Best Cabin Camping near Creston, IA

CAMPER SUMMARY PRESENTED BYFord

Several cabin options surround the Creston area, with Green Valley State Park Campground offering lakeside cabins approximately ten miles from town. Three Mile Lake Recreation Area features clean, well-maintained cabins that sleep up to four people, complete with basic furnishings and lakefront views. Lake Icaria County Park provides cabin accommodations with full hookup utilities, fire pits, and picnic tables for families or groups. Most cabin facilities include electricity, heat, and access to nearby showers and restroom facilities. "Cabins are very clean, the bunks allowed for four to sleep. Beautiful sunsets overlooking the lake," notes one visitor to Three Mile Lake.

Rustic and deluxe cabins are both available, depending on the location. Lake View Campground at Lake Icaria offers family-friendly cabin rentals with convenient amenities and proximity to water activities. Des Moines West KOA Holiday, though farther from Creston (approximately 50 miles northeast), provides well-appointed cabin accommodations with modern conveniences. Reservations are strongly recommended, especially during summer months when campgrounds report high occupancy rates. Most cabins are pet-friendly, though policies vary by location. Wilson Lake County Park features two cabins that face a small pond, providing a quieter, less crowded alternative during peak season.

Most cabins include beds but require visitors to bring their own linens, towels, and personal items. Kitchen facilities vary significantly between locations—some include basic cooking equipment while others offer only outdoor fire rings or grills. Many cabins are accessible year-round, though some parks like Green Valley State Park operate seasonally from April through December. Cabins at Three Mile Lake provide access to fish cleaning stations and nearby shower facilities. Several campgrounds are located near lakes offering swimming, fishing, and boating opportunities, with Lake Icaria providing boat rentals and concessions. "This is a very clean, lovely campground. The spots are spacious, and there are tons of options," reports a Lake Icaria visitor.

    Little River Recreation Area

Rv/tent sites on a big lake... Fish, fish, fish

Nice little campground 4.5 miles of the freeway...9 minutes away from a small town with stores that stay open till 9. A bait shop onsite, closes early. Most rv sites with power, walk in tent sites w/o. Rates are great $12/15. Showers and flush toilets onsite as well as cabin rentals, canoe rental and fire wood available. Downside is a lot of flying bugs...not really biting just annoying. The lake has a lot of fish in it I hear... Family friendly.

    Lake Icaria Co Park

    Great place that wasn’t crowded

Very nice place. Full hook up spots were very nice. Easy to get into, plenty of space, fire pit, picnic table, friendly & helpful park officers, lots of activities (hiking, boating, boat rentals, beach, bait shop, close to a race track in Corning, etc). We went the weekend after Memorial Day & there were plenty of spots. Quiet & family friendly. Even have food trucks that serve over by the beach!

    Little River Recreation Area

Off the beaten path and very quiet

General: This small county park (16 electric, 14 tent sites plus three cabins) is not reservable which might be an issue on summer weekends but on a Sunday in April, was no problem. Including us, only three sites were occupied. The rates are very reasonable -$15 for electric, and $12 for tent sites.

Site Quality/Facilities: Each site has a generous-sized picnic table and fire ring. Some sites are better than others, however. Sites 2 and 3 (both electric) are sloped down and the driveway is a bit overgrown. No physical separation between sites which when we were there was not an issue but might be when more crowded. Some of the sites have a direct water view but again, some are more sloped than others.

Bathhouse: A short hike uphill from all sites but it was very clean when we were there. The showers also looked clean, but I did not use them so cannot comment on how well they worked.

Activities/Amenities: Fishing! We saw a few boats on the water when we were there and there were two docks, one of them handicapped accessible. Swimming is not allowed but there is a nice day-use area not far down the road with a nice beach and picnic area. There are also horseshoe pits and a small but very nice playground. No hiking trails that I could discern. There was also a small little free library.

When we were there, we appreciated the quiet, out-of-the-way setting. It is close to the town of Leon but we circumvented it on the way in and out so I don’t know what services might be available.

    Springbrook State Park Campground

    Small town camping

Electric sites, no reservations required I don't think. Nice bathrooms, 3 showers for the women's room with a family size shower. Nice playground, volleyball net, basketball court. Picnic tables and fire rings. No cell service down at the campground. You could call that a pro or a con! Really nice campground employees.

    Nine Eagles State Park Campground

    Overall nice park

Nice park, a little run down, but there's a new park ranger in town who is trying to fix it up. New rental cabin almost finished, clean beach, boat ramp and fishing. Clean spacious bathrooms, nice playground for the kids and a really cool equestrian section. No store, no wood so get what you need before you get here.

Lake of Three Fires State Park Campground

Rated so high due to the trails

Tons of miles for biking and hiking and if you fold in the trails on the public lands around, more then anyone can do in a weekend. We'll maintained. Campground, not so much. That would get a much lower score if I rated just that. Very few electric spots and they are close and in disrepair. Bathrooms are oddly placed like the group campground would need to walk all the way across the picnic area to have any access. Once they close the shower facilities, some campgrounds have no bathrooms available. Oddly, there is a LOT of vehicles driving through which for winter was surprising. All in, lots of trees, nice beach, Frisbee golf, super interesting cemetery right outside the property and loads of other public lands all sitting around a very nice lake. But bridges out, an entire row of non-working electric posts and weird bathroom placement leads to an overall odd use of a state park.

    Green Valley State Park Campground

    Nice, clean campground

Campsite was pretty packed on a Saturday night in late September. We didn't have a reservation but was able to get one of the last tent sites available. Nice spot, fire pits have nice swinging grates on them. There was a picnic table at our spot as well. Great view of the lake from here. We were in Campsite 092. Only drawback is that there must be a cow farm somewhere to the south as you will hear cows mooing all night at this campground.

    Des Moines West KOA Holiday

    Nice modern KOA

Large modern KOA with sites to accommodate all sizes of rigs and also tent campers. Gravel sites require some leveling. Not much privacy between sites nor shade. Bathhouses were clean and private. Laundry available. Off leash dog area available. Convenient to John Wayne’s birthplace and covered bridges of Madison County. Bulk propane tanks were on site for winter campers. Camper cabins available. Small store with Hunt Brothers pizza to order. Gathering room on site and pedal car racetrack. Verizon cell signal was good. Garbage dumpster and dump station on site.

Guide to Creston

Cabin camping options near Creston, Iowa include both rustic and modern accommodations throughout the region. The area sits among the rolling hills of southwestern Iowa at approximately 1,250 feet elevation. Winter temperatures average around 25°F, while summer months typically reach the mid-80s with moderate humidity levels.

What to do

Bike the lake trail: Green Valley State Park offers a paved trail circling the lake for cyclists of all ages. "There is a nice trail to ride your bike around the lake and through the park. Don't leave your bike at home," advises Matt S.

Fish from shore: Lake of Three Fires State Park Campground provides multiple fishing jetties for anglers without boats. "There are 2 boat ramps if you want to go out on the 'no wake' lake. There are plenty of fish to be caught including bluegill, largemouth bass and channel catfish," notes Kimberly W. The park also features "fish cleaning stations on the docks," according to Molly M.

Explore historic sites: The cabins at Winterset City Park offer proximity to local attractions. "We loved this park. The bridges of Madison County, Clarke Tower, cute local ice cream shop, John Wayne Museum! So much fun in a cute Iowa community!" shares Adam.

What campers like

Peaceful natural settings: Many cabin rentals offer quiet environments away from crowded campgrounds. At Wilson Lake County Park, "the 2 cabins face small pond" and provide "a small, quiet place. We were the only campers," reports Ashley B.

Clean facilities: Three Mile Lake Recreation Area maintains well-kept cabins. "Clean bathrooms but noticed paid time showers were taped 'out of order' morning of our departure so no showers for us. Very quiet and nice short hiking trail around lake," writes Glenda about Wilson Lake County Park.

Evening views: Green Valley State Park Campground offers particularly scenic cabin locations. "What I personally like is that at Green Valley SP you can get a nice campsite right by the lake. This makes for great views when the sun is setting and rising," says Matt S. Another visitor comments that "it's a small friendly campground on a lake" with opportunities to "sit by a campfire or visit with your neighbor."

What you should know

Weather impacts: Seasonal planning affects cabin availability and comfort. "We visited in August and realized it was prime family vacation time before school starts up again, so a little crowded and noisy... We plan to go back when Autumn arrives, mid week," advises Laura W. at Green Valley State Park.

Self-sufficient preparation: Most cabin rentals require guests to bring personal items. "Clean, lovely camp ground. The spots are spacious, and there are tons of options. In the fall we went and had no neighbors. It's busy in summer, but well kept," explains Nicole B. about Lake Icaria Co Park.

Booking requirements: Reservation policies vary by location. For Three Mile Lake, visitors should check availability in advance, while at Lake of Three Fires State Park, "you can see not only where your site will be but it tells you the electrical voltage, the length and other important information about the site you are choosing."

Tips for camping with families

Kid-friendly activities: Look for cabins near recreational amenities. Lake of Three Fires State Park "has a good sized lake for fishing and kayaking, but not too big for large speed boats. It has miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding. It has a great frisbee golf course that my boys loved playing," mentions Caralee D.

Playground access: Several cabin locations feature play areas for children. "Very nice place, close to the lake. Beach at walking distance through the trail. Fishing area, two kid playgrounds and at around 15 minutes to any grocery stores and gas stations," writes Angel E. about Green Valley State Park.

Off-peak timing: For quieter family experiences, consider weekday cabin rentals. "We had the lake to ourselves! Although there were RVers and a nice group of Boy Scouts part of the time, there was no one else in our tent camping side," reports Isaac F. at Lake of Three Fires State Park.

Tips from RVers

Supply access: Des Moines West KOA Holiday offers cabin alternatives with convenient provisions. "Pizza & Chicken ordered on site was a delicious dinner when we were just too tired to fuss with our own gear. Nice store too!!" mentions Lisa D. This location is approximately 50 miles northeast of Creston.

Seasonal utilities: Winter cabin campers should verify heating capabilities. "Office is open until 7pm which was very helpful as we arrived a little later than expected. Well kept, clean bathrooms with space heaters running to ensure they're warm during the December cold," reports Iris A. about Des Moines West KOA.

Site layout considerations: Pay attention to cabin placement relative to facilities. "AC was on upon arrival- check in/out was quick and easy! Bathrooms were immaculate!" says Lisa D. about the cabins at Des Moines West KOA Holiday.
