    Pine Haven Retreat

    Nice rural overnight stay

We spent one night here (May 10, 2022). It was a nice CG for our cross country trip needs. There was one other camper (long term). The CG is all grass with a gravel entry/exit road. We had our pick of back-in sites or pull through– we chose a back-in. We did not have time to visit the office, clubhouse or showers. The CG is next to a rest stop on the west side and farm fields to the south and east. There is traffic noise from Hwy 50, but no bother. Cell phone reception was great.

Thank you goes to the management for allowing us to use our credit card for one night. Cash or check is preferred for short stays.

    Triple J RV Park

    Good for overnight

We called ahead to see if they had sites available for the night. Arrived just before the office closed at 7pm. Got a pull-through full-hookups site. The campsite pads are level, nice and wide, gravel like the roads, with wide grassy/dirt/gravel areas between and beautiful mature shade trees everywhere. Also several friendly cats acting as camp hosts, welcoming us at the office when we checked in, greeting us every time we stepped out of our rig, and checking out all the campsites and trees regularly. ☺️ Our site had a picnic table and a clay/Terra cotta statue of a bear eating honey, with a hole in his belly as a small fire ring. Most sites had a covered picnic table. Full hookups worked fine.

Bathrooms were ok; dead crickets on the floor.

    We would stay here again.

    Creek Side Resort

Not bad. Not bad at all.

The good things are the nice people who run the campground, the little store they have with all kinds of camping and RV stuff. They have a little pond with a dock and a paddle boat. Showers and restrooms are clean and private.

It's not a scenic show-stopper. Gravel lots, but most are pull-through and easy to use.

We stayed in our pop-up camper that fell apart during a super intense storm. Not the campground's fault, but scared the tar out of us. They were nice enough to let me store the camper for a little over a week until I could come back with tools and parts to repair it.

Super nice people. Nice town nearby. Great place to stay if you're going to be in Hays.

    Fossil Creek RV Park

    It’s an OK place

I put 4 stars because they have laundry and WiFi included on their price. The spots are mostly leveled. The office is at the end but if you come late you can pay on a envelope. It was almost empty when I came by. They have hot showers and full hook ups. The good thing is that is just 2 min from the highway 70.

    Pratt County Veterans Memorial Park

Nice park, beautiful area, good amenities

We just bought a travel trailer, and this campground was recommended to us as a good place to stop on the way back home by an employee.

There are 12 gravel pull thru sites with 50, 30, and 20 amp service. Each site also has water, a fire pit with a grate, and a nice picnic table (the kind made of plastic coated wire mesh, if you understand what I mean). There are lots of trash receptacles, an RV dump, and flush toilets, and all this is located on a pretty little lake that gets lots of anglers out on these earthen piers. All for $15 per nite, or $5 per nite for tent campers or RVers without hookups.

The local sheriff's deputy drove through several times while we were there. Payment is on the honor system. There is what looks like a boardwalk path through a wildlife area, but it was closed during our visit.

All in all, a great place to hook up and enjoy some AC in our rig on a sweltering, humid July evening!

    Lyons City Campground

    Free camping

This is a free campground with electricity and dump station. There is a time limit of 5 days. Gravel road and gravel back ins. No picnic tables. There are men's and women's restrooms with showers. Not real clean but adequate. I would recommend someone to stay there.

    Greensburg rv

    $4 per star

If need to stop and want a full hook-up for $20, give this place a try. The camp ground manager, Monica, was very helpful and proactive. She ensured we had a 50 amp FHU pull-thru. There is not much around so you better be self sufficient. There are several gas stations, a small Dillon's grocery and a Family Dollar store. There is a road on the backside of the campground and a large open field to walk your dogs if you have them. We are going back through the area in Feb and will stay here again, but not sure what that looks like in a Kansas winter.

    Excellent municipal rv lot

When you’ve driven long hours and it’s either this or Walmart, you’ll be glad its here. Full hookups, level spots, clean showers, laundry, wifi, and only $20.

Guide to Pawnee Rock

RV campgrounds around Pawnee Rock, Kansas sit in the central plains region at about 2,000 feet elevation. This area experiences hot summers with temperatures regularly exceeding 90°F and cold winters with occasional snow. Most camping facilities remain open year-round despite seasonal weather challenges, with gravel sites being the standard terrain type throughout the region.

What to do

Bird watching at Cheyenne Bottoms: Visit Cheyenne Bottoms Campground near the largest wetland in the interior US. "The marshlands exploded with sound. Frogs, crickets, owls, foxes, coyotes, and more wildlife sounds than I could identify," reports one camper who enjoyed the natural symphony after rainfall.

Explore historic Hays: Stay at Creek Side Resort for access to Hays, Kansas. "Hays is a small town with a lot to offer. We ate at Thirstys and loved it," notes a visitor who extended their stay to explore the area despite temperatures exceeding 100°F.

Fishing opportunities: Several campgrounds offer access to local fishing spots. Bring your gear during spring and fall for the best fishing conditions. The small pond with dock at Creek Side Resort provides a convenient option for campers wanting to fish without traveling far from their site.

What campers like

Clean facilities: 4 Aces RV Park in Kinsley earns praise for maintenance. "It was a clean, quiet campground. The bathrooms were clean. Parking pads were level," reports one camper who appreciated the overnight amenities.

Helpful staff: At Triple J RV Park in Russell, hospitality stands out. "Called Sunday of July 4 weekend and the owners answered. Late check in was zero issue. Super friendly folks and their pets are sweet as can be!" writes one reviewer who also enjoyed nearby dining.

Reasonable prices: Most RV parks in the area maintain competitive rates. "If need to stop and want a full hook-up for $20, give this place a try," states one camper about Greensburg RV, highlighting the value for cost-conscious travelers.

What you should know

Weather challenges: Summer heat affects camping comfort significantly. "The temperature was over 100 until almost 7:30 pm and our camper with the AC on high remained over 90 until almost 8:30," reports a camper at Creek Side Resort, suggesting spring or fall visits might be more comfortable.

Highway noise: Some campgrounds sit close to major roads. "There's a lot of highway noise, which should be expected since it's extremely close to I70," notes a Triple J RV Park visitor, recommending noise-sensitive campers request sites farther from the highway.

Mosquito preparation: Greensburg RV and other sites near water require insect protection. "It is quiet and it is free and near a real nice town... BUT then it doesn't blow away the mosquitos," warns a camper who ultimately couldn't stay due to the insect activity.

Tips for camping with families

Movie nights: Creek Side Resort offers family entertainment options. "5 stars for the brand new facilities, man-made duck pond, and 'Flicks by the Crick,'" mentions a reviewer about their outdoor movie screenings during warmer months.

Pet amenities: For families traveling with dogs, look for dedicated spaces. "We were parked across from the dog park as requested," notes a visitor at Triple J RV Park who appreciated the designated pet area during their week-long stay.

Cabin options: The Evergreen Inn-Motel & RV Park offers alternative accommodations. "Dog friendly and lady at front desk is very nice and helpful with reasonable rates," reports a camper who found the flexibility of cabin options beneficial for family needs.

Tips from RVers

Storm preparation: Kansas weather can change rapidly. "We stayed in our pop-up camper that fell apart during a super intense storm. Not the campground's fault, but scared the tar out of us," cautions a Creek Side Resort camper who needed to store their damaged equipment for repair.
