Best Dog-Friendly Camping near New London, IA

Big Hollow Recreation Area features full hookup campsites that allow pets in a quiet setting near a small lake. Campers can choose from concrete camping pads, primitive tent sites, or rustic cabins while keeping their dogs leashed throughout the grounds. Geode State Park Campground similarly welcomes pets with recent upgrades including some full hookup sites and a new shower house. Welter Recreation Area offers a more primitive camping experience with pets permitted at basic sites with vault toilets. Lee County Pollmiller Park and Wilson Lake Park both provide pet-friendly cabin options for those seeking more comfortable accommodations. The campgrounds are mostly level and easy to navigate with dogs, though primitive sites may lack amenities like picnic tables.

Trails around Geode State Park's lake are well-maintained and make excellent routes for dog walking with varied terrain. Big Hollow's multiple pet-friendly amenities include a playground, shooting range, and equestrian trails accessible to leashed dogs. The nearby beaches generally allow pets in designated areas, though the water quality varies seasonally with some algae issues reported at Big Hollow's lake. Pet owners should note that wildlife is present throughout these natural areas, requiring vigilant supervision of dogs. Waste disposal stations are available at most developed campgrounds, but primitive areas like Welter Recreation Area with its wonderful river view may require packing out all pet waste. Camping fees range from just $10 per night for primitive sites to higher rates for full hookup options with pet-friendly amenities.

Twisted Oak Campground — Argyle Lake State Park

Stay Away from Argyle Lake State Park - Camp somewhere else

We stayed at Argyle Lake State Park in the Twisted Oak Campground, site 20. It was terrible. They had just mowed the grass after letting it grow 6 inches high, so it was everywhere. As a result grass stuck to everything and was on everyone. Imagine a hairy dog or cat shedding all of its hair and getting all over you.

The campground had very little tree cover and the campsites were right on top of one another. In the summer heat you get cooked.

Adding insult to injury the bathrooms were disgusting. This makes family camping with small children very difficult. I did not take any pictures and cannot comment on the lake or the rest of the park because we only stayed one night and left first thing in the morning because we had such a bad experience.

Personally, a lot of these problems could be remedied by decreasing the number of sites (to create more space), planting more trees, and hiring a staff who takes pride in the cleanliness of the campgrounds.

    Wildcat Den State Park Campground

    Wildcat Den State Park

Wildcat Den State Park is somewhat of an unknown gem. Surrounded by cornfields, rolling hills and the Mississippi River, this park is tucked neatly away in Southeast Iowa. We've been here in all four seasons and each one provides a different landscape.

The park offers non-electrical campsites with pit toilets located in the campground area. A portion of the sites are available on a first come first serve basis. The remaining sites have to be reserved. Each campsite has a fire pit and picnic table. There is well water available. There is also a large shelter across the road from the campground area. The bottom portion of the park, where the Pine Creek Grist Mill is located has modern restroom facilities as well as another shelter.

Hiking the Wildcat Den Trail Loop is a must. Looming sandstone cliffs, tall pines, and rock formations are all part of the park's landscape. This is also a great place to view spring wildflowers. There's several spots of interest you'll want to be sure to take in while there, including the Devil's Punch Bowl, Steamboat Rock, The Pine Creek Grist Mill built in the 1800's, the Melpine School, and most recently, a renovated log cabin. The Mill offers tours during the warmer months and it's worth the time to take the tour.

While the trails at the Den are very scenic, they're not well-marked. This is perhaps the only downside of the park. The park is dog-friendly, but they must be on leash at all times.

This is one of my favorite "hidden" parks in Iowa.

    Lake Darling State Park Campground

    Beautiful getaway

We stayed on the primative group side of the lake.  There is a small pond that we were able to let some of our scouts get started in kayaks and canoes before getting into the main lake.  Great fishing and walking paths.  Iowa has done a great job fixing up this area.  The cabins are small but clean.

What to do

Fishing opportunities: Big Hollow Recreation Area features a lake stocked with largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish. "If you're into fishing, this place has large mouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and catfish," notes Sarah J. The no-wake zone makes it ideal for focused fishing.

Shooting range: For target practice enthusiasts, Big Hollow provides dedicated facilities. "Campgrounds also include a shooting range, beach, equestrian trails, canoe rentals, and launch," explains Travis R., highlighting the range of activities beyond typical camping.

Water recreation: When water conditions permit, several campgrounds offer swimming access. At Spring Lake Campground, "I've stayed here every summer great place lots todo with the kids had a lake to fish, kayak, canoe. Has and outdoor skating rink next to the lake very neat," shares Taylor A.

What campers like

Budget-friendly options: Lower Augusta Skunk River Access provides economical camping with river views. "Beautiful little river runs right by the campground. Amenities are basic, but in reality that's all you need," reports Dylan S., highlighting the simplicity many campers appreciate.

Peaceful atmosphere: Many campsites offer quiet settings away from urban noise. At Big Hollow, one camper noted, "Site C was level for our camper van. Large, spacious site. Wooded. Fire ring." The primitive section provides solitude while maintaining access to facilities.

Wildlife viewing: Wilson Lake Park and surrounding areas offer opportunities to observe local fauna. "Nice campground with a decent sized fishing pond. Campground host is super friendly!" reports Andrew P., mentioning the added benefit of helpful staff.

Clean facilities: Multiple campers note well-maintained bathrooms at area campgrounds. "Very clean bathrooms and showers," states Joe M. about Updog RV & Camping, while another reviewer describes the bath house as looking "like my bath room at home."

What you should know

Seasonal water concerns: Some lakes experience algae issues during warmer months. "The lake was filled with algae. So if you're wanting to fish or swim, this isn't the place for you!" warns Lisa M. about Big Hollow during her summer visit.

Train noise: Crossroads RV Park in Mt. Pleasant experiences significant railway disruption. "Constant train traffic all night! Horns blaring! The tracks are less than 1/4-mile away," cautions John C., suggesting noise-sensitive campers consider alternatives.

Site spacing variations: Some campgrounds feature more densely packed sites than others. "If I walked behind camper, I had to hang on to spare wheel or fall down the slope. Barely enough room in front of camper to park pickup at an angle," explains Kevin B. about one location's tight configuration.

Reservation requirements: Several parks require online booking. Travis R. notes that Virginia Grove Recreation Area requires "Online only reservations," while other parks may permit first-come, first-served camping during off-peak seasons.

Tips for camping with families

Playground access: Lee County Pollmiller Park offers family-friendly facilities. "The park is clean and family friendly. The beach is a great addition for some family fun," recommends Brittany M., highlighting amenities beyond basic camping.

Swimming options: For families seeking water recreation, several parks maintain designated swimming areas. "They have a good swimming area were u can rent canoes and different things which isnt very expensive!!" explains Ashley P., noting the affordability of water activities.

Safety considerations: Pet friendly camping near New London, Iowa requires vigilance around water features. Many campgrounds have unfenced ponds or rivers requiring close supervision of children and pets.

Local attractions: When camping with families, nearby points of interest can enhance the experience. Andrew P. recommends: "Did go to the creamery nearby. If you stay here and don't visit the creamery, you're definitely missing out!"

Tips from RVers

Full hookup availability: RVers seeking pet-accommodating camping near New London should note which parks offer complete services. "This is a great campground. Sites are pretty level and easy to get parked. Full hookup!!!" emphasizes Jeremy about Big Hollow Recreation Area.

Concrete pad benefits: Several campgrounds feature improved parking surfaces. "They had a weekend that u could stay there for free! it was very nice i was the only onevat the campground at the time!" reports Ashley P. about Lee County Pollmiller Park, which offers concrete pads at some sites.

Site selection strategy: For RVers who want privacy while maintaining access to amenities, specific site recommendations can help. "If you want more privacy and easy access to the lake for kayaking I'd go for 14, 15, and 16," suggests Sarah J., offering insider knowledge about optimal positioning.

Size constraints: Larger rigs may find challenges at some local campgrounds. While many can accommodate big rigs, certain areas like Welter Recreation Area may be better suited for smaller setups with its more primitive design and limited space.
