Watkins Mill State Park and Weston Bend State Park offer the most accessible options for yurt camping near Lenexa, Kansas. Located within a 45-minute drive northeast of the city, these parks sit in the rolling hills of western Missouri where elevations range from 800-1,000 feet. The region experiences distinct seasonal changes with hot, humid summers and cold winters, making spring and fall ideal for comfortable yurt camping experiences.
What to do
Bike the lake trail: At Watkins Mill State Park, cyclists enjoy dedicated paved paths through wooded areas. "Great place to camp. The bike trail wraps the lake and connects to the edge of the campground. There is a couple historic sites not far on the side of the lake, quick little drive," notes Jason C.
Explore hiking options: Weston Bend State Park offers diverse trails for all skill levels. "Weston Bend State Park has an amazing hiking trail system within the park! Even one paved trail! We greatly enjoyed our visit and can't wait to go again!" shares Danielle H.
Fishing opportunities: Many parks offer lakefront access with seasonal fishing. "Smithville lake has nice big spots with electric only. Much quieter than other campgrounds on Smithville lake. More family friendly," explains Robin R.
What campers like
Shaded campsites: Smith's Fork Recreation Area provides relief from summer heat. "These RV spots have great shade, are spaced nicely apart, and are a quick walk to the lake! Amazing sunsets!" reports Steven N.
Clean facilities: Campgrounds maintain well-kept bathhouses. "The camp sites were small and compact but it was nice. These are the cleanest bathrooms and facilities that I have been to I think maybe ever," mentions Lauri J. about Weston Bend.
Proximity to Kansas City: Lake Jacomo - Fleming Park offers convenience for quick getaways. "Nice little campground tucked away just outside Kansas City. Close to everything but far enough that it's still really camping," says Steve C.
What you should know
Seasonal water shutoffs: Be prepared for changing amenities. "We stayed in October and due to unseasonably cold weather they shut off water with no notice and halfway through our stay. Ended up leaving early since we had no water," cautions Bridget U. at Crow's Creek.
Site leveling challenges: Some campgrounds require preparation. "Some sites are a long walk to any facilities. Our spot was 13" unlevel. Luckily we had several blocks of wood to help level our camp out," notes Roger W.
Train noise: Kansas City West-Lawrence KOA has railway disruptions. "This is a good KOA but the trains run ALL NIGHT long. There was a train passing through every thirty minutes or so, and it was LOUD!" warns Myron C.
Tips for camping with families
Kid-friendly amenities: Look for parks with playgrounds and activities. "The roads and trails are nice for scooters and bikes. Fairly close to the water and playground; within walking distance," shares Brittnie T. about Crow's Creek Park.
Swimming options: Check beach availability before planning. "The swim beach has been closed because of excessive vegetation growth," notes a camper about Watkins Mill State Park.
Jellystone Park activities: Kansas City Jellystone Park offers structured entertainment. "My kids love camping here, we came in an RV and were barely ever inside it until we were ready to sleep. So much fun activities for the kids to do, giving the adults time to do things like conversations and hanging out," explains Dawn H.
Tips from RVers
Full hookup availability: Smith's Fork offers complete services. "Of everywhere, Smith's Fork is the only one (so far) that offers Electric (30 & 50 amp), Water and Sewer at every campsite. At just $30 per day it is a steal!" advises Don M.
Site spacing considerations: Campgrounds vary in privacy levels. "The sites are close together with some shaded. Sites aren't very private and road noise from the nearby highway can be heard throughout the night if you're tent camping," reports Dyle K.
Off-season benefits: Consider timing your yurt camping trip to Lenexa area parks during shoulder seasons. "We love it when it is still kind of off season like Easter weekend and after labor day. We have small children and it can get pretty rowdy during the summer," suggests Robin R.
