    Hueston Woods State Park Campground

A Relaxing Shoulder Season, Weekday stay

    Hueston Woods State Park, Oh.

    http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/huestonwoods

Campground Overview: Hueston Woods State Park is very close to Miami University...in the Southwest area of Ohio. The direction we traveled from the south took us on numerous winding country lanes through farm country that actually meandered in and out of Indiana and Ohio.

(Disclaimer: I am a tent camper, preferring backcountry sites of solitude and privacy...so take my reviews of campgrounds with a grain of salt).

The campground area is separated not only by roadway, but a short walk, ride or drive from the reservoir, docks, boat rental beach area and tiny nature center.

The Campground Office sits at the campground entrance and does offer quite a bit of camping items for its tiny size should you have forgotten anything. The cabins and lodge are on the opposite bank of the reservoir. The tent site area was sparsely occupied and the particular area was empty that I chose.

All campground sites are line of sight, no barriers or buffer between neighbors(something I do not enjoy)...the trees are mature and tall so offer no privacy. Noise/sound travels so when full, you’ll likely hear your neighbors conversations.

Unknowingly, it appeared every weekend in October has a big Halloween emphasis, so the upper campground was sold out. I was advised the lower non electric loop would also be sold out...which reinforced my gratefulness for midweek camping.

With the vast old growth forests, dried/dead branches for firewood was plentiful for a chilly night(38) fire. We evaded the impending rain for once and pressed on. Weekend campers experienced heavy storms as we left.

There are several hiking trails and biking trails. Streams were dried up at our visit. A cool restoration covered bridge was a short hop from the campground. The lodge has a restaurant, a gift shop, an outside pool and a nicely equipped activity room for older kids complete with numerous arcade games, pool table, and ping-pong table. There is also a token tiny exercise center-Key card entrance for lodge stayers. The A-frame lodge, though nostalgic, needs some TLC and updating(especially the exterior).

Traffic noise is noticeable, especially during quiet hours. While not excessive, it’s disruptive.

Deer sighting were plentiful as were chattering tree rats...ahem, squirrels, sorry. Woodpeckers stayed busy overhead. At dusk an overly friendly“masked trash panda” encroached seeking to share my delectable and perfectly toasted s’more...having to be chased off(unfortunately, it appeared he has been fed by campers to be that bold). Other small birds were plentiful as were migrating Canadian honkers.

Housekeeping notes: In the larger non-electric loop newer restrooms existed...modern bathrooms and showers were clean and stocked with TP. No paper towels offered, only electric hand dryers. Bathroom stalls, like the showers, utilized shower curtains rather than lockable doors. In my tent area...antiquated wood shed pit latrines...that truly needed razed.

I did not have time to walk any trails, but talked with mountain bikers that spoke favorably. There were several marked trails near the reservoir area.

Final Thoughts: It was a nice choice for a stop-over as I drifted north. However, I would not want to stay when it’s busy or on the weekends. The reservoir beach and watercraft fishing appears a big draw...and I wish I had brought both my bicycle and canoe.

    Thousand Trails Indian Lakes

Large property with lots of green space

Indian Lakes Campground is 10 minutes east of downtown Batesville, an hour to the east of Indianapolis and an hour to the west of Cincinnati. With over 1000 sites they offer a KOA section, year round leased sites, Thousand Trails sites and individual sites. We’re a married couple in our forties traveling with two dogs and a cat in our 37 foot motorhome and members of Thousand Trails. We arrived on April 3rd, the day prior to Indiana Covid-19 stay at home restrictions. The property owners were gracious enough to allow us to extend our stay beyond the normal 14 day limit for our personal safety. We were assigned a 50 amp site with water and sewer in loop 4B. This is an open loop with very few trees for shade. Immediately across from our site is a large field about the length of a football field. We can see the lake in the distance past the recreation and pool areas. During our stay we did not access the restroom, laundry, recreation or store areas as we were practicing social distancing. We plan to make many return trips to this campground in the future. Because we were the first to stay in our site since the campground closed for the winter season we had a little site maintenance/pickup to perform but nothing too out of the norm. The noise from the highway can only be heard about once a week. On weekends there’s an increase in golf-cart users and most neighbors are respectful during quiet hours.

Starve Hollow State Rec Area Campground

    Good variety

Starve Hollow offers camping from full hookup, electric only (by the lake), tent camping, and cabins.  The lake has a swimming area (no lifeguards), playgrounds, and bathhouse.  The lake allows boats with electric trolling motor only.

We stayed in the full hookup section (camping facilities: electric, sewer, and water hookup as well as fire ring, picnic table, and parking spur at each site. Modern restrooms/showers(wheelchair accessible) are available nearby. 53 sites available, sites 222, 232, and 234 are wheelchair accessible).  The bathhouse was clean (even though it rained most of the weekend).  these sites are a good size and able to get any size Trailer or RV into these sites.  There is mostly grass on most of the sites in this area.

The campground also offers electric only sites (camping facilities: electric hookup, fire ring, picnic table and parking spur at each site. Drinking water is available in area. Modern restrooms/showers(wheelchair accessible) are available nearby. Dumping station is available. There are 87 sites available. Sites 28, 44, 65, 75 and 90 are wheelchair accessible).  They have about 20 sites that back up right to the lake allowing fishing from your campsite.  Keep in mind that a lot of the electric only sites are very tight with a lot of trees in the area.  I can probably only get my 36 ft 5th wheel into a third of the sites, but there are many of sites that had shorter units on them.

Cabins:  Starve Hollow has 13 rent-a-camp cabins available March-Nov.(closed Dec.-Feb.)(NOTE: Local sales only during off season/winter months, contact property for details). Each cabin has a front porch with a swing, outside electric outlet and front porch light. Inside there are two small rooms each providing a ceiling fan with light, a heating/cooling unit and electrical outlets. The front room offers a small table with bench seats, corner shelf, chair, rocking chair, and a loft. The back room offers a bunk bed(single) and a double bed(NO LINENS or MATTRESS PROVIDED). Air mattress recommended.

Fishing/Boating Starve-Hollow Lake has three boat ramps to choose from, one at the dam and two in the electric campground. Kayak, rowboat and canoe rental is available. A valid Indiana fishing license is required. Rowboat and canoe rental is available from mid April through October. Starve-Hollow Lake is a trolling motor only lake. For campers a fish cleaning station is available.

Swimming A large beach is available for swimming from the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. Restrooms, dressing facilities, showers, and food concessions are available to visitors. Wheelchair ramps allow access to beach and concession area.

Picnicking There are picnic areas and picnic shelters that can be reserved. Both shelters can be accessed by wheelchair. The East shelter has an electrical outlet. Picnic tables and grills are located at the picnic sites. A wheelchair accessible playground, basketball goals, softball fields, horseshoe pits and a sand volleyball court are located on or near the swimming beach.

Hiking Trails Starve Hollow has several hiking trails to explore that total approximately 11 miles.

Starve Hollow State Rec Area Campground

Great place! We will come back!

There are full hook-up sites and electric. Regular electric sites on the water are beautiful but not sure we could park our 41 ft fifth wheel on a water site. Trails are rugged at times and you can access them through campground. We are here in the fall but the beach looks like a good size. Boat rentals. Cabins look cute. We peeked in one. Double bed with bunks in room. Theres a loft for kids. A/C and heat but not bathroom. Bring a mattress or sleeping bags or you will sleep on wood. I recommend the water cabins. Playgrounds are sprinkled throughout. DNR dont patrol a lot. Quiet campground.

    Hueston Woods State Park Campground

    Yurt life

This camp ground is pretty standard for Ohio State Parks. It does have a cool new sleeping option. Yurts! We enjoyed our time in the yurt.  They also have trails that are easy to tackle and well marked at this park.

We were able to easily have the kids in one bed and we were in another bed.  The small fridge and microwave made it easy to pull a meal together. The fan kept us cool.

Water is a short walk away and so are restrooms. You have to bring in local fire wood for your camp fires.

    Brown County-Nashville KOA

    Quiet and friendly

This is our go to campground. Not overly large but it’s clean and quiet. The owners are friendly and helpful. Bathrooms/showers are clean. Laundry on site. Small store and library where you can borrow books. Nice dog walk and small fenced dog area. Sites level and good for big rigs down to tents. Three cabins also available. Owners are relatively new and have been working on improvements continually. Highly recommend!

    Brown County-Nashville KOA

Camping with 5 & 6 yr old grandkids

We’ve stayed at a few Koa campgrounds and this one didn’t compare quite as expected. It’s small, clean and owners are very friendly and helpful but one stretch of sites (where we were) is tight, short  and cramped. We had four 90-degree day’s so the big plus was the pool. Although dated it was large, clean and refreshing. The sites are on large sharp rocks too (not gravel) which was challenging. Even on our large rugs I could not take a single step without shoes. I also felt bad that our campfire ring was at the back canvas opening of our neighboring camper and a little frustrated that I had to keep moving our 4 camp chairs each time we walked from our door to the truck. The owners did advise they were working on expanding those campsite spots which is good. Our grandkids didn’t care to play in the playground (clean but small and dated) but nice playgrounds were plenty in the Brown County State Park whose entrance is just across the road which gives location an A+. Famous Nashville, IN was just 2 miles away.. another location plus. We’d go back again but I’ll be more site picky next time... but I still won’t like the big rocks! I like a little barefoot time when camping!

    Follow The River RV Resort

    Florence, IN…Nice campground

Park is well maintained. Nice sized pool and very clean pool area. Park has a playground and dog park. Lots of space between campers with cement patio, fire pit and picnic table and lots of trees. We had no issue pulling in our 42’ 5th wheel. We came in after hours and our name with sits number was posted on the door and plenty of maps for the park. Nice layout! You could barely hear a train off in the distance which sounded cozy. Campground is about 30 min from Madison and Ohio River is across the street. Only con- trash cans are like in a whole different country and hard to get too. Would stay again!!!!!

    Scottsburg/Raintree Lake KOA

    Repeat Visit

This was a repeat visit. Just as perfect as the first time. Lake was beautiful and staff are always so helpful. They even have an on-site RV Tech that works for them who helped us fix our hot water heater. Very professional young man. We also enjoyed live music at the pavilion, and PIZZA from their new café, it was fabulous. They even have Boba tea.

The area sits at approximately 900 feet elevation with a humid continental climate featuring warm summers and mild to cool winters. Several upscale camping venues are situated within 30-40 miles of Osgood, providing varying degrees of luxury accommodations with both waterfront and wooded settings.

What to do

Kayaking and water sports: At Whitewater Memorial State Park Campground, visitors enjoy direct access to both Brookville and Whitewater lakes. "Awesome campground for Kayakers. Many fishermen and kayakers frequent the lake trails," notes one visitor. The park maintains water access points specifically designed for small watercraft.

Outdoor recreation: Hueston Woods State Park Campground features multiple hiking and biking trails across its extensive grounds. "It has lake activities, hiking, biking, fishing. Camping can be in tens or various cabins or even in the lodge," reports one camper. The park's large swimming beach includes a dedicated dog swimming area.

Historical exploration: The Frontier Heritage Campground in Friendship offers proximity to significant historical sites. "Great place to go during hunting season and some rifle shows," shares a visitor. The surrounding area contains 19th century covered bridges and historic structures that provide cultural context to the natural surroundings.

What campers like

Waterfront sites: Campers at Hidden Paradise Campground appreciate the direct water access. "We stayed in site 107 on a Sunday night and had the section all to ourselves. My son fished and we watched random people float down river," writes one camper. These sites combine privacy with convenient water activities.

Well-maintained facilities: Follow The River RV Resort receives consistent praise for its upkeep. "The bathrooms having regular working toilets and showers. The bathrooms are very nice," mentions a recent visitor. Another adds, "One of the prettiest campground/RV parks I've been to! Super well taken care of with pool access, a tree for shade at every lot."

Abundant fishing opportunities: Anglers frequently mention the quality fishing at several area lakes. "The lake is awesome. We love going camping here. We go at least 3 times a summer because of how peaceful it is," notes a regular visitor to Indian Lakes. The various water bodies support diverse fish populations and fishing experiences.

What you should know

Site selection considerations: At Thousand Trails Indian Lakes, travelers should plan accordingly. "The online reservation can't choose the sites or areas so I called the number that was listed for campground and was on hold at a call center somewhere," reports one camper. Another notes, "It's a very large campground with lots of amenities. The only negative things were the loud golf carts with their music blasting until late at night on the weekends."

Seasonal variations: Most luxury glamping options in the area operate from April through early November. Several campgrounds limit amenities during shoulder seasons, with peak services available June through September when temperatures average 75-85°F during daytime hours.

Road conditions: Several campgrounds have reported issues with interior roads. "The only major potholes I have encountered are upon entering and exiting near the ranger station," mentions a visitor. Heavy rainfall can affect unpaved areas, particularly during spring months when precipitation averages 4-5 inches monthly.

Tips for camping with families

Beach and swimming options: Winton Woods Campground offers extensive water recreation for children. "Winton woods is a fun place to go with the family. There are playgrounds, trails, boat rentals, there's Parkys farm which is fun for little ones! We love it!" explains one family camper. The park maintains designated swimming areas with nearby playgrounds.

Multiple playground access: Starve Hollow State Recreation Area provides distributed play areas. "Playgrounds are sprinkled throughout," notes a visitor. Another adds, "Great getaway for the family. We love this place and camp here 5+ times a year. It's clean and so much to do with kids."

Cabin alternatives: Several glamping options near Osgood provide cabin accommodations with varying levels of amenities. General Butler State Park offers family-friendly accommodations: "The cabins look cute. Double bed with bunks in room. There's a loft for kids. A/C and heat but not bathroom." These provide weather protection while maintaining a camping experience.

Tips from RVers

Site leveling awareness: At General Butler State Resort Park, RVers should check site grade. "At site 11 and a few others, they had no backstops at the back of the blacktop pad. If the site was level, it wouldn't have been as bad. Upon setting up our 16' camper, it began to slip backwards down toward the woods," warns a visitor. Many parks offer detailed site information upon request.

Hookup positioning: RV campers at various glamping locations near Osgood note the importance of checking hookup placement. "Our site had full hookup, flat ground so easy setup," shares an RVer at Hidden Paradise. Another notes, "The full hook-up sites are spacious with most offering a nice tree canopy."

Reservation timing: For luxury glamping experiences with RVs, book well ahead during peak season. "Even with the cooler weather, they still wreaked and were not pleasant to use," mentions an October visitor regarding some facilities. Fall glamping near Osgood offers colorful foliage with temperatures ranging from 45-65°F.
