Walt's Four Seasons Campground & Country Store

    Exceptional family friendly campground!!

In June of 2023, my husband& I decided to move into our 42' toy hauler. We searched& searched within a 30-minute radius of our property that we had bought for a campground with great amenities and where we would feel safe with our 2 babies. Walt's is by far the safest, friendliest, fun-filled campground compared to any of the others we visited around. We were greeted with friendly faces and welcoming staff from our very first day of move-in. They made sure we got settled& hooked up ok and have continued to make us feel right at home. My husband is a truck driver so isn't always home when things go wrong with the camper. The staff has always been there to help when something happens especially when we have had issues with propane leaks, or the heater not working during the colder temps. This campground offers put-put course, swimming pool with poolside pub, horseshoes, catch& release fishing, walking trail, small dog park, playground for children, shower houses/restrooms, laundry facility, on site gas station, a country store with made to order pizzas, sandwiches& tex mex! They do several family friendly events throughout the year. At the country store they have anything of convenience that you may need from toiletries, drinks, snacks, ice cream, games, books, alcoholic beverages, etc. We absolutely love staying here. The sites have been freshly graveled. During the summer the lawn, gardens, pool, etc. Were maintained regularly and they are constantly doing updates weekly here. The best part it is also right off I-70. For long term campers that are truckers they do have a small area for semis. They also have a rentable party room inside the country store as well as outdoor areas for party rentals!

Big Bluestem Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

Perfect spot for camping, Kayaking, swimming, fishing, hiking, biking… or chillaxing!

Big Bluestem Campground Site 78! Prime spot with large shade tree to block western sun. 20’ from water’s edge with path to drop kayaks in, swim or even sit lawn chairs into the water to cool off. Noted as largest saltwater and clearest lake in Kansas. 30/50A/120V and water hookups. Concrete pad. Clean showers a few hundred yards away. Trash bin in middle of loop. Marina two loops away; about 4 minute drive. Outstanding rock formations, reminds me of Utah. Water levels effect access to some formations. Great time, great weather, we’ll be back soon! T-Mobile service 1-4 bars. Streamed HotSpot for ROKU without issues.

Big Bluestem Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

    AKA Big Bluestem

This area is the Big Bluestem campground. There is a shower/restroom area at the beginning, hiking trails and primitive sites. Then you enter Big Bluestem campground which has two loops. One has pull through sites and the other has mostly back in sites. Each site has electric, water, fire ring, and picnic benches. There are some really nice views from the outer sites.

Wheatgrass Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

    Beautiful lake views

This campground has 51 sites at $21 per night. Each site has electric, water, picnic table, and fire ring. The outside loop sites are pull through with beautiful lake views. The inner loop is back in sites with a view of the lake but nothing like the outside one. This area has few trees for shade and unfortunately no wind break. There is a swimming beach and a small fishing hole for kids. We camped at site 45 and 46 and had a small beach area that we could put our kayaks in. We had a beautiful view of the water and rolling hills. Each time we opened our door we instantly saw the lake and for most of the time it felt as if we were the only ones there. One thing that frustrated us was that the sites were either reserved or said One Day Only and there was no one at the camp host spot, the booth, or the office so we had to keep moving.

Switchgrass Hell Creek Area Campground — Wilson State Park

    Switchgrass/Grama campgrounds

Switchgrass and Grama campgrounds are in the same area. Switchgrass is a primitive area with picnic tables and fire rings. You can drive up to these sites and there are some really nice ones next to the water. There is also an area that is shaded. Grama are electric sites with the outer loop being pull thrus and the inner back in. They too have fire rings and tables. There is a restroom and water spigots in the area.

    Lucas Park

Well Maintained Campground Amidst Rolling Kansas Hills

I took a detour off the flat highway land in search of the town of Lucas where I had heard great things about their art installations. As I drove along the land began to open up to large rolling hills and beautiful landscaping with a turnoff just off the main road marked by some very interesting stones and a pavilion. I took a moment to pull off and noticed a kiosk which told the history of the area and some very impressive information about Lucas Park.

I was impressed by the information and one of the signs detailing the trails which led from just outside of the campground all the way to a very special cliffside which is renowned in the state of Kansas. So naturally I had to go check it out!!

Pulling into camp it had rained recently and some of the gravel roads were a bit slick for my small car, but I did notice they had some road work signs where they are working to improve these areas. The rest of the property was well developed and had great improvements including full service restrooms which were placed throughout camp and nice playground equipment for the kiddos.

The campground is divided into two separate areas. Each with their own unique appeal. I personally liked the campground closest to the pay station as it seemed to have better overall access to amenities such as community water. There was a good mix of campsites at this location with pull through and back in options with sites ranging vastly in overall spacing.

As a tent camper, I typically look for shaded areas which provide a little shelter from the elements and they did have several of these in this campground. Water access to the lake was also very close by although I didn’t see a swimming beach at the time of my visit. This could have been in part due to the rains and the lake levels or it could be that there indeed was not one in this area.

I had decent cell signal at this campground on AT&T.

    **TIPS: **

    • On weekends make sure to book in advance, the lake is one of the biggest draws of the area.
    • Drive into town and check out the“US Largest Toilet Bowl” art installation,“Garden of Eden” and the downtown district where you can find a few unique pieces. Don’t forget to stop off and try some of the famous Lucas bologna.
    • Check out the trail on the property to the rocks!

Yarrow Otoe Area Campground — Wilson State Park

Most Coveted Campground of the State Park

Wilson’s Lake in Kansas is something of a departure from surrounding areas of Kansas. If you take a moment to pull just a slight distance off the major highways and toward the Wilson’s Lake area you will be pleasantly surprised as the world begins to roll and open up into vibrant hillsides winding their way though the area.

I honestly stopped myself for a moment and checked the map thinking to myself in such a cliche way,“ We are not in Kansas anymore.”

But just as the map proved, I was in fact still in the same state, I noticed more and more signs for Wilson’s Lake State Park and found it was a must see while visiting the area.

The road winds you down to the park and down to what seems like a dead end just at the Yarrow Campground. This campground is one of the most coveted in the park because of its location, its convenience and its size.

When visiting Wilson Lake you might want to consider this loop for improved camping.   When I visited I noticed that the roadways in and out of the campsite were well structured to provide ample movement for larger units with back up capabilities.   While this loop also offers tent camping, it really is designed for the small to mid-size RVs.

Each campsite was equipped with a picnic table and fire ring, although I must say that some of the tables in this area were lacking a bit and needed some updating.    The sites also included water and electric hook ups with reasonable spacing between sites.   Pull- in/ back-in sites were graveled and semi level while the area between the spaces were grassy and lush.    During summer months this would be a perfect retreat for families looking to have a little fun together but still have convenience.

What I liked most about this particular site was the proximity it had to the swimming beach and also the restrooms.   Within 100 yards of one another you could access flushing toilets and showers or fun in the sun.     This was the best overall campground for accessing both of these amenities and therefore I believe would bring about the most fun for the family overall.   Additionally, a playground was located nearby.

I would definitely recommend arriving early if visiting on a weekend or making reservations online to ensure a site at this campground in particular.   The most popular of this lake region, Yarrow, stays booked well into the later portion of summer on weekends and is hit or miss on weekdays.

    TIPS:

    * Check out the rental shop just outside of the park where you can find anything from a paddle board to a canoe.   Also this is a great place to check in if you are needing a few last minute supplies.

    * Make sure to check out park rules at the kiosk before entering, this can be very valuable information especially when crowds are flocking to the area.

Guide to Marquette

RV sites near Marquette, Kansas provide accommodations amid the rolling prairie landscape of Central Kansas. Marquette sits at an elevation of approximately 1,440 feet with a continental climate featuring hot summers and cold winters. Most campgrounds in the area offer level gravel pads requiring minimal stabilization, with fall camping offering colorful foliage displays throughout October.

What to do

Historic exploration in Abilene: Visit the Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum, just 40 miles northeast of Marquette when staying at Walt's Four Seasons Campground. "Abilene, the boyhood home of President Eisenhower was right up the road and worth a visit," notes camper Paul B.

Visit Lindsborg's Swedish heritage sites: Explore the town known as "Little Sweden" just 10 miles from Marquette, with its Dala horses and Swedish restaurants near Coronado Motel and RV Park. "Quaint little town, very convenient RV park. You must visit the blacksmith coffee shop when you're in town!" recommends camper Lee D.

Fishing opportunities: Multiple campgrounds offer fishing ponds for guests, allowing for relaxing angling without traveling far. At Lakeside RV Park, one camper noted, "Great place, nice spots, had some full hookups and some not, fishing pond, very nice people, not too far from Salina."

What campers like

Self-check-in convenience: Some parks offer hassle-free late arrivals. At Inman RV Park, "We weren't given an arrival deadline, no forms or markers - had our choice of the available spots - Paid by check with a note in the drop box," reports James H.

Clean facilities: Bathroom cleanliness ranks high on camper priorities. One visitor to Spring Lake RV Resort mentioned, "Clean bathrooms. Only communal fire rings and picnic tables. Country Highway sounds. Safe area and friendly patrons."

Staff assistance: Many campgrounds receive praise for helpful staff. At Walt's Four Seasons Campground, a long-term guest shared, "The staff has always been there to help when something happens especially when we have had issues with propane leaks, or the heater not working during the colder temps."

What you should know

Limited shade options: Many RV parks in the region have few mature trees. At Lighthouse Landing RV Park, a camper warned, "Sites are still being made, not all sites have picnic tables or fire pits. NO SHADE! For a one night stop between destinations it's okay."

Self-sufficient camping: Some parks provide minimal amenities. Inman RV Park offers "Minimalist place - (washer & dryer in the shed with the drop box - no bath house). There's a cafe nearby open at 6am," according to one reviewer.

Highway noise: Proximity to major roads means traffic sounds at certain campgrounds. One Spring Lake RV Resort visitor noted "Country Highway sounds" in their review, though they still found the park "clean and functional."

Tips for camping with families

Playgrounds and activities: Choose campgrounds with kid-friendly amenities. At Payne Oil RV Park, families appreciate the pull-through sites for easy setup. One Lighthouse Landing visitor shared, "There was a nice playground for our children and the sites were plenty big enough for us to get our truck and rig into."

Swimming options: Summer visitors can cool off at select campgrounds with pools. Walt's Four Seasons Campground offers "put-put course, swimming pool with poolside pub, horseshoes, catch & release fishing, walking trail, small dog park, playground for children," according to Courtney P.

Navigation challenges: Some campgrounds have confusing layouts. A family staying at Lighthouse Landing mentioned, "The only reason this isn't 5 stars is that we had some difficulty finding our campsite. Otherwise, Lighthouse Landing was a great experience."

Tips from RVers

Cost considerations: Budget-friendly options exist throughout the area. One RVer at Spring Lake noted it was a "Bargain at $33" with "Gravel sites. Great, robust WIFI. Clean, modern bathrooms and showers."

Site preparation: Bring leveling equipment for slight slopes. Shannon G. reported that at Payne Oil RV Park, "The sites are gravel, pull through, and have 50/30/20 amp. Pets are allowed and our cell service was full bars."

Internet connectivity: Connectivity varies between parks. Dave D. praised Spring Lake's "Great, robust WIFI," making it suitable for digital nomads needing reliable connections while visiting RV parks near Marquette.
