    Shipshewana North Park Campground

Nice campground in a convenient location

We were passing through and decided to stop for frozen custard at the stand right next to the campground. The first review for this place did not seem very inviting but a more recent one was a little more positive. After checking it out, I thought it could use a little reinforcement of the positives! I’m not sure if there have been new owners since the first review but I received a very friendly greeting, and the office is open from 9 am– 8 pm and clearly marked as the place to check-in.

There are many options here: back-in or pull-thru tent sites, w/e sites, full hook-up sites, camper cabins, and fully equipped cabins. The campsites range from $32-$46 per night and the cabins range from $69-$144 per night. Sites 47-52 are close to the road so you will hear road noise, but Sites 11-35 are farther from the road and are more shaded. The layout is RV park style but there is reasonable separation between the sites.

The restrooms have a code for entry, and I did not see the inside of these.

    Amenities include:

    - a community fire pit

    -  game room with television

    - guest laundry

    - dump station

    - gift shop

    - pet friendly options

     -WiFi

    - There is, of course, an ice cream/frozen custard stand that I dare you to resist.

While we would not consider it a destination, we would definitely consider camping here en route – the price is reasonable, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Quiet place to get away

We have been here a few times. Really enjoy the secluded sites and the lake. It’s a small campground but it’s clean and quiet. Most sites don’t have water hookups but they do have electric. There isn’t much to do outside of the campground but there is a nice lake with canoe and kayak rentals. Very pet friendly and even has a dog beach.

    Twin Mills Camping Resort

    Beautiful Wooded Campground

Twin Mills is a really beautiful and quiet RV Campground, with tall trees in Northern Indiana. We frequent this location when getting RV Repairs and visiting Elkhart, the birth place of most RVs.

There are cabins and tent sites and a large lake access point with a beach area. The playgrounds seemed to be in good shape and the dumpsters were centrally located.

The park has a gate entrance for security.

There is a large pool area and basketball court.

There are several sections in the park, some more wooded and narrow sites, some are more spread out.

Cellular: T-Mobile had good signal strength and bandwidth, AT&T was not as good but still doable.

Most of the sites are full hook up, some have 30amp and some have 50amp.

Amenities: Pool Clubhouse Basketball Volleyball Picnic tables Fire rings Trash Playground Lake access Beach area Dock Cabins Tent sites

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Great for families and group camping

If you're traveling with kids or enjoy the community of being near your fellow campers this is a great option. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat this may be a bit loud and busy. However, the many amenities are a great way to find peace with the 9 lakes, 12 trails and a beach for swimming. The lakes and connecting channels are stunning for canoes and kayaks and there is a convenient rental area. This is a campground of convenience with a very well stocked campground store with reasonable prices right next to the entrance. There is firewood and ice for sale as well as staple cooking items and cute souvenirs. The campsites are spacious and have a picnic table and fire pit at each. This campground is a great way to stay close to the fun and other campers. With so many options there is a something for everyone! Safe travels happy campers 😄

    KOA Campground Middlebury

    Decent for a quick stop

Got us in last minute when our other plans fell through. Site was only $35 for a back in water/electric. Grateful for it but wouldn’t have booked this otherwise. Site was unlevel and ran into a hill on the back end. Not much space on ether side of us. Corner lot and the rec center and basketball court was directly behind. Kids cutting through the campsite all the time.

We called several times before anyone answered and the store was clearly understaffed. Although the staff was kind and doing their best. Picnic table is on its last legs and fire ring looked like it was run over. Overall it was a little shabby but definitely not bad. Good for a place to sleep but I wouldn’t book a week here. Not many restaurant options either and also no signs for this one on the highway.

    Harrison Lake State Park Campground

    Nice park for Northwest Ohio

We rented a yurt as a local weekend escape. Our kids loved the yurt. It was nice with a little mini fridge and 4 double beds. Campground showers and bathrooms are clean. It is one of the only state parks in northwest Ohio, a beautiful little spot nestled in farmland of Ohio. The lake is nice for swimming and there are bike rentals which was fun as well. We did not use it, but there is a dog beach as well. Sites are crowed and close together.

Guide to Garrett

Cabin camping near Garrett, Indiana offers accommodations in a region characterized by glacial lakes, rolling woodland terrain, and a four-season climate with humid summers and snowy winters. Most cabins in the area sit within easy access to multiple connected lakes, with many properties featuring waterfront sites ideal for fishing access. The northeastern Indiana topography creates natural opportunities for water recreation within short distances of cabin facilities.

What to do

Kayaking on connected waterways: At Crooked Creek Campground and Cabins, visitors can paddle directly from their accommodation. "River access at this campground so you can kayak about 5 hours to the public access and drive back. Or you can also rent kayaks near the public access and they will transport for you," explains Fred F.

Hiking trail exploration: Pokagon State Park Campground provides extensive trail networks connecting to nearby nature preserves. "There is an extensive trail system to enjoy that connects with the nearby nature preserve. There are horse tours and a very nice Inn for the less 'natural' crowd," notes Shelly S. The park offers options for various skill levels on maintained pathways.

Winter recreation: Pokagon State Park maintains seasonal winter activities when other facilities close. "There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc," reports Amy K., highlighting year-round recreation possibilities for cabin guests seeking off-season options.

What campers like

Lake access from cabin sites: Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground provides direct water access from many cabin locations. According to Amanda J., "I have stayed at this state park many times since I was little. There is so much to do. Between the hiking trails, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and biking. You won't ever get bored."

Privacy between accommodations: Many campers appreciate the spacing between cabins at certain facilities. Whitley K. notes at Chain O' Lakes, "There are a handful of paddle up camping spots that are very hard to reserve," indicating the premium placed on more secluded options. These paddle-accessible sites offer greater separation from other campers.

Recreation amenities: Angola/Hogback Lake KOA Holiday provides extensive on-site recreation options beyond basic cabin accommodations. "They have all of the KOA amenities pool, lazy river, jump pillow, playground and dog park. Entire campground was clean and well maintained," explains Andrew M., detailing features available within steps of cabin lodging.

What you should know

Bathroom facilities vary significantly: Bathroom access can differ dramatically between properties. At Indian Springs Campground, one reviewer noted, "This campground has around 500 sites and ONLY ONE BATH HOUSE!" Meanwhile, at other locations like Buck Lake Ranch, visitors report "Very clean" bathroom facilities.

Seasonal closures affect availability: Many facilities operate only during warmer months. Bixler Lake Park & Campground runs "from last weekend April to October 15" according to their listing, limiting off-season cabin options. However, some properties maintain year-round operations with varying amenity access.

Reservation timing matters: High-demand periods require advance planning for cabin bookings. At Chain O' Lakes State Park, "There are a handful of paddle up camping spots that are very hard to reserve," notes one camper, indicating competitive booking for premium cabin locations during peak seasons.

Tips for camping with families

Beach facilities for children: Several campgrounds maintain swimming areas suitable for younger visitors. "Kayaking and the beach was a huge hit with the kids," reports Jeremy C. about their experience at Chain O' Lakes, highlighting water recreation options appropriate for family visits.

Seasonal activities scheduling: Plan visits around organized events for maximum family entertainment. Buck Lake Ranch offers special programming that can enhance family stays. "This campground is great for music lovers as they have live shows on some weekends and a huge festival in September where we chose to camp on the bowl and had a great time," advises adrienn S.

Multiple play areas: Larger facilities offer various recreation zones spaced throughout the property. "There's 500+ sites, but all nicely separated and shaded. There's an inn, restaurant, cabins, boat rentals, horseback riding, bike trails, beach, toboggan run, etc. Tons of picnic areas and pavilions; would be a great spot for a family reunion," notes Amy K. about Pokagon State Park.

Tips from RVers

Seasonal differences in cabin occupancy: During non-peak times, cabin availability increases and noise levels decrease. "We spent this past week at Hogback Lake KOA. It is late in the season so much of the park was closed for the season, but we had a great year round site," shares Kevin A., indicating the benefits of visiting during shoulder seasons.

Utility reliability varies: Power consistency can impact cabin comfort at certain locations. As Michael G. experienced at Angola/Hogback Lake KOA, "Power went off and on 5-6 times in an hour. Surge suppressor was normal. No TV, plugs, microwave, etc..." This demonstrates the importance of checking electrical stability for cabins requiring powered amenities.

Site selection location matters: When booking cabins, consider proximity to roads and facilities. "Highway noise was terrible," reports one reviewer about roadside cabin sites, while others mention, "Quaint, quiet lakeside retreat" for waterfront locations. Request specific cabin placements based on noise sensitivity and access preferences.
