      Heritage Farm Alpaca Experience

      A truly wonderful experience!

I learned of this place through the Dyrt (thank you!) and knew I wanted to stay here! There are several options available: tent camping (including a tree tent!), RV camping (two with electric hookups), and a 170-year-old log cabin. If you are RV camping, there are two very clean, private, and fully stocked "outhouses" (see photo below)

We originally planned to camp in our van but with below-freezing temperatures and a forecasted snowstorm, we decided to take refuge in the log cabin. To call this a log cabin is a disservice; yes, it is made from logs(and is 170 years old) but I was expecting a tiny one-room cabin; instead it is a two-story cozy home that can sleep up to six people, all in one upstairs room (two full-size beds and two twin beds; would be great for families). It was cozy and warm, heated by a gas stove. The bathroom (with a shower) is accessed from just outside the back door but is heated. The kitchen is an outdoor grill and picnic table, but we did not use this.

Tim and Beth were very welcoming, as was Juno, their dog. We enjoyed helping to feed the Alpacas– they have over 50. The rooster crowed gustily at dawn (but dawn was after 7 am and we were already awake). Also on the farm is Stormy, the horse, chickens, and some barn cats. There is a shop that sells goods made from Alpaca wool and we made sure to visit before departing.

Staying here was truly special and we hope to return to camp in one of the RV spots or the tree tent in the future.

      Mississinewa Lake Campground

      Good campgrounds for boating!

If you want woodsy, private sites, don’t come here. Most are grassy and sunny. There are many areas where the sites back up close to each other. 2 rows of full hookup. Plenty of 50 amp and many good tent sites. Beach in the park but not walking distance. Great mooring area for campers. Don’t try to pull-thru in any sites that are back-in. DNR will come around repeatedly and ask you to turn around...after you are already set up. Disc golf, trails, store near the beach, cabin rentals.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Can be crowded, but a good park overall

We were a bit surprised that despite having a paid reservation , we still had to pay a $20 Day usage fee to enter the park, but no matter. This is a sprawling and sometimes confusing campground to find your way in. But the sites are generally shady if a bit close together. There are five facilities with showers and running water and six pit toilets. drinking water is accessible throughout the park.
The majority of sites have six person tables, though some, especially in the new 385-416 loop have little four person tables. These are also the least shaded.
Campground and facilities are clean and well maintained.
The General Store is one of the most impressively well stocked I have ever seen. Equipment, toys, tools, food souvenirs, you name it. Good dry firewood is $6.50 a bundle in the store, $7 on the honor system after hours. It burns fast, so you might want to buy more than you think. The store is open until 9:00 Friday & Saturday, but only 2;PM on Sunday and never on Monday. Keep that in mind if you're doing a 3-day weekend as we did. When checking out, look up to see the beautiful wooden canoe with wildlife inlaid wood.
Fire pits are mostly round iron with non-adjustable swing-away grills. Booking is through Indiana DNR/ Reserve America so you can see photos of the site you pick.
This was our second experience with an Indiana state park, and like our first (Pokagon, in the winter) we were impressed with the clear marking of the hiking trails (and canoe trail for that matter) there was a map and guidepost at every junction.
There's a beach, concession stand and boat rentals on Sand lake, the Park's largest. Lastly, there's a fish cleaning shed with running water outside the campground entrance that anyone in the park can use, something I wish more parks would provide.

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

Great for families and group camping

If you're traveling with kids or enjoy the community of being near your fellow campers this is a great option. If you are looking for a peaceful retreat this may be a bit loud and busy. However, the many amenities are a great way to find peace with the 9 lakes, 12 trails and a beach for swimming. The lakes and connecting channels are stunning for canoes and kayaks and there is a convenient rental area. This is a campground of convenience with a very well stocked campground store with reasonable prices right next to the entrance. There is firewood and ice for sale as well as staple cooking items and cute souvenirs. The campsites are spacious and have a picnic table and fire pit at each. This campground is a great way to stay close to the fun and other campers. With so many options there is a something for everyone! Safe travels happy campers 😄

Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground

A campground with a little bit of everything for everyone ...

PSA, this was my first time camping.  EVER.  I came here with a few family member to hike and get away from the rat race of life and that's exactly what I got. An awesome 1st time experience.  My site was NOT fully shaded and was level, a plus because I slept in my vehicle.  Our camp neighbors were friendly.  So many people, kids and well behaved dogs.  The quiet hours were quiet with exception of the couple loud drunk guys who ended up laying in the road near our sites.  I thought it was funny, but my experienced camping family members not so much.  Bathroom was clean and stocked.  Didn't use the available free showers, next time.  Water water everywhere and no mosquitos.  Trails were well kept.  They do have an enclosed fish cleaning station which looked nice.  Everything is within walking distance from your campsite.  Boat & kayak rentals are available, but closed after Labor Day.  The camp store has everything and anything you would need or need including souvenirs.  My late September weekend was cooler than normal, lows in the 40's and highs in the 60's.  The campfire smoke that hung in the air like ground fog.  Not a deal breaker.  I will be back in April 2026.  Going to give the cabins a try and do some fishing.  I will come back here !

      Heritage Farm Alpaca Experience

      Nice secluded but safe location

The beautiful farm is located in a rural area. Upon arrival we wasn’t sure where to go. There wasn’t a sign but we called Tim and he came right out and showed us to our spot. He was very friendly and accommodating. We felt safe and knew if we needed anything he was there to help. The tree tent was very comfortable. Picnic table and fire pit right there. We cooked dinner on the fire pit grill. The only one small complaint is the people staying in the cabin were extremely loud. Even though we was at the secluded area their voices carried until 3am. It would not stop us from coming back but should be noted. We walked around the farm, checked out the alpacas and goats. There was a class reunion going on so we didn’t want to bother anyone for a farm tour. Plus we was only there one night. We really enjoyed our stay and would definitely go back. I recommend checking this place out.

      Mississinewa Lake Campground

      Short but fun stay

Campsites have a gravel parking pad, picnic table, fire-ring, electrical hookups, and thick health grass which is awesome if you're staying in a tent! The have public wifi that isn't really working that often. There was a truck delivering firewood making rounds through the campground which was very convenient. Stuff to do - disc golf, beach, beach volleyball, hiking & biking trails, boating/fishing. Unfortunately we didn't get to stay here for long, so we're planning on coming back soon.

      Hoffman Lake Campground INC.

      June ‘26

Thursday, June 4-8th, 2026. site M1&2 M1 and M2 are end sites with Check in was easy, pass/card left at gate 20/30/50amp, good source, share with M2 4 water spigots to share with 4 sites Waste cap at site, did not use. The site had thick green grass and well maintained. Fire pits are small, but worked well for the six of us. picnic table for 6.

Great sites if you are camping with friends/family as you are back to back and close together.

The view of the lake from the site changes as more campers arrive. The majority of the CG are seasonal campers, most of the lots are well maintained and the campground has plenty of shade and the birds are active. Huge old growth maples and walnuts throughout the campground provided a decent amount of shade during our stay.

The restrooms are decent and very clean, 3 stalls and urinals with 5 showers in the men’s bathroom. The water was hot and a decent amount of room to change clothes and keep them dry during the shower.

The pool looks very nice, we floated in the lake. The south end of the CG has a nice beach area with boat ramp.

Prompt service from the owners when we had a few questions and the seasonal campers were extremely nice when talking to them!

      Heritage Farm Alpaca Experience

Bucolic Oasis in Peaceful Indiana Countryside

Book a weekend at Heritage Alpaca Farm (be it in a tent, RV, historic cabin, or forest tensile) and you will not regret it. This well-kept farm is tended to by incredible hosts, Tim & Beth. They have put much love into their inviting and scenic country haven.

As RV campers, we pulled into the circular driveway and parked with ease. A 30 amp hookup and water spigot are available within the recreation barn (along with ping-pong and often times Frost, the friendly Great Pyranese). From your rig you have a view of a small alpaca pasture and their covered event space.

Around the barn is a private fire pit, and Tim provided firewood upon request. Private toilets are a few steps away which are very clean.

WHAT MAKES HERITAGE FARM A GEM:

SUNSETS: We loved walking the grounds at dusk, enjoying epic sunsets and watching the fireflies light up, as far as the eye can see. The bicentennial barn is stunning and wonderfully restored. It's great for an excellent up-close look at the alpacas. Tim is a wealth of knowledge about the docile creatures and happy to answer any questions.

FRESH EGGS: We enjoyed farm fresh eggs every morning from their free-range chickens.

COOL CREEK: A small creek runs across the back of their property. On a hot Summer day, it's a nice place to sit and cool off.

ITALIAN PIZZA: An Italian style wood-fired outdoor pizza oven on the grounds is fired up for community pizza nights. Check with hosts to see when they are doing their next pizza night al fresco.

ALPACA STORE: A boutique on property sells luxury alpaca goods like scarves, wraps, socks, and more. The perfect place to pick up Christmas gifts. In November, a local artisan market is hosted here.

BIKING: The roads around the farm are quiet and smooth and make for excellent bike riding.

SWING: A swing on the property is a fun pastime for kids....Or for a small adult with a childlike spirit :)

*The town of Kokomo offers any groceries or amenities you need and is only a 20-minute drive.

    Guide to Andrews

Camping cabins near Andrews, Indiana provide convenient woodland accommodations in an area known for its network of interconnected lakes and wetlands. The region typically experiences warm summers with average temperatures around 85°F and cold winters that can drop below 20°F. Several state recreation areas in northeastern Indiana manage cabin rental properties that remain open year-round, though amenities vary significantly based on seasonal operations.

    What to do

Hiking opportunities: Chain O' Lakes State Park offers nine connecting lakes with hiking trails between them. "There is so much to do. Between the hiking trails, boating, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and biking. You won't ever get bored," notes one visitor to Chain O' Lakes State Park Campground.

Water recreation: Many cabins provide lake access or are situated near water recreation areas. At Lost Bridge West State Recreation Area, visitors can enjoy the "Three Falls Trail" with one camper noting, "This is one of my first trails I went on that started my love for hiking. It's so short and simple but we loved it. There was so much to see."

Off-season activities: Winter cabin camping offers different recreation options. One visitor at Mississinewa Lake Campground shared: "Winter camping so no showers/bathrooms. Great area, lots of wildlife. They have wifi by the water tower. Nice lake, some trails."

    What campers like

Lake views: Several cabins offer direct views of the water. "Sites 221-243, 202-204 offer lake views. I say VIEWS, not access," explains one camper at Lost Bridge. "Sites 228 and 232 have sites with good access to the lake."

Clean facilities: Many visitors appreciate the well-maintained shower facilities at the parks. "The showers were great! No push button for the water. You can adjust the temp as well, which you often don't get," reports a camper at Lost Bridge State Recreation Area.

Water access: France Park receives praise for its unique swimming area. "The quarry, wow! It was beyond stunning and never what I expected to see in an Indiana park. We had an amazing hike, checking out the quarry," one visitor reports. Another notes, "There is plenty of room for kayaking, fishing and hiking. The waterfall isn't huge, but it's beautiful."

    What you should know

Reservation requirements: Most cabin facilities require advance booking, especially during summer months. Availability varies significantly by season and location.

Bathroom accessibility: Distance to facilities varies by site. At Lost Bridge, one camper points out, "They also have the nicest pit toilets I've ever seen ANYWHERE! They didn't even smell."

Noise factors: Some cabins experience noise from nearby transportation routes. At Indian Springs Campground, a reviewer noted, "The highway noise was terrible. We had A/C on and sound machine and still had a rough time sleeping."

Seasonal operations: Operating dates vary by facility. Some smaller private campgrounds have limited seasons, typically mid-April through October. Certain amenities may be unavailable during off-season visits.

    Tips for camping with families

Activity planning: Look for campgrounds with dedicated children's programs. According to a visitor at Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park, "This is not a quiet getaway place but great for kids. There are 1400 sites, most of them are owned sites. Rent a golf cart is a must, this place is huge!!"

Swimming options: Several cabin locations provide swimming areas with varied amenities. "The beach was clean and fun. Not very busy when we were there, which was nice," reports one camper about Lost Bridge.

Site selection: For family gatherings, some parks offer buddy sites. One reviewer at Lost Bridge State Recreation Area recommends, "Site 191 and 196 share grassy areas," making them good choices for families camping together.

Beach access considerations: Not all cabins permit pets at swimming areas. One camper at Camp Timber Lake notes, "Fur babies are allowed in. However, they are not allowed in the water or near the beach."

    Tips from RVers

Full hookup options: KOA Campground Bluffton provides cabin rentals along with RV sites that have full hookups. "Quiet place with super friendly people. There are laundry facilities on site and surprisingly good WiFi and were even in the back!" reports one visitor.

Site layout considerations: When booking cabins at established campgrounds, check the site configuration. "The sites are however father from the lakes and trails," mentions a visitor at Chain O'Lakes about their group site. Another notes, "As usual the group sites are much larger, and also more expensive."

Seasonal flooding: Some cabins may experience accessibility issues during high water periods. "A lot of the campsites were closed due to flooding but we managed to have a site that was untouched," notes a visitor at Lost Bridge. "The view was incredible and eye opening to my daughter who has never seen the effects of flooding."
