lake State Park- East Kentucky. So, we had reservations for Carter Caves, but they canceled on me due to redoing the campground. I was fortunate to find a site at Grayson Lake for Wednesday & Thursday night.

This is a very nice campground at a small state park roughly 10 miles from Carter Caves. Most of it is campground & golf course, with 2 trails.

Grayson Lake has 71 sites with water& electric. There's a dump station. There's 2 playgrounds. 2 bathhouses. They are on the high side of state park clean. I didn't see any spider webs or bugs.

The area was meticulously mowed & clean- no trash at the site or fire pit. The staff at check were friendly & helpful.

We were at site 19 close to the bathhouse. A nice site, but that row had full sun. There were many nice sites, but many had a serious incline. Stay away from site 39 - that has a good view of the wastewater treatment plant!

Grayson Lake is part of a larger area managed by the US Army Corp of Engineers. There's a lot of boating & fishing. We had a good time & if in the area would stay again!

    Sandy Springs Campground

Amazing experience at Sandy Springs Campground

Sandy Springs Campground is this awesome little gem on the Ohio River. It is a small family owned and family oriented Campground with some amazing views of the foothills of Ohio and Kentucky. The Campground is super clean and well maintained. They have full hookups and 30/50 Amp service. There are pull through sites and river front sites. They have several rental options and the coolest house boat over looking the river with a wrap around porch. They have really nice shower and laundry facilities. There is a pretty cool camp store there too. The best part is the friendly people and atmosphere. The owners work very hard here. They take very good care of the guests and there are always plenty of activities on the weekends and holidays. The prices are definitely affordable and can't be beat anywhere I have stayed before. Couldn't recommend a better place to stay on your next camping adventure.

Guide to Grayson Lake

Campgrounds near Grayson Lake offer varied terrain options from riverside flat spaces to more rocky ground across eastern Kentucky. The region experiences warm summers with temperatures often reaching 85°F and cool falls with temperatures dropping into the 40s at night. Most campgrounds in the area sit at elevations between 600-900 feet, creating moderate hiking challenges and decent fishing opportunities.

What to do

Fishing in the river: At The Ole Cornfield, campers can fish in the Licking River which is 1-2 feet deep in this area. "The Licking River has several fish species from the fun to catch bluegill to the Muskellunge," notes a reviewer. Another camper mentions, "Plenty of spots to fish."

Kayaking adventures: Multiple campgrounds offer kayak rentals or shuttle services. "They have kayaks for rent at the campground or you can bring your own. They shuttle you up to the dam and it takes a couple of hours to get back down to their campground," explains a camper at The Ole Cornfield. Equipment rental costs typically range from $20-40 per day.

Cave exploration: Carter Caves State Resort Park offers guided cave tours for various skill levels. "The park is amazing and I have no idea how it took me 39yrs to find it so close to home. The caves are absolutely amazing and the park has some of the best natural bridges I have ever seen," writes one visitor. Tours generally run 1-2 hours and require closed-toe shoes.

What campers like

Spacious campsites: Many campers appreciate the ample room at certain locations. At The Ole Cornfield, one camper noted, "We were able to put up a 20 x 10 canopy outside of our camper canopy with plenty of extra room. Lots of space for the kids to run."

Clean facilities: Sheltowee RV Park & Cabins earns praise for its upkeep. "The campground is very well maintained. It's quite and tucked away. Nature trails, ponds for relaxing and watching the wildlife or fishing," writes one reviewer. Another notes it's "kept up to date."

Swimming opportunities: Oasis Point RV Resort offers unique water recreation. "They have a large pond that has a nice beach, a huge slide and a zip line. They have kayaks, paddle boards and floats first come first serve," shares one camper. For families with children, this makes a significant difference in summer months.

What you should know

Extended hookup distances: At Carter Caves, be prepared for utilities that may be far from your parking pad. "The only issue was that some of the sites were around 50 ft from the electric hook up. Thankfully we were able to switch spots instead of renting an extension cord," warns one camper.

Varying pad surfaces: While some campgrounds feature level concrete pads, others require more setup work. At Outpost Campground & RV Park, a visitor noted, "The pull through sites were all flat and oriented well. We were fully set up in 15 mins."

Train noise: Some campgrounds experience railroad disruptions. At Robert Newlon Airpark RV Park, a reviewer warns, "The only real problem comes with the train tracks right here. The trains are close and do blow their whistle for crossing by the office."

Tips for camping with families

Water play options: Multiple campgrounds offer safe areas for children to enjoy water. At The Ole Cornfield, a grandparent shared, "My grandkids loved playing in the river catching crawdads and tadpoles. Perfect for wading."

Playground access: Some campgrounds have dedicated play areas. A visitor at Outpost noted, "There is a great, centrally located playground where the kids were able to run around after being in the truck for eight hours."

Educational activities: Carter Caves offers nature programs suitable for various ages. A camper recommends, "Grab a ranger-guided tour and learn something! Great for the kids!" Tour schedules typically run daily during summer months with fewer options in shoulder seasons.

Tips from RVers

Check hookup positions: Before booking rv camping near Grayson Lake, verify utility locations. As one Carter Caves camper warned, "You will need extra water hose and extension cords to get hooked up in a lot of the sites."

Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds require additional equipment for proper setup. A visitor at Valley Breeze RV Campground observed the well-maintained grounds but noted leveling was still necessary for proper RV positioning.

Overnight restrictions: Not all RV parks near Grayson Lake accept extended stays. One camper at Valley Breeze reported, "I was going to be in the area for 5 days. I went to the office, asked for 4 nights, I have a 2021 travel trailer. He said 'overnight only'."
