Canal Campground near Cadiz, Kentucky sits at roughly 370 feet above sea level in the Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area. The region experiences humid summers with temperatures often exceeding 90°F and mild winters where freezing temperatures are common overnight. Most campgrounds in the area close during winter months, with limited services available from November through March.
What to do
Trail riding access: Wranglers Campground connects to over 100 miles of designated horse trails throughout Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area. "Fun experience staying with all the horses! I didn't really know it was a thing to bring horses to camp and ride them on the trails! Loved it," notes Tessa C. from Wranglers Campground.
Lake activities: Lake Barkley State Resort Park offers multiple water recreation options. "Lake Barkley State Park offers so many activities and is right on the edge of Land Between The Lakes that I have been going to both for years and still not gotten to all of the sites available," shares Shelly S. from Lake Barkley State Resort Park.
Kayaking opportunities: Cravens Bay provides direct water access for paddlers. "Great spot for kayaking and tent camping. We were the only ones there so it was perfect! Highly recommend for tent camping," says Benjamin C. about his experience at Cravens Bay, noting the secluded nature of this paddling destination.
What campers like
Privacy between sites: Canal Campground offers well-spaced camping areas. "The campground is big enough for golf carts and small enough to walk to the beach from any side. One of my favorites," shares Chris O. about Canal Campground.
Swimming options: Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park provides both lake and pool swimming. "Great place to visit. Is beautiful with a lot of walking trails and things to do. In summer for swimming and rental boats, paddle boats and some battery powered boats," explains J K., highlighting the variety of water recreation options available.
Group camping facilities: Colson Hollow Group Camp accommodates larger gatherings with waterfront access. "We had this reserved for a large group and it was great! Tons of room to spread out especially with the water as low as it was. Vault toilets on site and a few fire rings," notes Matt S. from Colson Hollow Group Camp.
What you should know
Site leveling challenges: Many campsites in the area require significant leveling equipment. "Beautiful area! Really nice swimming beach, hiking trails, and campground. Paved sites, most with plenty of shade. Only reason I don't give campground a 5 is due to the very sloped sites. Most are very difficult to level up," advises John R. about Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park.
Weather considerations: Summer heat can be intense with limited shade at some locations. "We went there for the night as we was driving through. They had a girl in there by herself and it was her first day and she didn't not know how to do stuff in there and all sites are off and not even," reports Randy Jessica M.
Seasonal facility limitations: Many campgrounds reduce services during off-season periods. "We camped in off-season and the place was quite empty. Camp host told us it was always pretty quiet. Sites are close together, most with a pitch," shares Lynn A.
Tips for camping with families
Beach access options: KOA Campground Kentucky Lakes Prizer Point offers family-friendly swimming. "This KOA is situated on a beautiful lake. We went over Memorial Day Weekend so it was a packed house. Our waterfront site was beautiful, and all the kids loved the zero entry children's pool," reports Alicia C. from KOA Campground Kentucky Lakes Prizer Point.
Pack entertainment: Limited cellular service affects many camping areas, so bring offline activities. "We enjoyed the amenities that came with our stay. The lagoon was fun, and we enjoyed it, could use a lil underside cleaning and inflation maintenance. Bathhouses clean, kiddie/outdoor pool nice for adults too," notes Marie G.
Check site locations: Request sites away from bathhouse lighting if tent camping. "Site 7 was a good site, but the lights from the bathroom interior are blinding from this site at night. We hung a bath towel over the tent to help block that when people opened the door," advises Cherri H.
Tips from RVers
Extension cord requirements: Many electrical hookups are positioned far from pads. "Well kept, no sewer hookup on sites, bath house clean, electric far from pads - bring extension cord," warns holly S. from Lake Barkley State Resort Park.
Site selection strategies: Check campground maps for pull-through availability. "Drawbacks: Sites 49-51 are mislabeled online. Booked a pullthru spot on 49 but it wasn't. Campground was pretty full and we weren't offered a lot to correct that the website was wrong," cautions Tessa C.
Leveling equipment needs: Pack substantial leveling blocks for many area campgrounds. "Enjoyed our stay. Bring quite a bit of leveling materials as the sites are very unlevel. 1 dump station and an older but usable bath house. The road to come in was narrow but we'll marked. Very shaded and decently spaced out," advises Cheyanne S.
