    Oak Lake RV Resort

We came for a weekend… Stayed nearly 2 weeks! Oak Lake RV Resort is where family memories are made.

6 people, 1 pup & a 44.4' Keystone Sprinter... Oak Lake RV Resort handled it all with ease & gave us the BEST camping trip ever! From the moment you drive up, staff are waiting in golf carts to guide you to your site & even help with setup. We were nervous about fitting our big rig, but pull-through site #17 made it flawless. Where else does that??

We originally booked August 22–25, extended to the 29th & then lucked into staying through Labor Day weekend. We canceled our other plans because Oak Lake had everything we wanted & more!!Pond swimming & obstacle course, movies on our inflatable screen, golf cart glow parades, s’mores, homemade campfire pizzas & endless family memories. The kids are still raving about it!

Rebecca deserves a huge shoutout for going above & beyond! Tom & Marianne, the owners, are amazing hosts who clearly pour their hearts into making Oak Lake special. Even the coin operated laundry was a lifesaver & convinced us we need a washer/dryer in our camper for future impromptu stays 😂.

We’re already talking about being put on the list for a seasonal site for next year bc we know we’ll be back again & again. Oak Lake RV Resort is Newton County’s hidden gem!!! If you’re searching for fun, hospitality & true family camping memories... THIS is the place!! Hands down, every time.

Honor system pay at Festival Office in center of park. Sites are first come first served. 30 amp sites in center fill up fast. 31ft toy hauler. AC ran fine off 20amp.

Enchanted Shores RV Park & Campground

    Never Again!

We booked here sight unseen due to temporary employment in the area.

    What a terrible mistake.

The best thing was, that there is "full hook up" here???

This place is old and run-down to say the least, there's not a flat spot on any of the roads. The sites are dirt with something green in between. The stinkest water we've ever smelled, horrible!!! Our sewer connection was nearly buried. There is a laundry area, I don't know what it's like, I'd never wash our close in that nasty water, we found a Laundromat. The lots are verious sizes of tiny. Most sites you're back to back to your neighbor. Your door faces your other neighbor's door, it's like you shared a site. We asked for a picnic table and got one, but when we left for a week, when we returned it was gone! Despite the high rent, there's no internet or cable TV, basically no emenities. We were told there was planned activities, but we weren't there long enough to find out. There's a area for long-term, yearly sites. Several of the trailers in that area were old with beat up decks, some surrounded by junk.

We installed interior security cameras to keep an eye on our rig. Then stayed in a hotel until we changed our job location.

We can't image a worse location. I should be condemned.

We feel bad for those who are on the road and fall into this trap for a place to stay on the way, or close to Chicago.

    Last Resort Campground

    Quiet, reasonably priced rest spot.

We stayed here two weeks while visiting friends in the area. The site was a little small but was pull through and full hookup. Even though we were close to a highway and railroad, traffic noise did bother us. The wifi did not reach out area but I know they plan to expand it's capabilities soon. The best part was free access to the pond, paddle boats etc and friendly staff. The low points were very hard (with odd smell) water to the point where we didn't trust using the on camp laundry. Make sure you have a good on-line water filter.

    Prophetstown State Park Campground

    Campground with lots to offer

This is a really nice campground with many shaded sites. We camped in a pull-through full hookup site that was very level. There is a 5-mile paved bike trail that runs through the park. The trail winds through a prairie to where the Wabash and Tippecanoe Rivers meet. Very pretty ride. The state park has a water park and a working farm.

    Kankakee South KOA

    Month to Month BEWARE!

December 2020, we toured this KOA Holiday in Kankakee, Illinois for a long-term stay.

We noticed a few trailers with a lot of junk piled all around their units. When we inquired about them, were were told that those people were being evicted and would be soon gone. Great, since our site was directly across the street from those.

Well, no one left, the junk remained.

There were other sites that had wooden cages, tables and other structures built on them. Clearly a violation of KOA written violations.

Anyway, we weren't buying the place, but an awful eyesore.

We couldn't find another site for a long way around. Without another good option, we checked in for an extended stay.

We became friends with a few of our neighbors. We began comparing our utility charges and found that we were all being charged different rates for electric and internet. When we asked for actual "electric bills" we were told there wasn't individual bills, charges were taken by the owners reading your meter, strange. "Some" of us were paying for internet. Our neighbors had the ability to move to another job site,, so they packed up and left.

    Things aren't adding up.

We had nice site on the interior of a cul-de-sac, with a nice large open grassy space right behind us. It is one of the quietest and largest sites in an area, where most of us were staying long-term. After a few months, it became apparent that the owners had their favorite renters. The ones who had wooden structures, piles of junk and that were allowed to park their vehicles in areas that were designated "keep off the grass". Yep, that nice grassy area right behind our RV was where they parked their 2 vehicles, not utilizing their own parking spaces in front of their trailer. When we complained, we were told that we were welcome to park our second vehicle there also. However, when we parked our second vehicle in the same area, we were asked to leave.

As far as regular short-term camping, it's ok. It's older place with huge rotting trees, mostly dirt or gravel sites. The washers and dryers were nice in spring of 2021. The owners do a good job of "acting" nice and welcoming.

I would not recommend an extended monthly stay at this KOA HOLIDAY in Kankakee, Illinois.

    Wabash & Erie Canal Park

    Great Little Campground

Heading south out of Elkhart, we happened on this great little campground (CG). We called two hours out and they had a site that would fit our 39’ 5th wheel. We followed our RV GPS and Google maps instructions to the city park and CG area. When we came down the road to the CG we were unsure of the CG location, but it is located right behind the interpretive/conference center building. We were in FHU site C, which was technically a pull through. However, you have to turn in front of the interpretive/conference center and go around the building to be able to pull through the site at the back of the building. But, there’s a pine tree that is overgrown and could have scratched the side of our fifth wheel. Since we had already drove past the interpretive/conference center and were in front of site C, we just backed in to the spot, which was an easy back in and easily fit our rig and F-450. We got 3 bars on Verizon and 4 OTA channels, which included CBS and CW prime channels. We walked our pups along the canal and enjoyed the historic displays and buildings in this small park. We were soon joined by the campground hosts who arrived for their 4th season and they were very nice. There are 4 FHU sites of which A is the camp host. All the sites will take rigs up to 40’. There are also electric and tent sites as explained in the CG picture attached. There are walking trails and other interesting exhibits to explore. This CG is definitely a hidden gem. Too bad we only had an overnight stay.

What to do

Lake swimming and water activities: At Oak Lake RV Resort, campers can enjoy the lake with swimming and inflatable obstacle courses. Amusement park access: Indiana Beach Campground provides convenient access to the neighboring amusement park with discounted tickets. "If you stay with KOA you get decently discounted tickets to Indiana Beach amusement park," one camper shared. Another notes, "Tickets to Indiana Beach are $27.50 at the gate house."

What campers like

Security features: Love's RV Stop-Demotte IN 394 offers gated security that campers appreciate. "It just opened and it is well designed. The check in online is very easy... Good value and secure," mentions one reviewer. Another notes it's "new, gated and has basic amenities like a General store, Dog park and basketball court and tennis ball court."

Swimming options: Variety of swimming facilities receive positive mentions. "Swimming, camp fires, children parks, dog park, small trails, and only 10 minutes from Indiana beach," writes a camper about Lost Acres RV Park. At Prophetstown, "Waterpark is $5.00 and entertains all ages."

What you should know

Seasonal operations: Many rv parks near Mount Ayr, Indiana operate seasonally. Oak Lake RV Resort runs from April 15 to October 15. Similarly, Cedar Lake Ministries RV Park operates from April 1 to October 21. Lake Alexander has the same seasonal schedule as Oak Lake.

Campsite surfaces: Gravel and concrete pads are common at area parks. At Prophetstown State Park, "sites have chip gravel, clean sites, clean comfort stations." For tent campers, this presents challenges: "If you tent camp like we do the park makes you set tent up on gravel which is a little disappointing."

Water quality considerations: Water quality varies between campgrounds. At Enchanted Shores RV Park, one camper reported, "The stinkest water we've ever smelled, horrible!!!" Always check recent reviews regarding water quality before booking extended stays.

Tips for camping with families

Activity options for children: Rvino - Lost Acres, LLC offers numerous family-friendly amenities. "This is a beautiful family orientation campground. There is something for everyone. Playgrounds, new pool, kids activities, corn hole tournaments, fishing pond," reports one seasonal camper.

Proximity to playgrounds: Consider campsite location relative to play areas. "Our site was right next to the playground and my kids had a blast swinging, climbing, and jumping while we set up camp," notes one Oak Lake visitor. At Prophetstown, "The playgrounds are nice and big but far away from the electric sites."

Budget planning for attractions: Factor in additional costs for water parks and attractions. As one camper notes about Prophetstown, "The best thing about this park is the water park. Not included for camping price but still decent priced. We did go 3 days in a row which cost us $40 total for the weekend."

Tips from RVers

Site selection for large rigs: Several Mount Ayr area RV parks accommodate big rigs. Indiana Beach Campground has spacious sites but location matters: "We stayed in E567 I would stay away from these they are very muddy kind of tight to turn a 30 foot camper in."

Hookup reliability: Test electrical connections upon arrival. At Love's RV Stop, one camper noted, "The only complaint I had is the site we were at showed a ground fault on the 50amp Circuit so I had to use the 30 amp circuit but it's Nov so no need to run dual ACs."

Registration procedures: Online check-in options exist at some RV parks. "The check in online is very easy. I will definitely check out other Loves RV locations when traveling," mentions one reviewer. At Love's RV Stop, another notes, "We reserved and checked in online."
